Greetings!
Celebrating the holidays with our residents is a time we cherish. They remind us to stop and enjoy the colors, lights, fun, singing and the sweets! They teach us about love and generosity, kindness and gratitude. And we always love to have a reason for more parties.
I want to thank you for being a friend of Hillside House, for your caring and support this past year. We are truly a community and we depend on our community to keep doing what we do 24 hours a day, 365 days a year: making sure our residents have all the love and care, help, instruction, guidance and support they need and deserve to live healthy, enjoyable, rewarding lives. It's an honor and a gift to do the work we do. Thank you for helping us continue in all the ways that you do.
Wishing you all the best this holiday season and in the new year,
Pam Flynt Tambo Executive Director

Holiday Festivities
On Saturday, December 4 residents and staff along with quite a few family members and friends celebrated our annual Holiday Open House with joyful holiday music, hors d'oeuvres and warm beverages, and a delectable bake sale provided by the wonderful women of the Assistance League, which raised $371 for Hillside House. Many thanks to the Assistance League for helping make this a lovely afternoon.
Our friends from the Assistance League also came on Monday, December 13 to sing Christmas Carols for and with the residents, an evening of sweet song, laughter and fun.
Tom D. and Brian took a tour of the Santa Barbara Christmas lights with Get Out! Travel on December 18. Gifts from family members and donations to the Nancy Read Life Enrichment Fund make these and other trips and enrichment activities possible, so that our residents can all have access to wonderful, memorable experiences in the world beyond our campus.
Other trips with Get Out! this month include David going to Disneyland; Pilar, Cindy, Reuben and Jenny visiting the Gentle Barn; and Marybeth seeing Disney on Ice.
On Christmas day, we will have an extravaganza of gift opening, fun and games and a festive dinner. And then next thing you know, we'll be ringing in the new year!

Ricardo Helps Us Bring Better Care and More Opportunities
In November Ricardo Martinez became Director of Staff Development and CNA Department Supervisor, relieving overburdened staff who have been dividing up these duties in addition to their other responsibilities since we had to cut a staff position during the budget crisis of 2003.
Ricardo has been with us as a part-time LVN since 2001, so he knows our residents and our needs well. We are delighted to have him take on this new position. He is doing a fantastic job, upgrading our training programs and materials, creating comprehensive up-to-date monthly training for all staff, and implementing more direct, hands-on supervision of the Certified Nursing Assistants.
Client Services Director, Gail Metzger, who had previously taken on the responsibility of hiring, supervising and scheduling the CNAs is now able to focus more time and attention on improvements and additions to the many therapeutic programs and recreational opportunities we offer our residents. Our initial focus is on increasing needed life skills programs, implementing more community involvement, devoting additional time to training the physical therapists, and more closely monitoring the day programs that residents attend, among other benefits. Thanks to help from the Weingart Foundation (see below), we are very glad that we can improve the care and programs for our residents by re-instating this important staff position.

Seeking New Members to Join Our Community
Hillside House has openings for two new residents available! If you know of anyone who might benefit from living at Hillside House, please ask them to contact Gail Metzger, Director of Client Services (805) 687-0788 ext 17. We would love to talk to them.
For many of our residents and their families, finding Hillside House is the end of a long search for them to find a stimulating, loving home that meets their needs and helps them live full lives. Our caring community and round-the-clock nursing care, combined with our full range of therapeutic programs and recreational and educational activities, make Hillside House an ideal home for many people with developmental disabilities, and we are particularly able to help those with medical challenges as well.

The Weingart Foundation Gives Hillside House A Big Boost The Weingart Foundation has announced that they are giving Hillside House a grant of $75,000 for 2010 plus a $75,000 matching grant next year to support us in our core operations and help us with the significant shortfall in donations we were experiencing this year. Individual donations have been falling in the past two years--over a third of non-profits report decreased giving this past year--and foundation funding has also become much more competitive, as many foundations have experienced losses in their endowments. Yet Hillside House's costs continue to grow, as the cost of living increases. Without the Weingart Foundation's generous grant coming in the nick of time, we are $80,000 short of our fundraising goal for 2010. Thanks to the $75,000 from the foundation we will almost make our goal, and we hope year-end donations will help us meet it. When we fail to meet our goals, we have to make painful budget cuts in the following year.
We approached the Weingart Foundation this year with a request for core support that would help us with the costs of adding the staff position which Ricardo Martinez has filled and also to meet our Annual Fund needs. The grant will help to cover the costs of re-instating this needed staff position for the first two years. After that we must continue to raise the funds on our own. To encourage us in creating a solid base of support for Hillside House for the future, the foundation has stipulated that the funds they will give to us at the end of next year must be matched during the year by donations that we raise. We are enormously grateful to the Weingart Foundation for helping us in these challenging times.
