EVCO Plastics

State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster recently named Dale Evans of EVCO Plastics a Business Friend of Education Award winner for 2009. Less than a dozen individuals and businesses are honored each year for the contributions they make to education, providing quality educational experiences that allow students to explore careers and prepare for the world of work.
The Friends of Education award was presented to Dale at the Wisconsin Association of Career & Technical Education Conference on Thursday, February 26 in Appleton.  Superintendent Jon Bales and School/Community Relations Debbie Brewster accompanied Dale to the awards breakfast.
According to Burmaster, "These Friends of Education are devoted to education, community, and opportunity. They understand that the long-term economic security and quality of life for Wisconsin and our nation depends on how we educate today's elementary and secondary students."
Dale was nominated by the DeForest Area Chamber of Commerce Education Committee for establishing creative business and education partnerships.

Students replace textbooks with netbooks
netbook
This spring New Reflections staff and students will participate in a new project that offers laptops to students and teachers for use during the school year. Much like a textbook, students and staff will be using a netbook (or small laptop). Eventually, students will take home the computers and, like a textbook, return it at the end of the year. This project grew out from many branches, but most notably, New Reflections curriculum and the way that students use and care for technology at the school.

According to Kim Bannigan, the school district's technology integrator, "We aren't blazing a trail, but following a well-worn path. Many districts have had laptop programs in place for years, so there is an abundance of ideas and research about how to make them successful. Ultimately, this project will create and foster a 21st century learning environment."

Thanks to the generosity of local businesses, two to three 5th grade students will again be chosen to earn a $1,000 scholarship when they graduate from high school. Sponsored by the DeForest Area School District and the local business community, the program provides 5th grade students an opportunity for on-going financial incentives for academic success.

Students are selected based on the following criteria: financial need, demonstrated potential, academic achievement, personal involvement, school attendance, and district residency. Parents interested in this opportunity for their child may call 842-6581 for more information.

Information about the 5/12 scholarship program is available on the web at: http://www.deforest.k12.wi.us - For Community, then 5/12 Scholarship.

Nominations taken until April 15

The DeForest Area School District is currently taking nominations for the 6th annual Walk of Honor, which recognizes individuals within our greater school community who have demonstrated ongoing commitment and significant contributions to their school district. Honorees may be alumni or former staff members of the DeForest Area School District, or area community members, who best personify the school district's vision and have aided in achieving its ends.

A community-based committee reviews nominations to select outstanding candidates for the Norski Walk of Honor. The honorees will be selected this summer and recognized by the school district and community in the fall.

More information about the Norski Walk of Honor is available at: http://www.deforest.k12.wi.us - For Community - Walk of Honor.
