November 2009 Astia Newsletter

Sharon Vosmek, CEO Astia

Message from the CEO

The importance of the network

Welcome to Global Entrepreneurship Week and Women’s Enterprise Day in the UK. The 5th Annual Astia’s Awards are a part of the week’s events, and I do look forward to seeing many of you there Thursday evening - last minute tickets are still available.

Yesterday I attended the PricewaterhouseCoopers Q3 2009 Shaking the Month Tree Report at Fenwick & West to hear what just happened and listen to others pontificate on what might happen next in the innovation sector with a specific focus on the venture capital industry. I feel compelled to share what I heard - for those of you currently fundraising – or for those of you who have an acute case of schadenfreude.

* The number of first round financings is down from last year by over half. First round financing dollars are down by half as well. Not since 2003 have we seen the number and size of first round deals at this level.
* Total venture dollars invested in Q1 2009 were at the lowest level since 1997 with a nearly 63% drop vs. Q1 2008.
* M&A activity is at its lowest in a decade (although it does seem to be picking up the second half of this year).
* In 2008 there were 6 venture-backed IPOs and this year there have been 8. In 2004 through 2007 there were 94, 57, 57 and 86 respectively. Ouch. That hurts.

OK, so let’s think about this as it relates to Astia – our clients and our community. This news means more than ever we need to invest in the fundamentals of running our companies. Bootstrapping and cash efficiency are Queen with revenues a “must have” for most early institutional investors.

So this is your Astia call to action.

Astia clients, be smart - tap in to the abundant talent around you. Many of you just received your Advisory assignments, get connected and listen and learn. To prior year clients, get reconnected with your prior Astia Advisors or reach out for new ones who are at the ready. Check out the online Advisor database and get connected.

If you have time and expertise to share and would like to get to know an Astia client, reach out and let us know – fill out your online profile . It is times like this when a strong network can make a real difference – Astia is your intentional network, committed to your success and your every challenge along the way.

And, keep in mind that everything cycles. Already there are over 150 IPOs just waiting for 2010 to hurry up and get here.

Looking forward to seeing you on the other side...

Cheers,

Sharon Vosmek

Chief Executive Officer

November 2-7 was the Silicon Valley Doing it Right Program for entrepreneurs. This year 28 companies participated in the elite program led by more than 150 speakers over a 6 day period culminating in presentations to peers and the Astia community on Saturday morning at the beautiful Reed Smith offices overlooking sunny San Francisco.

It was an extraordinary week! Our Monday morning keynote address by Stanford Professor, Tom Kosnik, focused on the triple chasms of generation, gender, and culture as it relates to negotiation.  That evening, the entrepreneurs were introduced to their Advisor teams with each receiving a VC, CEO and two others who will work closely with them over the next 9 weeks.

To best meet the specific needs of the entrepreneurs, companies were offered sector-specific workshops and panels. At one point we had Consumer, Enterprise, Clean Tech and Life Sciences workshops all happening simultaneously. On the final full day of program we continued to have separate tracks. For Consumer and Enterprise that meant a focus on Globalism and on how to Dance with Elephants! This was a fantastic panel of executives from Oracle, HP, Symantec, Microsoft and the Gap! For Clean Tech we had a focus on Washington being your central pocketbook and for Life Sciences the focus was on the Changing Regulatory environment. We finished the program on Saturday 7th with panels on Angel Investing and the State of Venture Capital and then the companies all presented to their peers and the Astia community.

We have some exceptional companies in the program this year and they are now actively working with their advisory teams on various aspects of their business.

"This was one of the best investments we could have made and I wish we had done it earlier. Not just the training, I believe I have gained a huge network of supporters and advisors and it is now up to us at AgilityBio to convert it to a success story." Roli Khattri, Ph.D., CEO, AgilityBio.

Investors can register now for the 8th Annual Astia Investor Forum at which select Astia companies will present to the investor community.
