April 2010 Astia Newsletter

Sharon Vosmek, CEO Astia

Message from the CEO

Wow! Did you see the front page of Sunday's New York Times Business Section?

I certainly had fun seeing the Astia name in print. It made me especially proud of our clients, our community, our programs, and our message - that women are an untapped potential for the innovation economy and that Astia can be a place for women and men together to reach their full potential. We say it best in our mission: Astia propels women's full participation as entrepreneurs and leaders in high-growth businesses, fueling innovation and driving economic growth.

It is our belief that it is the advisors who surround the individual, as much as the individual herself, who can ensure the success of the start-up. To this end, we at team Astia are committed to maintaining a rich community dedicated to the success of our clients. This work is generously supported by corporations, foundations, and individuals. If you have not yet made your annual contribution to Astia, I encourage you to do so today! Astia is a very lean nonprofit - every one of your dollars goes directly to support the program and ecosystem that is Astia. And quite honestly, we cannot do it without your support. Click here today to make your contribution!

The article also highlighted for me that we cannot do this work alone. It is through the efforts of many individuals and groups together that we will increase women's participation in all ends of the high growth food chain: from girls in math & science programs, to women in engineering, to women entrepreneurs, to women CEOs, to women in the board room, to women investors. We collectively in our efforts intend an environment where every woman who seeks her full potential has every opportunity open to her. I do hope you will join us in this work - with your support, your participation, and your voice!

Cheers,

Sharon Vosmek

Chief Executive Officer

India

Following the comments from Anurakt Jain, Draper Fisher Jurvetson India and Chair of Astia India Advisory Board last month we continue to build awareness for Astia and expand the Advisory Board for India.

The role of the local Advisory Boards is essential for Astia's model and evolution globally. Astia India Advisory Board is the body that provides programmatic leadership and support to the Astia programs to be delivered in India.

Members of the Advisory Board lend their personal and professional endorsement to the organization. They serve as ambassadors to the broader investment and entrepreneur community by providing introductions and opportunities to network. They serve as industry expert advisors to the Astia leadership relative to programmatic direction and execution.

We are recruiting the initial Board of up to fifteen members in the first year to closely work with the Astia team to drive the strategy across the country. Ideal candidates are entrepreneurs, LPs, VCs, leading CEOs, industry experts and thought leaders.

Astia Market Spotlight

Life Science Market Trends

  • While there has been a general decline in private equity fundraising for life science funds over the past few years, fundraising is expected to grow modestly as the world economy recovers from its slump and more investors channel their capital back to this sector

  • All life science venture funds raised 19% of the aggregate capital secured by all venture funds from Jan-Sept of 2009

Key Pure Life Science Funds

  • US based firms dominate the 10 largest pure life science funds to have reached a final close

  • US focused life science private equity funds have attracted far more aggregate capital than their global counterparts for each of the past three years, securing more than $4 billion in 2007, $2.4 billion in 2008 and nearly $2.5 billion from Jan-Sept of 2009

  • European focused pure life science funds have also had an impact on global fundraising, drawing around $1.6 billion in aggregate capital in 2007 and 2008. Fundraising in 2009, however, was more of a challenge with only $70 millon in commitment

  • Pure life science fundraising in Asia and Rest of World is still in its infancy, with $620 million raised in 2007, and $80 million from Jan-Sept of 2009
