Summer Reading Registration Starts June 4th

The Summer Reading Club is a program designed to encourage children of Rockaway Township cardholders to read independently during summer vacation. This 8 week program (June 18 to August 11) will encourage children to read as many books as they can, and to become lifelong library users.

We have a program for children that are not reading on their own yet. Parents/caregivers will register their child and receive a reading log to keep track of what and how long they read along with the child. Each week, they can bring in the Firefly reading log to the library and receive prizes for their children.

Children going into grades 1 - 6 register for the program by signing up with their name, school and grade. They receive a bookmark, a book bag, a log for recording the number of minutes they've read and a suggested reading list.

Beginning June 18, the children bring in their log and a summer teen volunteer will check off the minutes and books read. Children may come in anytime the library is open to check-in with their log. Children may also read books on specific subjects to complete the "Reach for the Stars: READ!" form.

Live Shows for Owl Club Readers

Any child who has read at least 20 minutes may sign up for the following shows. Attendance is limited to children in grades 1-6 in the 2012 Summer Reading Club.

Monday, July 9 at 7:00 pm - Turtle Back Zoo

Vince Sharp from the Turtle Back Zoo will come to the library to introduce us to some small mammals, birds and reptiles that will inspire us to understand, appreciate, and protect the fragile interdependence of all living things. Come and learn about local wildlife and some seldom seen backyard neighbors!

Monday, July 16 at 7:00 pm - Wondergy

Come check out our CoolScience program, a hands-on exploration of how matter changes at extreme temperatures. In order to explore how we stay cool during summer, you will see things explode, contract, and suddenly disappear in a puff of fog. While this may look like magic, there are no tricks at all! A great way to 'freeze' the science in your mind is to help us bring together fresh cream, milk, flavorings of your choice, and of course, liquid nitrogen to make the freshest homemade ice cream.

Monday, July 23 at 7:00 pm - Astronomy

New Jersey Astronomical Association President Steve Gale will talk about the moon, where it came from and what it might have looked like billions of years ago. Weather permitting, the talk will be followed by viewing the moon close up through one or more telescopes. Rain date 7/25/2012.

Monday, July 30 at 7:00 pm - Dreams, Books & Magic

Join Steve, Henry the Magic Rabbit, and Professor Hoot the Owl as they bring magical stories to life at your library this summer!!

Monday, August 6 at 7:00 pm - Talent Show

Rockaway Township's very own S.T.A.R.S. perform their unique talents.

History of the Jersey Shore! - Tuesday, June 12

Come on a colorful tour of our coastal history with Kevin Woyce, author of Jersey Shore: History and Facts. Hear tales from the long-ago days of pirates, shipwrecks, and lighthouses to the founding of today's most popular summer resorts.

This presentation will be held at Rockaway Township Library on Tuesday, June 12 from 7:00 to 8:30 pm.  Registration is required:  please call 973-627-2344, email [email protected] or visit the library in person to sign up!

The New Generations Service Award was presented to the Club at the Annual District Conference in Morristown on April 19.
