 John Wooden Quotes

Success is never final, failure is never fatal. It's courage that counts.

Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.

Consider the rights of others before your own feelings, and the feelings of others before your own rights.

Failure is not fatal, but failure to change might be.

Material possessions, winning scores, and great reputations are meaningless in the eyes of the Lord, because He knows what we really are and that is all that matters.

Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.

Shhh, don't tell Gary...

... I've taken over the Personal Money Planning Newsletter.

OK, just this section. Just this once (for now).  But I am sending it out a whole day early. That's it. My capacity for mutiny only goes so far.

I just wanted to extend an invitation to all of Gary's readers for the Father's Day Weekend Book Signing at Books-a-Million, Sikes Senter in Wichita Falls, TX. My story, "Melody of the Heart" was included in Chicken Soup for the Soul: Thanks, Dad. I will be talking about my writing experiences and signing this and other Chicken Soup titles I've contributed to.  So, if you stop in to Books-a-Million on Saturday, June 19 between 1-4 p.m. come and say hello!

Now, back to our regularly scheduled newsletter!

Happy Father's Day!

The Heavy Shackles of China's "Hukou"
Here's a look inside Chinese society; since 1953, citizens have been divided into two strata, urban and rural, on a hereditary basis.  The country's registration system ("hukou" in Chinese) was originally intended to stop rural migrants from flowing into the cities; today, it affects access to education, health care and housing, and compensation payouts.  To be classified as an agricultural peasant for life means living as a second class citizen.  Or worse; in 2003, a college-educated migrant who moved from one city to another was detained by police for failing to produce a required identity document, and was beaten to death.

Gary Regains Control

I'm pleased to report that the marketing specialist rebellion has ended peacefully. I've recovered control of the e-newsletter and everything should be back to normal for next time.

Being the nice guy that I am, I decided to let this one go. After all, Chicken Soup is supposed to be good for you, right? I don't want to deprive any of my readers that wholesome goodness.

If you meet Tina on Saturday (or at an upcoming seminar, or in the office) feel free to grill her on how she finds places to send her writing or how she comes up with writing ideas, especially if you have always been interested in sharing your own stories. She will probably send you to her blogand offer you a free subscription to her own e-newsletter that includes a monthly list of writing contests.

Enjoy your weekend, and your hobbies--writing, skydiving, whatever they may be.

That's all, for now.
