Connect Animal Magnetism to your Classroom Workshop
Dec. 10th, 2010
John Michael Kohler Arts Center
8:00am-3:30pm

Explore the dynamic and complex relationship between people and animals in this enthralling series of exhibitions at the Arts Center.  Why do we revere certain animals and vilify others?  How are humans and animals similar and how are we different?  How have we portrayed animals in stories and myths? Learn about the art, from Native American masks to a full-room installation of life-size white elephants. Discover the many ways it can link to literacy, science, environmental studies, social studies and language arts. Be inspired and create a hands-on art project you can use in your classroom.  Experience the power of a Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) discussion to engage students in looking at and thinking about art.

FREE for Teachers, After School Providers and Artists!

A@L Schools strongly encouraged to send up to two representatives to this amazing PD event!

Come join us for an introductory workshop on: "Starting a Spoken Word Poetry Club at your School", which will show you how to bring poetry to life in your classroom. This 3-part series will give teachers, specialists and after-school providers ideas how to build a 6th-8th grade Spoken Word Poetry Club at your school, with the option to compete in city-wide spoken word poetry slams. Learn about the power of poetry to inspire and bring the best out of your students, helping not only their writing and literacy skills, but building their confidence and creativity as well! A@L's Ryan Hurley, also a spoken word poet, will discuss the early steps in this exciting process. In addition, the workshop series will culminate with a trip to Chicago's Louder Than a Bomb Youth Poetry Festival, one of the nation's largest youth poetry festival!
