THE BURIAL OF A CIVIL WAR SOLDIER

Thanks goes to Steve Betchart for providing this photo.

Although I was not able to attend the burial of Peter Knapp, I have seen on our Facebook page many many great pictures and articles about this fabulous event. I have included links to both news articles and videos that have appeared on the NWCW Facebook channel.

Thanks goes to Steve Betchart for providing this photo.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RQjLKpZASE

THE BATTLE FOR CHEADLE LAKE IS NIGH

MAY 19 & 20, School day on the 18th.

The regular event is Saturday and Sunday, two battles per day at 11 and 3pm. Event will end, (and cars allowed back into camps) at 4pm on Sunday. No cars will be allowed in the camps from Saturday morning at 8am on, with the only exception being emergency vehicles. We will have a school day on Friday, May 18th from 9am to 2pm which will end with a skirmish. Two years ago we had over 1,000 kids come to the school day and are expecting at least that this year!

You can move in as soon as Thursday morning, (especially if you are helping on the School Day) BUT YOU MUST HAVE PERMISSION FROM YOUR BATTALION COMMANDER CONCERNING SET-UP LOCATION! Battalion space will be assigned to BC's and it is up to you to arrange your campsite within your area. I will not give permission to camp anywhere; it is up to your battalion commander or his designated representative. Anyone coming in to help on the school day can come in Thursday or early Friday morning to get set and ready for the kids. We will end by 2pm so you can then set up your camp Friday afternoon or evening. Anyone who is available to come by Friday at 1pm and can participate in the skirmish for the kids, please do so. Again, you could get there at noon Friday, park your vehicle, suit up, skirmish and then have the afternoon to set your camp. Also, if you want to stay over Sunday night you can bring your vehicle into camp and stay.

For those of you either doing a demonstration station or helping on the school day I NEED TO KNOW THAT so I can come up with some sort of rotation. I am happy to have more stations than less, but would prefer you didn't simply come, set up and expect to be part of it. I can also better pre-promote the stations if I know who and what they are. If I have not talked to you personally about doing a station please e-mail me and tell me what you want to do. My e-mail is scott@ingallsagency.com. If you aren't doing a station but can help, I could use some greeters to hand out coupons and tell the kids the rules about our stuff. This will only take about the first hour of the day at 9am.

The usual amenities will be available at this event. We will attempt to have a dance Saturday evening, (I am trying to get a hold of the band). Concessions and sutlers on site all weekend. Plenty of reenactor parking across Weirich road next to the fire hall which will be clearly signed. No one should park in the public parking area as I will have violators towed this year. We will have security in our parking area Friday and Saturday nights from 10pm to 6am. The field for reenactor parking is plenty big, but please don't block the obvious driveways in that field and keep everyone else from coming and going. How hard is that?

Battalion and Unit commanders are obligated to check everyone for an event card every day. It is a personal pet peeve of mine that we have people reenact without joining or paying to play. Also, all four battalions are required to have 2 people on 'fire watch' 24 hours a day. This is less critical during the day, but from about 10pm to 6am, we all have to have people on watch. If you are on fire watch near the sutlers, please walk through that area all night to help watch their stuff.

I need a limited amount of help as follows. I need 3 units to volunteer to empty our garbage cans into the big dumpster each afternoon, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There are only 7 or 8 trash cans so it won't take long but needs to be done. Also, I need everyone to help police the grounds as the weekend progresses, especially after the school kid's leave. I have also arranged for porta-potty service on Friday afternoon to clean up after the little curtain climbers as well. If you see trash or wrappers, please pick it up and either burn it or toss it in the garbage for us. Speaking of garbage, we will have the big blue dumpster next to the pump house, all garbage goes in it at the end of the event. Please DO NOT bury any garbage including food. We need to get out of the habit of burying food and wrappers, even partially burnt wood at ANY event, it brings out the critters that dig up our fire pits, and then we get fined for it.

Unit placement will be the same as two years ago. Civilians are moving about 150' to the north so the Union can do so as well and get out of the swamp. Confederates are moving to the east closer to the baseball diamond to make room for the civilians on that end of the park. Artillery, Cav and Confederate HQ remain where you have been. If you are new to the event, please check with your unit commander or on-site event people. Also, there is now a large volleyball court west of where artillery and cav will be camped. DO NOT RIDE HORSES ON THE VOLLEYBALL COURTS PLEASE.

To get to Cheadle Lake park, drive through Lebanon on highway 20. 1 mile past WalMart turn left on Weirich Drive and go about a quarter mile. The park is on the left across from the fire hall. Reenactor parking is on the right by the fire hall and will be signed.

If you didn't make Lebanon before please give it a try. We surely deserve one event at this site with good weather, don't we? The camps are close, the battlefield is unique, and the public love us.

Regards,
Scott Ingalls, Event Coordinator

Lebanon school day details:
School day is May 18th at Cheadle Lake Park just east of Lebanon on Weirich Drive off of highway 20.  Watch for the signs.

Schedule –
Stations will be from 9am to 1:30pm in 25 minute intervals. We will fire the cannon to signal everyone to move to a new station.  After a short break for organization we will have a skirmish at approximately 1:30pm. All school events will be complete at about 2pm.  Lunch break is from 12noon to 12:30pm.

Stations – Presentation stations will be all around the battlefield and on the perimeter of the camps.  Each station will be clearly numbered so you can keep track.  We hope have a menu of presentations that match the station numbers when you arrive.

Artillery
 Medical
 Infantry
 Cavalry
 Civilian Life
 Period Dance
 Period Fashion
 Music
Military music

I will be on site at all times.  If you have questions I can answer before the event or are willing to do a station please let me know at scott@ingallsagency.com

If you are not doing a station but are willing to help, we need people to greet the busses and kids, hand them coupons that gets them in free the next two days and explain some simple rules about our stuff.  That first half hour is pretty hectic so any help would be appreciated.

DIARY OF A CONFEDERATE SOLDIER

April 3rd, 1862

The Colonel seems to be in a good mood this day. He had three cows brought down for the slaughter. It was some good eats. I think Spring and his new lady friend seems have improved his mood.

I think that once this war is done, I may have to travel some. I have never seen such beautiful country as I have seen as we march to Virginia. The South is a wonder to see. The rolling hills are more pronounced here then in my dear old Louisiana. I do miss the ocean though. Oh yes, and my feet hurt like a sonofa. I may be close to wearing out my first pair of shoes. The road seems to love jabbing at my feet and turning my ankles. I crossed one wagon rut and I took down Thomas and Pete as I turned out and fell. Talk about embarassing and pretty dangerous. I think we could have had more then one of the guys tromp all over us guys layin the ground.

At least the roads are dry.

DO YOU BELONG?

It’s spring and the season is just around the corner.  Along with airing out the canvas, repacking the kitchen boxes and planning meals I have been busy with registrations.  Since we are only a month away from our first event I thought I would remind all that now is a good time to renew for this year’s membership.  NCWC annual membership that ends on December 31st  each year.  To help the units have a good idea of what their numbers will be for this year and reduce the time you stand in line at the membership booth please take a few minutes to pull off the application from the NCWC website or request a copy, fill it out and send it to your unit commander or the unit membership person with payment.  The NCWC website has a list of each unit’s contact person.  This person will be able to give you the name and contact information for the authorizing signer for your unit.  All applications must have the authorizing signature from the leadership of the unit before sent to me.  The membership dues are the same this year – $15 for a single membership and $30 for a family membership.

I supply the unit commanders with current membership rosters just before each event.  Lebanon is May 18-20.  I need to have applications to me by Friday, May 12th to be able to complete the filing process of deposits, roster updates, cards and sign-in page preparation.  We will be charging pay to play for anyone who is not a current member at the time of the event.  Pay to play fee is $10 per person per event.  Anyone coming to an event as pay to play must have their pay to play application signed by the authorizing agent of the unit which you will be falling in before coming to the membership booth for registration.

Please take a few minutes now to get your applications in so to avoid pay to play fees as well as less time spent in line at the membership booth.  Less people with paperwork at the booth means less time you and others wait to get through the sign-in process.  Thanks everyone!  I’m looking forward to seeing everyone again.

Anne Tamerius, Membership Coordinator
