Howdy!
We are still in the first month of the New Year, so many of you are still motivated to fulfill your resolutions. If you are focusing on reducing your debt, take a look at one of our financial calculators (the link is on the left sidebar of these emails, too), specifically, the Credit Card Payoff calculator. This can be a great help when planning your budget. You have a budget, right? --Gary Silverman, CFP® |

Gary's Soapbox
Home For Business I have two states that I consider "home." One is California and one is Texas. They are as similar and as different as two states can be. While most can immediately think of many differences, most may not consider these similarities: both are large states, have miles of coastline, a diverse environment, huge oil reserves, big population, large economy, are major importers and exporters and have a very large and growing Hispanic population. In other words, the people may think these states are different, but they tend to have similar problems. That's why I found it quite intriguing that in a survey of 500 CEOs last year, Texas ranked number one as having the most business-friendly environment. California came in last. This is not a new phenomenon. The rankings have been the same for the last seven years.
Of course, being business-friendly is not the end-all in measuring one state to another. After all, if you allowed chemical plants to dump their raw waste into a nearby river, while could be seen as business-friendly, few would want to live there.
Still, being business-friendly does have its perks. The business-friendly state surely gets an edge when businesses are looking for a place to open a new manufacturing plant, along with gaining the jobs that go with it. And as long as Texas realizes that we not only need to be a place that is good to run a business, but also one that is good to live in, we'll do fine. Of course, that's a work in progress.

Money 101: Avoid Scams
Tax Season Predators Abound; Don't Be Fooled
Each year, people receive emails, phone calls, faxes and other notices from those claiming to be from the IRS. They often use the IRS logo to appear to be "the real deal" in order to make you feel comfortable handing over personal information, such as your Social Security number.
Here you can find steps to take if you receive any of these fraudulent communications. Remember, the IRS never contacts taxpayers by email to request information.
Most of these fraudsters are taking part in a scam called phishing. Learn more about it, and ways you can protect yourself and your identity
