DIARY OF A CONFEDERATE SOLDIER

February 25th, 1862

Received a letter from home. Mother is down with the cough and Father is worried about her greatly. The cough is running rampant in the camp too. The morning is loud with the hacking of men in their winter homes. It is always damp and I know I am forever cold. We had a small fire in our chimney and had to steal a new barrel to replace it. Lucky ol' Tom was outside checking out the weather. More than one of the men's “cabins” have burned down cause of a fire in their chimney.

Opened the last jar of peaches from my sister. There was slimy green and blue crap on the top, but they tasted good. The boys in my “cabin” enjoyed them. We had a good crowd wanting a taste. We know that will be the last of our sweets until some fruit start coming out. We are always hungry.

Well it is time to go out and drill again. That First Sergeant of ours is one tough nut. I sure need a new pair of brogans. The hole in mine is getting a bit bigger and my socks are always wet. Maybe that is why I am always cold. March, march, march.

FROM THE CHAIR

Welcome to the new year and a new season of living history together! I wanted to thank those of you who supported Earl Bishop and myself as your new President and Vice President in the elections. We will do our best to ‘make every step an advance’ in your behalf. As you contemplate this new season a great way to start is at winter quarters March 9th through the 11th. Craig Flynn and several volunteers have put together another good weekend of learning more about the Civil War, this hobby and each other. If you haven’t signed up please do so as we have minimums we need to reach for meals and rooms. It’s not expensive and you always have the option of day tripping for a day or two. Winter quarters is a very relaxing weekend with our friends from this hobby. You can go to some of the sessions, eat some good food, but mostly hang out with people who share common interests and stories. The schedule, costs and registration information is on our web site at www.nwcwc.org/reenactorinfo.html#winter.

The headline on this short letter is ‘Living’ History. That’s what we do, or try to. I hope to encourage you through our Board and commanders to do it better than ever this year. Let’s work on our personas, our camp presentation and what the public sees when they come to visit. With the hoopla about the 150th we can expect larger attendance at our events so let’s provide reenactments we can be proud to share. If you want a more realistic scenario for a weekend, consider the tactical that Jim Munson is putting together. I hear there are plenty of ‘hard core’ reenactors that want this kind of event, so let’s see it. Along with our regular 4 public events that have been scheduled, the Board is encouraging you to consider the Chehalis event in Washington in July. We love having them come down here for Stevens so let’s go up there and meet some new friends. Most of all, let’s ‘live’ history and have fun doing it.

Regards,
Scott Ingalls
Chairman, NWCWC

TO ALL MEMBERS OF THE NORTHWEST CIVIL WAR COUNCIL
ANNUAL FIELD MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION

Ladies and gentlemen of the NWCWC. It is that time of year again when we need to plan for our annual field music scholarship applications. ANY FUNCTIONING FIELD MUSICIAN WHO IS A MEMBER IN GOOD STANDING OF THE NWCWC MAY APPLY.

Applicants must be willing and able to expend their own resources (if necessary) to augment funds provided by the scholarship. The scholarship is for $500. Last year the winner went to the National Field Music School but that is only one option. If applicants can find a good program that is closer then that is acceptable.

Applicants must do the following:

1. list instruments they play & level of skill ...name & contact information.

2. list the program they want to attend and how they intend to use the information and skills learned.

3. submit their application to either Michael Larson or Steve Betschart by Saturday, March 31st

The NWCWC will pay for registration to the program and, upon presentation of receipts, will issue reimbursement not to exceed $500.00. Winners also need to submit a written or verbal report to the NWCWC Board giving a description of what they learned and evaluation of their experience. If members would like information for the National Civil War Field Music School (June 8-10 in Lambertville, New Jersey) they should email the following website.

The tuition is $125 if registered by April 15, 2012 and $140.00 after that date.

Sgt. Steve Betschart
