 Wisdom from Wooden

Success comes from knowing that you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming.

Be prepared and be honest.
Talent is God given. Be humble. Fame is man-given. Be grateful. Conceit is self-given. Be careful.

There are many things that are essential to arriving at true peace of mind, and one of the most important is faith, which cannot be acquired without prayer.

You can't live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you.

Learn as if you were to live forever; live as if you were to die tomorrow.

Lessons from Wooden

We've begun running many of Coach John Wooden's observations on life on the side column of this newsletter. I had the opportunity to meet Coach Wooden about five or so years ago at a financial workshop where he gave one of his talks about the right way to behave in business. I was not following college basketball back in his heyday, so while I knew the name, I really didn't know the man or his accomplishments.

With his recent death, I began revisiting his Pyramid of Success. I'm glad I did. On the way back from a recent trip, the plane broke and I was stuck in an airport for 14 hours waiting for a midnight plane back to Texas. How could they do this to me? But then I heard Coach's voice telling me to have patience, exhibit some self-control, and see the blessing that is there for me if I would only open my eyes.

I did, and ended up having one of my most productive days of the trip.

Gary will be hosting this free seminar on July 29 from 5:30 to 7:30pm at the Courtyard by Marriott, 3800 Tarry St. Wichita Falls, TX (off Lawrence, across from Wal-Mart).

When the market is riding a roller-coaster, your emotions may be going through some 'loop-the-loops' of their own. Don't let those scary times compel you to make investment decisions you'll regret.

Investing Foundations will cover the basics of investing by outlining base strategies and philosophies to prepare you for the inevitable market swings.

This seminar, Investing Foundations, is the second in a series of seminars that look at different aspects of investing, insurance, retirement planning and estates.

We will be serving light refreshments and will have handouts, so please RSVP to 940-692-6885 or Gary@personalmoneyplanning.com. This will help us ensure we have enough of both.

parting thoughts

Hello, my name is...

Recently we held an extraordinarily unscientific and extremely biased survey of friends and employees to try to "label Gary". The choices were Whiz, Brainiac, Success, Sage, or Rebel. All of the definitions were flattering, so I really didn't care what they came up with.

The result was pretty much unanimous: The Sage. The definition of The Sage is "who offers wise answers and effective advice that takes into account a balanced range of perspectives."

Well, I try, but I'm not yet to the point of insisting people call me "The Sage," Your Sageness," or "Oh, Sagest One!" After all, I already ordered my new business cards and can't get the title on them until next year.

That's all, for now.
