Money 101 JANUARY 7, 2011 |
Howdy!
Happy New Year! If you are like me, you are hitting the ground running in 2012. The day to day is busy, and I'm preparing for two upcoming seminars. One I mentioned in the last newsletter. On January 12, I will be part of "The Talk: The Parent Care Conversation." Four expert speakers will discuss the importance of having a plan for aging parents regarding their medical, legal, financial and emotional needs. It will be held at the Lexington Suites ( 1917 Elmwood, Wichita Falls) on Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
On the following Wednesday, January 18, I will be discussing the same topic in Austin (by myself this time) at the JCC Main Community Hall at 7300 Hart Lane from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Stop by if you are in the area. The number there is 512-735-8086.

Gary's Soapbox
Well, I'm a Certified Financial Planner®
again. No, I never lost the designation, but every two years I have to reapply to keep it. Part of the requirement is 32 hours of continuing education. I submitted 52 hours. I forgot about four more. And that's only counting the continuing education I was able to get credit for. Many lectures, workshops, and courses are quite valuable to me (and hence, to my clients) but they don't count for CE purposes. Then there's the tens of thousands of pages of written material I go through each year. (Yes, I skim a lot of it.)
In other words, I keep learning. I do it expand my areas of knowledge. I do it to deepen them as well. I do it to learn new, refresh old, and correct what has changed. I do it because I have to, because I should, and because I like to. I do it so that my clients don't have to.
Gotta go. There's an educational webinar about to start!

Money 101: The Economy
News Is Positive at Home; Not So Much in Europe
Since the November Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, the economic recovery has been subject to both positive and negative forces. Fears of deflation and excessive inflation continue to subside, with measures of inflation expectations converging at 2 percent. Home prices appear to have stabilized, and private employment figures have undergone positive revisions. In contrast, real gross domestic product (GDP) growth for the third quarter was revised downward to an annualized 2 percent from the initial release of 2.5 percent, and the economy faces downside risks from the situation in Europe.

OK, that economy stuff was pretty heavy. Here's a little something to lighten the load, from the "tech support" files:
Tech Support: "I need you to right-click on the Open Desktop." Customer: "OK." Tech Support: "Did you get a pop-up menu?" Customer: "No." Tech Support: "OK. Right-click again. Do you see a pop-up menu?" Customer: "No." Tech Support: "OK, sir. Can you tell me what you have done up until this point?" Customer: "Sure. You told me to write 'click' and I wrote 'click.'"
Sincerely,
