Streetscape Improvements
Thanks to funding from the Parking Enterprise, Cascade Avenue is getting its share of Business Improvement District streetscape updates. According to City Parking Administrator Greg Warnke, the east side stretch of Cascade between Platte and Pikes Peak Avenues is getting a facelift. Look for nicer sidewalks, bump outs, lights, pavers and more. Warnke expects minimal traffic disruption - and only between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Work on these streetscape improvements should be complete by the end of November.

No whine and plenty of spirit(s)
Only at Vintages
Vintages Wine and Spirits, that is. If you haven't been to this decade-plus Downtown mainstay, you're missing out on some incredible wines and, better yet, deals on incredible wines.
Owned by Erin and Michael Collins since 1997, Vintages is about 900 square feet of mostly wines, half domestic and half international, priced anywhere from $5 to $500 bottles. Erin describes the selection as "esoteric" - instead of Yellow Tail, check out the artisanal Red Silk Shiraz from a small Australian, family owned vineyard. And many others.
Vintages hosts Friday wine tastings, offers deals like "pick your own" case for $100, and quarterly specials, all covered at www.vintageswines.com.
When Downtown hosts a major event, like the
recent Peoples Pedal Party, it can be tough on merchants. But Erin finds the opportunity in such challenges, turning "lemons into lemon drops." During that event, the savvy shop owner gave minglers on the street in front of the shop a glass and sample mix (as well as a $1 coupon) which they could take inside to create and taste the actual drink. "It turned out to be a fabulous day," she says.

Can you guess?
Downtown Puzzler
Yes, it's detail from artwork. But this is bigger-than-life artwork. Part of the artist-within-the-painting's subject matter is a major clue. Can you guess what and where and why it is?

Grin and bear it
Grizz at Home Downtown
No doubt you've seen him, hanging out in the Pikes Peak Avenue median across from Phantom Canyon. Unlike his live counterparts, this fella is a sweetheart. Grizz II by local sculptor Richard Jagoda was recently purchased by Community Ventures, Inc. and will soon be gifted to the City as another permanent work of art. Grizz initially debuted during the 2000 Art on the Streets exhibition and has remained Downtown ever since.

Richard Jagoda is a Colorado Springs native and has always enjoyed art and working with his hands. As a boy, he developed an interest in sculpture when he lived in Japan after WWII. Jagoda holds a Bachelors of Fine Art from Colorado State University, has taught design and drawing at CSU, and has taught art at Durango High and North Junior High.
Jagoda works in both stone and steel. Another of his sculptures, Bison Americanus, was part of the inaugural year for Art on the Streets in 1999. Since then, more than 180 pieces of sculpture have been displayed throughout Downtown with nearly 100 regional, national and international artists participating in the program. Sixteen pieces of sculpture have been purchased by Community Ventures and gifted to the City for their permanent collection.

It's Jamaican, mon
Spice Island Grill

After more than a decade operating a mobile concession - and a jump-around Air Force career - Claudette Hutchinson and her husband, Glenroy, decided to make Colorado Springs their retirement home. But retirement was only from the military; they couldn't give up what they really loved doing: cooking. As in Jamaican-inspired dishes from Claudette's homeland. In August, they opened Spice Island Grill in the space formerly occupied by El Tesoro Restaurant.
If you've had it, you love it. If you haven't, you will. We're talking jerk shrimp, chicken wings, pepper shrimp. Rice and "peas," curried goat and chicken, ackee and salt fish. And more. After all that spice, a little bit of sweet: coconut cake, pineapple and apple upside-down cake, carrot cake, rum cake and flan. Claudette brought out an uncle from New York to serve as chef, and she cooks alongside him, too.
"So far, so good," Claudette says. "We've had a really good response."

Puzzled no more
We've got answers
This massive mural canvassing the side of a building just south of First United Methodist Church depicts only part of what goes on inside of it: music, dance, art and a host of creative endeavor. What you don't see but can discover for yourself is that The Mission Arts Center is a unique place fostering a deeper spirituality through the healing power of the arts.

Drawing, painting, pottery, mixed media and performing arts classes are offered at minimal or no cost and are open to the public. Instructors are artist volunteers who have passed a rigorous background check. Programs can be custom designed for non-profit organizations, too. Open studio is available each month for artists to come and share time and thoughts together. The MAC has a gallery available for artists seeking exhibit space.
Check out and register soon for fall classes at Mission Arts Center.
Art allows us to see in ways that otherwise we could not. It is, in many cases, transformative. For those who are in a difficult time in their lives the MAC is a safe place, a sanctuary of sorts, where broken hearts are mended and wounded souls find a piece of their healing. We provide a place where art and light can transform moments of hopelessness into days of hope. |
