  • Greetings!

Spring is here! This year, Mr. and Mrs. Dovely, a pair of mourning doves, returned to nest in the hanging flower planter by my front door. It's a high traffic area, but we seem to have developed a relationship of trust. I chirp to them every time I pass by.

Last year the doves raised six chicks; two at a time. It takes about four weeks for the chicks to hatch and learn to fly. They grow fast! The Dovelys take turns sitting on the nest, and it's fun to watch them sitting up higher and higher as the babies grow beneath them.

This January, during a long stretch of unseasonably warm weather, Mrs. Dovely laid her first clutch of eggs. When it was time for her babies to fly, one chick lagged behind. It was still in the nest days after it's sibling had flown the coop.

When I heard the screech of a bluejay one morning, I knew just what had happened. I ran to the door, and chased that bluejay bully away with a broom! But that last little chick was on the ground and it had been pecked. A few downy feathers were still floating in the air.

It immediately started raining hard. Junior hobbled into my garden and disappeared. I was afraid this one was lost, for sure. Mrs. Dovely flew down to perch on a garden branch just above where I had last seen her chick. Was the baby hiding under a plant? I couldn't see him anywhere.

For two days Mrs. Dovely perched on that branch with her feathers puffed up against the cold. She didn't appear to even move. I watched helplessly. From time to time I tried to chirp encouragement as the winds blew, the rain poured and hail hammered the ground.

On the third day, the sun came out and the baby fledgling reappeared. And in a flew hours, he flew away. I was filled with joy! Yippie! The baby made it after all!

The next day I saw Junior back in the nest, sitting beside Mom for a few hours. And then he flew away for good.

I was amazed by this drama of life and survival. Mothers are fierce and strong and brave, even if they only weigh 4 ounces! I was reminded of my own Mom... and how there is nothing on earth like a Mother's love.

    *A message from Princess Cecile
    larger website Cecile Portrait

Hi! My name is Princess Cecile.
You may already have read my first book, Cecile and the Spider Queen. If so, then you know how a little spider named, Esta, caused me so much trouble. If not, I can tell you this, without giving away the plot: when I needed help, Esta was deceitful and unkind.

I thought I had put the whole thing behind me, until yesterday, when I decided to go for a walk in the Enchanted Forest.

I was sitting beneath a tree enjoying the beautiful sunlight falling in long, golden shafts through the forest canopy. Suddenly, I became aware of a spider's web, barely visible, just inches from my head. It reminded me of Esta, and the more I thought of her, the angrier I got. In spite of the beautiful day, I was making myself very unhappy with my thoughts.

"WHO? WHO?" The sound rang through the forest calm. I looked up and saw an owl swoop and settle onto a branch overhead. He cocked his head and with one stern, golden eye, he studied me intently. I was speechless! I was awed by his impressive size and his magnificent glossy feathers.

           "WHO.O.O.O?" he asked again.
"I'm Princess Cecile," I managed to stammer.
"WHO?" he asked. "WHO? WHO? His luminous eye felt like a searchlight

"I'm the Princess of Belamor!" I said. But the longer I thought about who I was, the more it made me think. I thought about how much I loved the people of Belamor - and how much they loved me! I also remembered that on my adventures, even in my darkest hour, help had always come to me.

Suddenly, I knew just WHO I was. My anger disappeared and happiness took its place. I was loving, kind and strong - and I was able to forgive Esta!

The Great Who was pleased. I could see it in his eyes before he flew away on silent wings. Later, I found Esta and thanked her. After all, even though we didn't know it at the time, she was playing her part, and helping me discover who I really was.

    Cecile and The Spider Queen

"I loved the charming details in both the story and the illustrations. The chapter heading designs are particularly entrancing. Young girls will identify with Cecile's feelings and little Lily's spunk. The funny spider illustrations are even appealing for spider-phobes, as well as the notion of fashion-minded spiders sharing web patterns and lace designs. I also liked the fact that the heroine saved her well-intentioned prince charming. A good read, and I'm looking forward to sequels." - Heidi Petach February 26, 2009
