LAITY DAY IS MAY 25TH!
Promote the School of the Laity in your church.

New SOL LogoEach year in May, the Savannah Presbytery celebrates Laity Day, a day to promote lay education through our groundbreaking J. Richard Bass School of the Laity.  This year's Laity Day will be celebrated on May 25.

Started by former Executive Presbyter Dick Bass in 1988, this two year program, which includes a spring, summer, and fall session each year, allows lay persons to engage in serious study of scripture, theology, and ministry.  Graduates have come from all walks of life and all education levels. Held at beautiful Epworth by the Sea on St. Simons Island, the School of the Laity is truly an educational experience. Classes are taught by pastors and educators from throughout the PC(USA), and usually require homework and additional study in between.  The cost is affordable, and there are scholarships available.

On May 25, we are asking each church to do a "Minute for Mission" for the School of the Laity.  If you have a graduate in your congregation (with almost 300 graduates to date, you probably do!), ask him or her to participate and talk about their experience as a student.

For more information, visit the SOL Page on our website, or contact Lynn Garis at the Presbytery Office.

Did You Know?
Interesting facts and information for churches.

The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Seal

2008 Christmas Joy OfferingThe seal (or symbol) of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) is often used by its churches and governing bodies in many different ways.  But there are some strict rules guiding the seal's use that many may not know about.

Approved by the 197th General Assembly (1985), the PC(USA) seal is a registered trademark on the principal register with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and is registered with the U.S. Copyright Office.  The seal is comprised of the symbol, the basic components of which are the cross, Scripture, a descending dove at the upper part of the cross and flames on either side of the lower part of the cross, and the name of the denomination, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), encircles the symbol.

The basic rules for the use of the seal are as follows:
  • Each congregation and governing body may use the seal without receiving prior permission. The seal may be used for core functions, for example, printing on church stationery and publications, church signs, or shirts for church athletic teams.
  • The design and proportions of the symbol must not be altered in any way, except the size may be changed for use on stationery, signs, banners and so forth.
  • The symbol may be used with or without the words "Presbyterian Church (USA)" encircling it.
  • The seal must adhere to the standardized color palette which has been established as part of the visible identity program for the church.  There are three primary color formulas, and seven secondary color formulas.  Standardizing the color palette enhances the impact of the primary identification elements.
  • The symbol must never be depicted with any type of motion. For example, the symbol must not be depicted in a video or on an Internet Web page as spinning.
  • While every use of the seal may not provide an opportunity to display the statutory notice and use of the statutory notice is not mandatory, it is good practice, when practicable, to give public notice of the trademark registration by using one of the following: The letter R enclosed in a circle: ®; Reg. U.S. Pat. & Tm. Off.; or Registered in U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
  • Anyone other than a congregation or governing body who plans to use the seal must receive the prior permission of the Office of the General Assembly.  Any suspected unauthorized use should be promptly brought to the attention of the Office of Legal/Risk Management Services or the Office of the General Assembly by forwarding the name and address of the user as well as a sample of their use of the seal.
This information was obtained from the PC(USA) website.  To see more information on these rules, as well as the standardized color palette and usage guidelines, visit www.pcusa.org/graphics/permission.

"Did You Know" will now be in each e-newsletter, and will provide helpful information and facts regarding everyday church issues.  If your church is looking for information on a specific issue, or has something that might be of use in this column, contact Tavia Harrison.

NEW HISPANIC CONGREGATION IN THE WORKS
Swainsboro PC is key in creating and hosting this new ministry.

The members of Swainsboro PC are working with General Presbyter Ken McKenzie to spearhead a Hispanic Ministry in their area.

Facing a shrinking congregation, and at a crossroads in their church life, the session of SPC decided to look outside themselves at how their church could serve God in their community.  What they found was quite a large Hispanic population that doesn't attend church, but has a need not only of a place to worship, but a place they can go for fellowship, assistance, and an over-all sense of belonging.

Ken has called in Hispanic Presbyterian pastor, Rev. Ozeas Fernandez, and local pastors from other denominations for assistance.  Plans are in the works to find out how to best serve this new congregation, including a possible after-school program , food and clothing bank, and more.  They have already begun planning a kids summer day camp.

The new congregation will have a "kick-off" weekend May 8-9.  Saturday will be a celebration with games, food, information, and more.  Sunday, Mother's Day, they will hold their first worship.  All in the presbytery are invited, and prayers and support are asked for as this ministry gets off the ground.

For more information, contact Ken McKenzie at the Presbytery Office.  You can also look for updates in the coming months in your presbytery newsletter and e-newsletter.

NEWS FROM AROUND SAVANNAH PRESBYTERY

Wanted: Summer Camp Volunteers.  The Christian Education committee is currently looking for adults to serve as volunteer counselors at this year's Summer Camp, the week of June 21st.   Adult counselors have a primary role in the campers' experience, staying with them in the cabins, and attending all activities with them.  If you are interested in serving, or want to know more about it, please contact Lou Ellen Hartley at the Presbytery Office.

Helping Flood Victims.  Blackshear PC is currently gathering volunteers from the congregation to participate in a six week ecumenical work project in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  Much of eastern Iowa was devastated by flooding almost two years ago, and there are families that still haven't been able to return home.  There are six week-long opportunities available from April 11 to May 22.  If you or your church is interested in participating, you can call PDA at 866-732-6121 or visit their website.

Hidden Treasures of Bayard Square.  First PC in Darien is holding an upscale indoor bazaar May 20-21 at 304 Third Street in Darien.  They will have everything from anti ques to art to jewelry and plants.  The bazaar will help them raise funds for a new Fellowship Hall.  All are invited to come and shop.  They are also looking for donated items to sell, and all donations are tax deductible.  For more information, or to schedule a pick-up or delivery, call Judy Dodd at 912-437-7001.

Church Musician Needed.  Christ PC in Pooler is seeking the services of a quality church musician.  The ideal candidate will be the primary keyboardist, direct the choir and vocal ensembles, have a traditional foundation, entrepreneurial spirit, and a contemporary vision.  Interested candidates, or those who know one, should contact Rev. Ed Ayers at 912-925-6441 or by email.

New Directory Needs Your Help!  A few weeks ago churches received a request to update information for the 2010-2011 Savannah Presbytery Directory (the Who's Who). Many churches have already responded, and we are so thankful!  If your church has not, please do so by April 15th.  For help or information, contact Tavia Harrison at the Presbytery Office.

Prayer Concerns.
Please keep the following people and churches in your prayers:
-- The Savannah Presbytery, its teams, leaders, and staff , as they learn and work into the new structure.

-- The health and healing of Nettie Drew (Executive Director of Swainsboro Apts.), Nancy Cramer (wife of Altama PC pastor Bert Cramer), Ginger Chambless (wife of Henry Memorial PC pastor Proctor Chambless), and Rev. Don Fehr (retired Minister Member)
