'Tis the season
The Spirit of Giving
Want an extra special, truly feel-good holiday season? Give a gift to those who help strengthen our community by serving folks in need. Here are some ideas.

Think HOT, as in Homeless Outreach Team. Their recommendations on how to help the homeless in our community is to support any or all of these organizations:
Homeward Pikes Peak
http://www.homewardpikespeak.org/
Pikes Peak United Way
http://www.ppunitedway.org/
Catholic Charities
http://www.ccharitiescs.org/
Ecumenical Social Ministries
http://www.ecusocmin.org/
The New Hope Shelter
http://www.tsacs.org/services.html
Springs Rescue Mission

Nami Colorado Springs

Urban Peak

Liza's Place
http://www.gospel-home-cs.org
If you're not sure just who or what you'd like to support this season, check out the Indy Give drive running through the end of year. You'll have your pick of 40 nonprofits (who says you have to pick only one?!) - from arts and culture, to animals, to youth, environment and more. The more you contribute, the greater the cool rewards you'll earn. Visit www.indygive.com to learn more, and make an easy one-time online donation.
If you're more into the meaning of the holidays, you might want to consider a gift to one of the many Downtown churches. Find a list at www.downtown80903.com/visit/places-to-worship.
Winter months are often the toughest for our neighbors who struggle to heat their homes and keep food on the table. You can give them a holiday smile by supporting these efforts:
Project Cope - utilities payment assistance.
http://www.projectcopecs.org
Care and Share Food Bank - filling food pantries across the region. In addition to much needed cash donations, you can also host a food Drive, volunteer at a facility, or even help in the community garden.
www.careandshare.org
The 28th annual Gazette-El Pomar Foundation Empty Stocking Fund provides resources for 15 local health and human service agencies dedicated to helping people in crisis and assisting others in attaining self-sufficiency. In 2010, the Empty Stocking Fund raised more than $1 million and hopes to do it again this year to meet the growing demand for services in our community. You can make a secure online donation and/or participate by attending one of the many community events occurring this holiday season, from which a portion of proceeds is donated. Changing of the guard
DP Board of Directors 2012 Officers
The Downtown Partnership Board of Directors will greet the New Year with a new leadership slate. Sam Eppley, owner of Sparrow Hawk Gourmet Cookware, will serve as President. Brian Burnett, PhD, UCCS Vice Chancellor, has been named Vice President of the organization. Retired Pastor Gay Hatler will continue to serve as Secretary / Treasurer.
Our sincere gratitude is extended to outgoing President Chris Jenkins for his many years of dedicated service. |

Helping hands on the street
Downtown Ambassadors at your Service

All that shopping wearing you down? Not sure if you need to go left or right to get to your next destination? Help is probably right in front of your nose!
Just look for the bright orange vested volunteers strolling through Downtown. They may also be wearing orange ball or stocking caps, and black shoulder bags to hold maps and other literature. These are our Downtown Ambassadors. They can help you figure out your route, point you to the perfect rest spot, and more. Their role is mainly customer-service, but they will also be a valuable set of "eyes and ears" to help keep Downtown safe.

This is a joint effort of the Downtown Partnership, BID and CSPD, says DP's Executive Director, Ron Butlin. The volunteers are trained by CSPD and work in teams of two, patrolling in three-hour shifts between noon and 8 p.m. The pilot program runs through the end of the year and, if successful, will be reimplemented next summer. |

Downtown Beat
CSPD Officers Designated Downtown
Since early November, the Gold Hill Division has deployed two officers Downtown from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The officers perform a variety of tasks, most important of which is to provide a visible police presence in the area. They are primarily on foot with a patrol vehicle available to them. The officers are positively engaging pedestrians and merchants, addressing complaints, answering questions about various police-related issues, and providing a general sense of security. Additionally, you may notice them also paying attention to alleyways, parks and some of the more off beat areas Downtown as well as moving up and down Tejon Street. |

Mmmmm-mmm, delicious!
Step into Café Corto
Who loves local coffee shops? We do and once you discover Café Corto, you will, too! The Café Corto Coffee Gallery offers great coffee, art, culture and community.
"Some try and serve coffee, some try to serve espresso ... WE SERVE PEOPLE!" is one of several mottos defining this charming new establishment at 115 E. Kiowa Street.
Owned and operated by Benjamin Gallegos-Pardo ("coffee nut"), Katherine Gallegos-Pardo ("sharpest sense of humor this side of the Mississippi") and Rebecca Gallegos ("best Grandma in the UNIVERSE ... who happens to love the Gypsy Kings), Café Corto serves up Spanish Peaks coffee, espresso and a "no nonsense" food menu. Sundays feature hearty bowls of a secret-family-recipe soup, and Mondays are Open Mic Night - for live music, poetry readings or even improv comedy.
If you become a regular, you're certain to get "mugged." You'll just have to stop in or visit www.cafecorto.com to get the whole scoop. You can also ring in to (719) 577-4347. Hours are Monday through Wednesday, 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Thursday and Friday, 6:30 a.m. to midnight; Saturday, 9 a.m. to midnight; and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

| Gift it
Something for Everyone
Sometimes, your holiday get-up-and-go creativity ends up "got-up-and-went." You've still got several names on your list, and you're running on empty for ideas.
For a gift that's sure to please every one of them, think Downtown Gift Card!
Available in amounts from $10 to $500 (and more if he or she is really the target of your affections), the Downtown Gift Card is good at more than 100 area merchants, from the many one-of-a-kind boutiques to local food hotspots and everything in between. The cards can be purchased online at www.downtown80903.com or at the Downtown Partnership offices, 111 S. Tejon, Suite 309, Monday through Fridays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. You can also call us at (719) 886-0088 to order and pick up or have mailed.

In style
Salon Ivan
If you want to look great, get a great cut and, before or after, a natural manicure or pedicure. And if you want the experience to be high quality and highly personalized, look no further than Salon Ivan, 101 N. Tejon (but enter on Kiowa).
This intimate, one-chair-for-your-hair and one-chair-for-your-nails high-end salon, owned by Ivan and Michelle Woolum, has become Downtown's best-kept style secret in its first six months. Both have more than 20 years experience, on both coasts and several spots in between, but decided Colorado Springs was where they really wanted to be.
Ivan offers cuts and color for men, women and teenagers. Michelle provides only natural manicures and pedicures (no acrylics!) and offers the super long-lasting gel nail polish. Salon Ivan is open Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. or call 645-8382 to schedule an evening or Saturday appointment. |
Puzzled no more
We've got answers

Maybe our city's next tagline ought to be Where Athletes are Larger than Life. First came Danny Pate for the U.S. Pro Cycling Challenge; now comes the effervescent Rachel Flatt, promoting the upcoming Four Continents event at the World Arena - in a larger-than-life mural adorning the former Chase Bank building (now owned and occupied by Braxton Technologies) at 6 N. Tejon Street. Mayor Bach will dedicate the mural on Monday, December 19, at 11:15 a.m.
According to Barbara Reichert, Director of Communications for U.S. Figure Skating, Rachel is "a Cheyenne Mountain High School graduate, Olympian and all-around good woman." We agree!
Visit www.worldarena.com to learn more about or purchase tickets for the February 2012 figure skating championship event. |
