A Message From the CEO

Dear Astia Community,
This weekend I had the good
fortune to take a peek into the future of innovation at the SMASH Academy Recognition Ceremony
at UC Berkeley's Lawrence Hall of Science. During the event I was both
exposed to the critical path for Silicon Valley
to continue to find innovation and compete in the next century, as well as the
key to Astia's relevance in the entrepreneur community.
SMASH, which stands for
Summer Math & Science Honors, is a program of the Level Playing Field Institute here in San Francisco. The Academy provides high achieving,
low-income students of color with rigorous courses that will prepare them to
excel in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) fields with the
goal of being admitted to top-tier colleges and graduate schools. The ceremony was to both honor the graduating
class of seniors and showcase the student's projects. As I watched these poised young boys and
girls present their ideas and technology solutions to a packed house I felt a
sense of profound humility and pride to be in the presence of such raw talent,
sheer brilliance, and passion.
The view in to the future was
made all the more clear by the frank comments of Mark Richards, Dean of the College of Letters and Science. Dean Richards called to our attention the
recent studies out of UC Berkeley and the University of Wisconsin which finally put to rest the stereotype that girls are not as good at math as boys. He went on to postulate - no hope - that it
would not take another 20 years of research for us all to accept that individuals of
all races and genders - when given a level playing field - perform equally.
The message was timely as we
prepare to launch the Astia
Doing it Right™ program - a program proven to facilitate both access
to capital and exposure to relationships that are critical to the success for
any start-up. Our work of unearthing the
hidden talent of women in high-growth start-ups is not just the
right thing to do - it is the smart thing to do.
I am often asked if women
entrepreneurs require something different than their male counter-parts. My simple answer is, "No. They require the
same thing."
I do hope you will all
continue to participate in our community of exceptional entrepreneurs. There are many opportunities to become involved. I look forward to seeing you all soon.
Cheers,
Sharon
