Howdy!
As you are reading this, it is June 2, 2012. Or later. We are almost halfway through the New Year; how are those resolutions coming along? Did you resolve to pay off your debt? Don't worry, it's never too late to start. Don't be afraid of that credit card debt, just face it. Credit cards aren't bad things, if you treat them right as today's soapbox shows.
We all have to struggle at times. If you can do it with a smile on your face, you will make it a little bit easier. Today's Money 101 deals with the lighter side of estate planning. If author Jen Lancaster can find humor while writing her will, you can grit your teeth and pay down that credit card debt.

Plastic Money and Traveling
Welcome to summer! Around this time of year, many folks start thinking about getting out of town. Laughter may be an instant vacation (as Milton Berle said), but it doesn't create an instant beach. So while you are making the final arrangements for that trip you've been saving for (your vacation does fit into your budget, right?), here are some tips for using your credit cards.
Yep, I said credit cards. While I wouldn't recommend going into debt for that trip of a lifetime, using a credit card can be a fantastic tool, if used correctly.
First of all, get to know your credit card companies. Set aside some time to call them. Ask questions: What happens if you lose your card, or if it gets stolen? Are you covered for fraudulent charges? How long would it take to get a replacement? If you are going out of the country, ask what kind of foreign transaction fees will be added. Finally, let them know when you are going to be traveling, and where. If you don't, there's a possibility your unusual purchases will look so out of character that your card will be declined.
Using credit cards is safer than carrying around a huge amount of cash, but you have to be careful. Plan ahead. Keep your "extra" card (and cash, for that matter) separate from your wallet or purse; in your room's safe or in your money belt are a few options. These alternate money stash sites are also good places to put the photocopies of your cards. Copy the front and back sides of the cards, that way you are more likely to have the customer service number handy should you need to call because of an emergency.
Also, keep all of your receipts so you can compare them to your statements when your great vacation is just a memory.
Happy Travels!

The Funny Side of Estate Planning
Last month, Gary spoke at a wills workshop to a group of people concerned about determining what would be done with their money, property, and more when they died. Usually not a very lighthearted conversation.
This is where 40-something author Jen Lancaster comes in. She recently decided it's time to acting like a grown-up, and that meant getting her affairs in order. Although filled with Lancaster's usual wit and bite, this excerpt from her upcoming book offers a few lessons for us all. Read more...

In Closing
For those of you who are enjoying young ones around these days, a quote from Henny Youngman:
"What is a home without children? Quiet."
Have a great week!
