July 2010 Astia Newsletter

Sharon Vosmek, CEO Astia

Message from the CEO

Collaboration is not just sharing calendars!

It is time to rethink the way we work together, especially as we strive to maintain the momentum and induce an acceleration of women´s participation in high growth entrepreneurship. This month we are excited to 1) report the results of the inaugural We Own It Summit collaboration, 2) provide a review of the many articles highlighting Astia´s participation in the conversations about the participation of women, and 3) showcase the progress of our clients!

Convened by Astia, The Kauffman Foundation and 24 organizations, the We Own It Summit was an effort to move beyond the sharing of calendars to true collaboration. Participant organizations intend to leverage our limited resources, create a common understanding of the need for change, and establish and measure the shared goals to create that change. The day included workshops and panels designed to identify and commit to one and ten-year goals for the collaboration. The goals can be reviewed in detail on the Summit website>>.

Already we are seeing results out of the Summit. The media buzz around the issues facing women entrepreneurs has been outstanding. Examples include my piece Businessweek: Closing the Venture Capital Gender Gap, an article in Forbes; The Need for More Female Venture Capitalists, and a call for more women to start high growth businesses in Huffington Post by Liz Hamburg. And I must confess to being thrilled to be named as one of the Five Finance Twitter Feeds Worth Following by Wall Street Journal blogger Julie Steinberg (not to mention I was delighted to be in great company with Cindy Padnos of Illuminate Ventures, 85 Broads and LearnVest).

Cheers and I hope you are all enjoying some summer fun!

Partner Spotlight

Woman 2.0

As part of our strategic relationship with Women 2.0, Astia is proud to provide a scholarship for Women 2.0 Labs. Women 2.0 Labs is a new 5-week program for engineers, biz dev folks, and marketing mavens to develop the first steps and an initial prototype for a future high-growth technology venture. As an after-hours, rapid prototyping program for future founders, people with an entrepreneurial spirit can test out an idea or experience building a startup from scratch while still keeping their current full time job. It allows candidates to meet their future founding partners. This Women 2.0 program is open to both women and men.

Woman 2.0 expects participants from this session to go and grow their startups or apply to programs such as Astia´s Doing it Right program.
