Money 101 FEBRUARY 4, 2012 |
Howdy!
This time, we are touching on a few topics that could concern you, like whether or not cell phone companies are about to release your phone number to telemarketers, and how you should go about choosing someone to help you out with your taxes (hint: don't wait until the last minute).
Have a great weekend! Gary Silverman, CFP® |

Telemarketers and Cell Phones
Recently, you may have been forwarded an e-mail warning you that on January 31, 2012, telemarketers would be given access to your cell phone number and if you didn't act promptly, you would be plagued with dozens of calls, as the floodgates opened. Of course, if your cell plan makes you pay for incoming calls, this could add up.
You may not have received this warning recently. You may have received it in 2010. Or 2008. Or 2007. Or all the way back to 2004, the earliest date that my research department (you know, my marketing assistant, Tina), could find record of it. Like many forwarded messages that wind up in your inbox, this isn't something you need to worry that much over. Years ago, some of the cell phone providers considered creating a cell phone directory, but it wasn't even going to be released to the public (cell numbers would have been part of the providers' 411 services) , much less to telemarketers. Either way, the directory never happened, but that didn't stop the e-mail rumor mill.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) doesn't allow telemarketers to add mobile numbers to auto-dialers, which is the way they make their unsolicited calls. The National Do Not Call Registry was established to give consumers a choice when it comes to many of these calls. If you are worried about getting calls from telemarketers on ANY of your phones, including your cell phones, add your numbers to the this Do Not Call List. You can register online or by dialing 1-888-382-1222 from the phone you want to register. Remember, signing up for this list does not stop calls from charities, political organizations, telephone surveyors or companies you have done business with in the past.
See the FTC site for more information.

Gary's recently shared important information about your IRA and 401(k) accounts. Many people think that it is enough to leave your IRA to someone in your will, but you need to do more than that, or it can cost you.
Next, there are some new rules in the works that will allow you to clearly see the costs associated with your 401(k) plan.

Something to think about in this election season
A lot of folks churn numbers to come up with statistics that are mostly meaningless. One of these is to predict how the stock market will do based on it being an election year and what party is in office at the time. In case you were wondering, the last time the S&P 500 was down during an election year when an incumbent Democrat was president was way back in 1940. That's 72 years ago. The market was up when Truman ran, when Johnson ran, when Carter ran, and when Clinton ran for a second term.
Sincerely,
