December 2009 Astia Newsletter

Sharon Vosmek, CEO Astia

Message from the CEO

I love the holidays!

I get to slow down a bit and reflect — and I get to do what a CEO does — remind you all of the critical role you play in our success. Your time and expertise are invaluable to the community — and so is your financial support. Contributions from individuals just like you provide us with the vital support we need, as a not-for-profit organization, to continue offering high-caliber programs and in order to maintain the ecosystem for the benefit of high growth women entrepreneurs.

So, with that in mind — this is my official Astia ask. Please make a year-end tax deductible donation to Astia today!

Your financial support is an important validation of the work we do to propel women´s full participation as entrepreneurs and leaders in high-growth businesses, fueling innovation and driving economic growth. As we head into 2010, we face tremendous opportunities — and have significant needs — to maintain the momentum from 2009.

Thanks to your support and the generous support of others, 2009 has been a strong year for Astia but we know we can do more with your support. In 2009:

• 73 start-ups were invited to join Astia´s transformative programs in Silicon Valley, New York and London with 40 of them qualifying to present to investors.

• We once again saw two Astia clients exit, both from the presenting class of 2007, Paymo, Inc (formerly mTN Global) was acquired in July by Boku and the College Company / Tuition Coach was acquired this month by SimpleTuition, Inc.

• In November we honored 3 exceptional female innovators as nominated by last year´s winners. Eva Chen, CEO and co-founder, Trend Micro; Astia client, Chris Meda, CEO and President, Arcxis Biotechnologies; and Kelly Smith, Ph.D, CTO and co-founder, Pasteuria Bioscience were honored at this year´s 5th Annual Astia Awards — once again, the Astia community served as a broadcast agent for the success that women have achieved in high-growth start-ups.

For the 2009 Annual December Fundraising Drive we have a goal of raising $130,000. Cate Muther, founder of Astia, has committed a Challenge Donation of $5,000 and we already have another $45,000 committed towards the December goal. Please join the generosity of Cate and many other Astia community members and help us to reach our goal.

It´s easy — you can do it right online on the Astia website. And it will feel so good!

Feel the impact of Astia in the words of our entrepreneurs:

"Astia was transformative for our company and for my own growth as an entrepreneur. It gave me access to a network of incredibly experienced and influential people within Silicon Valley who have had a tremendous impact on the progress our company has made in the last year and a half."

Shanna Tellerman, Founder & CEO, Sim Ops Studios and Business Week Best Young Tech Entrepreneurs 2009

"RumbaFish is a product of Astia and the Astia Advisory network — with their help I started a phenomenal new company and set it on a rocket ship forward with some of my first customers being other Astia companies. That is the power of Astia!"

Michelle Bonat, Founder & CEO, RumbaFish recently named "Innovative Application Software Company to Watch Under $100M" by IDC

"I found myself texting a CEO friend saying ´You should change your gender or partner with a woman so you can come to this´. It raised my game and put our company into a good network."

Martha Amram, Ph.D, CEO, Ennovationz

"I have gained a huge network of supporters and advisors and it is now up to us at AgilityBio to convert it to a success story."

Roli Khattri, Ph.D., CEO, Agility Bio

We have some remarkable programs and activities for 2010 already in planning, a strong pipeline of entrepreneurs interested and ready to get involved with the Astia community and with your generous donation we can continue to drive innovation and enable women to succeed.
And don´t forget, many companies provide Corporate Matching Donations so please let us know if you need Astia to provide any documentation.

Happy Holidays from all of us at Astia. We very much look forward to working with you all in 2010.

Cheers,

Sharon Vosmek

Chief Executive Officer

2009 Astia Donation Drive

Astia´s 2009 Annual Donation Drive

Thanks to your support and the generous support of others, 2009 has been a strong year for Astia but we know we can do more with your support. Please make a year-end tax deductible donation to Astia and provide us with the vital funds we need, as a not-for-profit organization, to continue offering our programs and services to impact an increasing community of women entrepreneurs globally. Our goal is to raise $130,000 in the month of December to put Astia on a strong footing for 2010.

Your support is an important validation of the work we do to propel women´s full participation as entrepreneurs and leaders in high-growth businesses, fueling innovation and driving economic growth.

We have just passed our first milestone in the Advisory Program and the 28 companies that went through the Doing it Right Silicon Valley Program are now working closely with their advisors from the Astia Community to prioritize various aspects of their business including preparing for the 8th Annual Astia Silicon Valley Investor Forum. The feedback from both the entrepreneurs and the advisors has continued to point to this being the highest caliber we have had the pleasure of working with! For many of the entrepreneurs this tremendous and generous support from their advisors is transformational.

"We met with our advisory team today and I just wanted to give you a round of applause. They were great! We are working on our investor pitch. With their help it is going from competent to WOW."
