MARK YOUR CALENDARS
THURSDAY, AUGUST 11
5:30 PM to 7:30 PM
Free Seminar at the Courtyard by Marriott Wichita Falls
3800 Tarry Street (off Lawrence across from Wal-mart)
Our next seminar will cover estate planning, especially wills, powers, and trusts. The featured guest will be attorney C.Dan Campbell.
This is one you don't want to miss. So many people, my clients included, seem to put off either creating or updating their estate plans. They have wills naming executors they no longer want, or that were written based on outdated tax laws. They don't have powers of attorney set up so that if they are incapacitated, their loved-ones will have to go to court to handle their affairs. They don't provide for someone to determine medical care when they can't do it themselves. And little thought is given on whether giving a lot of money to a beneficiary all at once is a good idea.
So, please try to come to this seminar to learn about what goes into a good estate plan. RSVP soon as we do have limited seating for this one.
Please RSVP by responding to this email, calling the office at 940-692-6885, or filling out the RSVP form , so we can make sure to have enough handouts and snacks for all. |

Gary's Soapbox
Being a frequent business flyer, I've been interested in the talk lately about inappropriate searches. You hear about the frisking of young children, the elderly, and even babies. The public is outraged and politicians are responding. Texas was even proposing a law to make it a crime for a screener to inappropriately search someone.
It is very understandable that a child, after being told their whole life at home and in school about inappropriate touching, can become upset during a pat-down. And no parent I know is exactly thrilled with strangers putting their hands all over their children. Most would think it is ludicrous to suspect a baby of working for a terrorist cell. And all of us would sympathize with an elderly lady required to remove her soiled diaper for inspection or a veteran having to put his artificial leg through the x-ray machine.
That this upsets and infuriates the public is to be expected.
But let's think about this a moment. If you were running a terrorist cell and you knew that certain items or individuals were not going to be inspected, what would you do? If possible, you'd try to find someone who was sympathetic to your cause. If not, then you'd try and find a way to get them to carry a device unknowingly. That this not only could happen but has happened around the world underscores this point.
Yes, better communication with the flying public would be nice. Yes, sensitivity by the screeners will help a lot. Yes, some procedures can be changed. But curtailing pat-downs of folks or inspections of items because they don't meet our idea of what a terrorist "looks like" isn't the answer.
Does this mean the terrorists win? Well, last I saw we put our president in an armored car instead of a convertible these days. So you be the judge of whether it's a win for the other side or prudence on ours.
For me, personally, I'll just be happy if they keep the planes I fly in bomb-free.

Next, Gary gives examples of what you should ask your potential advisor , including what qualifications they have and if they've ever been disciplined by a regulatory or professional agency.
To wrap this series up: a discussion about how advisors get paid . Fee-based, fee-only and commission structures are defined, and Gary touches on what it means to be a fiduciary.

Our little area of Texas (if any area of Texas can be called "little") has gone close to two months of continuous 100-degree-plus days. But the number doesn't do it justice. Here's some examples of how hot it's been:
A mosquito recently killed was examined and found to be carrying a canteen.
Chicken farmers are giving the chickens crushed ice to keep them from laying hard-boiled eggs.
A 20 lb catfish had ticks on it!
A fire hydrant was seen bribing a dog.
Baptists are starting to baptize by sprinkling, the Methodists are using wet-wipes, the Presbyterians are giving out rain-checks, and the Catholics are praying for the wine to turn back into water.
Yep, it's dry.
Sincerely,
 Gary Silverman, CFP®

P.S. If you want to escape the heat for a few hours on August 11, remember our free seminar. The A/C is quite frosty. |
