Design it
Cascade Median Design Contest
Beautifying Downtown with an eye on sustainability is the concept behind a design contest for the Cascade Ave. median between Pikes Peak and Colorado Avenues. With a $21,000 donation from Xerox, Inc., the City of Colorado Springs has launched the Cascade Smartscape Challenge, a regional design competition to transform a well-traveled corridor while adhering to environmental and financial sustainability.
The winning designer will be awarded $1,000. The retrofit will incorporate cutting-edge design and concepts such as permeable surfaces, native and xeric plants, recycled materials, local materials and low maintenance materials.
Entrants in the competition are not required to be licensed landscape architecture professionals but should have significant landscape planning, design, irrigation and maintenance background or partners who can provide this experience.
Submission Deadline: Friday, March 16,
2012, 3 pm
Evaluation Period: March 26 - April 6
Winner Notification: April 11-13
Community Announcements: In celebration of
Earth Day, April 20 and 21
A team of community professionals, City staff and elected officials will evaluate each entry. The winner will be chosen by the highest ranking based on the following criteria: imparting a sense of place, dramatic and cutting edge design, using sustainable and best management principles, infiltration of water and permeable elements, splash border, plant material, Xerox sign design and placement, use of reused/recycled/local materials, fine/accent grading, accent lighting, use of hardscape/boulders/mulches, treatment of public art, irrigation and water budget, maintenance plan/schedule and cost.

Growing Art
Peak Arts Fund Launching
Funding for local arts programs gets a huge boost this month with the launch of the Peak Arts Fund, an initiative developed by COPPeR in the last year. Christina McGrath, executive director of Copper, will oversee fund raising for the Peak Arts Fund.
Seed money has come from Pikes Peak Community Foundation, Inasmuch Foundation, Bee Vradenburg Foundation, Kirkpatrick Family Fund and the Ellyas Family Estate. Support from these founders ensures that all additional funds raised in the coming years will be distributed directly to the local community.
Fifteen nonprofits across the region have already been selected to receive funding in the inaugural year and include these Downtown organizations: Colorado Springs Conservatory, Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, Colorado Springs Philharmonic, and Cottonwood Center for the Arts.
For more information, email to info@coppercolo.org or call 634-2204.

The greenest day of the year
Celebrate St. Patrick's Day Downtown

Get your Irish on - or at least your honorary Irish! Start with a 5K Pedaling for St. Pat's, rolling out from America the Beautiful Park at 8:30 a.m. Rather run? A 5K foot race registration begins in Acacia Park at 8:30, followed by a 10 a.m. start time. An 11 a.m. Leprechaun Fun Run precedes the 12:00 noon start of the annual Parade. The Parade route heads south on Tejon, from St. Vrain to Vermijo. You can find details on these events, as well as a two-day expo on the preceding Thursday and Friday, at http://www.csstpats.com.
