DASD teacher mentor programDistrict mentor programs supports new teachers

The DeForest Area School District is committed to building a culture that honors knowledge, respects individuals, demands excellence, fosters life-long learning, and supports relationships that strengthen individuals, families and the community.

Since staff members are one of the foundational elements of educational excellence, the school district is committed to all teachers being highly effective practitioners. A strong mentorship program for new teachers improves the quality of instructional practices under the guidance of trained mentoring professionals.
The DeForest Area School District expanded its mentorship program in 2005 to assist teachers in developing a meaningful understanding of District expectations for quality instruction.

Cindy Rosch, a former teacher at the middle school, took over the reigns as the District's mentor coordinator last year. According to Director of Instruction Sue Wilson, "Cindy Rosch guides new teachers in both the art and science of a very complex profession. She is a role model for veteran teachers as well as those new to education in her passion and drive for continuous improvement and life-long learning."

Program meets needs of two groups
All teachers new to the DeForest Area School District are identified as either an Initial or Professional Educator. The District recognizes that an Initial Educator has different needs than a Professional Educator; therefore, the role of the mentors in assisting these two groups is slightly different.

During the past two years, Rosch has revised and expanded the program to fit the needs of these two groups. With the help of the Dane County New Teacher Project and the New Teacher Center-Wisconsin, unique and exciting learning opportunities are available to support beginning teachers.

High school seniors will be participating in a mock crash simulation on Thursday, May 28 at 9 am. An evening presentation is being offered to adults in the community the same day at 7:00 pm.

The event is taking place thanks to the coordinated efforts of several groups: DeForest Area High School, DeForest Area Fire/EMS Department, DeForest Police Department, DeForest Area Joining Forces for Families, Dane County Sheriffs Department, and the Wisconsin State Patrol. The hope is to prevent such crashes from occurring in our community.

For more information, contact Tim Onsager, DAHS Principal, at 842-6600 or Lieutenant Dan Furseth at 846-6655.
