Task force recommends 4-year-old kindergarten program for 2011-12
Board members also heard a report on January 11 from Ann Higgins, Director of Administrative Services, on the results of a Pre-K task force study. The task force, which has been studying the feasibility of a community-based four-year-old kindergarten (4K) program since April 2008, included representatives from the school district, local preschool providers, early education experts, and parents. Lead by Higgins and Pre-K Consultant Peter O'Neil, the group studied the research on 4K and conducted visits to other school districts with 4K programs. The task force made the following recommendations to board members. More (p. 2)
Study of student grading practices In other business, the board heard a report from Sue Wilson, Director of Instruction, about the study currently being done on the District's grading and assessment practices. Wilson outlined a five-year timeline for staff collaboration and training on grading practices, how grades are recorded on report cards, and how modifications and accommodations will be implemented and reported for students. |

Have no fear: parents, students can coexist in cyberspace
The following article was reprinted (and adapted) from the National School Public Relations Association.
When social media sites began growing in popularity among students, the initial issues school officials were faced with were largely centered on the students -- their interactions with one another and the unknown users outside the school community.
In the last couple of years, however, older generations of users have gravitated to the sites and presented school officials with yet another concern: parents and students sharing the same cyberspace, perhaps to the detriment of the students. (The prime example is the 2007 MySpace case involving a Missouri mother who took part in a hoax that allegedly led to a teen's suicide. The woman was acquitted and a federal judge recently allowed her back on the Internet.)

District's Instructional Services Team (IST) leads educational process Who provides leadership and direction for many of the plans and programs that support the educational process at DASD? It's the Instructional Services Team (IST).
This team, who works at the Holum Administrative Center, consists of three areas of expertise and responsibility. But they work closely together to oganize and coordinate many facets of the school district's operations, providing behind-the-scenes services to teachers, staff, students, and families throughout the District.
They get their direction from the district's Framework for Our Future conferences, where the community-at-large has provided input in developing the DeForest Area School District's mission of providing an "excellent education," and has also helped identify an "end in mind" for student learning.
The Instructional Services Team uses this information from the community and board of education to develop continuous improvement strategies, as well as ensuring our District is in compliance with state and federal educational requirements.
Meet the Instructional Services Team
IST consists of three directors, two administrative assistants and two secretaries. Click here (p. 3) for an introduction to the Instructional Services Team and a brief overview of their areas of responsibility. |
