| Washington, DC, October 5, 2009: International Director of Social Action Dr. Joseph F. West announces Sigma Wellness Africa 2011, a 2-week International Social Action service project of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity.
The trip will include a service project, excursion up Mount Kilimanjaro and an African safari.
Working with U.S. State Department, Embassy of Tanzania, Harvard University and an international aid group Sigma Wellness Africa 2011 seeks to help United Republic of Tanzania further fight HIV/AIDS, poverty and illiteracy. Brothers will have the opportunity to share their expertise with local leaders as well as learn about the country's rich history and have a tremendous adventure.
Sigma Wellness Africa 2011 is seeking highly motivated and dedicated Brothers of Sigma to commit 10-14 days between mid-March and mid-April 2011 (specific dates to be named) to strengthen community health, literacy and businesses in a select region of Tanzania. The program is specifically looking for 30-plus Brothers from all professions to serve on highly organized teams deployed throughout the region. Collegiate Brothers are also welcome.
This is a call for Brothers to serve on the Sigma Wellness Africa 2011-Tanzania Planning and Vetting Committee. This Committee will begin holding planning meetings 1st week of November 2009 and is expected to meet in person, via web and conference call 1-2 times each month until trip departure. The Committee will be responsible for team assignments, travel itinerary, security planning, fundraising and partnership planning.
Committee members are also expected to commit a minimum of $1,914.00 in fundraising toward the effort (due in full December 2010). This is in addition to travel expenses. There is a lower fundraising threshold for collegiate Brothers and non-Committee members.
