One Last Joke Before We Say Goodbye To Winter

I just got off the phone with a friend living in Minnesota, near the Canadian border.

He said that since early this morning the snow has been nearly waist high and is still falling. The temperature is dropping way below zero and the north wind

is increasing to near gale force.

His wife has done nothing but look through the kitchen window and just stare.

He says that if it gets much worse, he may have to let her in.

Japan, And Others, In Our Prayers

I woke up a bit early Friday morning (3 a.m. to be exact) and never got back to bed. That's because I saw the news alert of an earthquake in Japan. When I turned on the T.V., I was greeted with the scene of a house, several cars and a moderate-sized ship floating over a seawall and under a highway bridge (the ship and house didn't fit too well).

By now you know much more about the extent of the devastation. Obviously, those affected should be in our thoughts and prayers.

At the same time, let's remember the many people who are still trying to rebuild their lives in Indonesia. Losing most of your friends and family, all the buildings of your village, and even some of your coastline takes more than a few years to get over. And let's not forget the people of Haiti, many of whom are still enduring appalling conditions in tent cities; or the folks in Chile. Then there's the displacement of the refugees and other victims of civil strive from the Middle East, along with other parts of the world.

With all of that, at the end of our prayers, perhaps a thank you is in order as well. We may have had a bad day, but for most of us it was much more a blessing, all things considered.

 Expect the Unexpected

Thursday night, most of you didn't head to bed expecting reports of disaster on the other side of the world upon awakening. A couple of months ago, most of you didn't expect Middle East dictatorships falling like dominoes. This time last year, most of you didn't expect your tank of gas to cost so much.

That's the problem with expectations, as well as the bit of foreseeing that goes with them. Sometimes...really, all the time...what seemed like a constant ends up revealing itself as a variable.

Make sure you are prepared for a tomorrow that brings with it many surprises.

Or, as the great sage said, "stuff happens."
