JULY 5, 2011
Hello!

Like they say, there's nothing as constant as change, and our newsletter reflects that. We are in the process of making a few changes, like today's layout, that we hope you will enjoy. As always, you'll hear a bit about what's on Gary's mind and we'll share links to Gary's  most recent Times Record News articles. Take a look at the sidebar to the left; the quick links take you to various places on our website and the Facebook button takes you directly to our business page.

Feel free to share this email with your friends by forwarding to them using the link at the bottom, or using the social media buttons on the top.

Have a great week!

Why Stop There, Rick?
Gary Silverman, CFP
Recently my governor, Rick Perry, vetoed a law that would have made sending or reading text messages while driving illegal in Texas. He feels that this would be an unnecessary intrusion into the lives of Texans. How dare the government micromanage the behavior of adults! Apparently wanting a driver to actually look at the road is somehow not a good use of government power.

If that's the case, I say why stop there? Let's get rid of laws requiring the use of seat belts and car seats. What about the law that prevents me from tinting my windshield to keep out the Texas sun? And this is a big state; let's take down those speed limit signs. I'm sure there are a whole host of laws we can get rid of to keep the government from micromanaging we adults.

Frankly, seeing the effects of people texting while driving, I wouldn't mind a bit of that micromanagement. Especially when it involves that driver coming at me down a two-lane country road.

In this article, Increased Taxes or Spending Cuts; Pick Two, Gary wraps up his discussion about the hard decisions our country needs to make in order to get our debt under control. As you'll see, when you rob Peter to pay Paul, you make few merry.

In order to better help you understand how you should go about finding someone to help you with your money, Gary's started a series called "Choosing An Advisor." To begin, it's important to understand that not one advisor fits all.

For the July Biz-to-Biz, Gary recounts his recent trying experience at a retail store to remind business owners they need to think like the customer. Don't worry, he couldn't stay away from the Container Store for too long.

Have you heard of the Anthropocene era? It's the era we've moved into, where the world's ecosystems are dominated by an increasingly homogeneous and limited suite of crops, live-stocks and creatures that are in some way tended by humans. Read more about this new geological age and what it means for our planet.

To wrap up this week's newsletter, I thought I'd share a story that answers the question, "Why go to church?".

One Sunday morning a mother went in to wake her son and tell him it was time to get ready for church, to which he replied, "I'm not going."

"Why not?" she asked.

"I'll give you two good reasons,' he said. "One, they don't like me, and two, I don't like them."

His mother replied, "I'll give you two good reasons why you SHOULD go to church. One, you're 59 years old. And two, you're the pastor!"

Sincerely,
