Cycling into summer

Roll with the pros

In honor of the summer's newest big event - The USA Pro Cycling Challenge, http://www.usaprocyclingchallenge.com/ - Downtown will soon be flying 30 new colorful banners (among its many others), but these will depict a racing cyclist.

The Pro Cycling Challenge, with its Prologue slated for Colorado Springs on August 22, will feature 16 international teams and 128 of the world's gutsiest riders competing over seven days, in 11 Colorado cities, for 600 grueling "man against mountain" miles. This spectacular race is reported to be the most demanding cycling event ever on American soil, on par with the legendary Tour de France. It's little wonder that the Challenge is a long-held vision embraced and brought to fruition by seven-time Tour winner Lance Armstrong.

For information on preparing and following the race as a fan, visit http://www.pedaldancer.com/p/quiznos-pro-challenge.html.

Watch this summer for a gigantic racer to also grace the west side of the Alamo building, which is near the race's finish.

Leading up to and following the Prologue, there will be numerous local challenges and contests, for all ages and abilities, as well as an August 20 Opening Gala at the Crown Plaza Hotel and a rollicking Fanfest from 4 to 7 p.m. Downtown on August 21. Check out http://www.pikespeakcyclingsociety.org/calendar.html for all the details of the many ancillary events.

If you're an enthusiast, no need to wait for August to roll around.  June is Bike Month in Colorado, jumpstarted locally by the June 11 Starlight Spectacular late night ride. June 15th marks Ride Your Bike to Work Day, and will feature a free breakfast at the Pioneers Museum from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. Click here to register for the breakfast no later than June7, 2011.

Want to roll with the local VIPs?  Join the Mayor's Ride that day at 6 a.m., starting from University Village shopping center, just north of Garden of the Gods Road off Nevada. Then cruise to Downtown via the Pikes Peak Greenway Trail and America the Beautiful Park, along with new Mayor Steve Bach, all city council members who do not have schedule conflicts, Chief Myers (CSPD) and Chief Cox (CSFD), as well as Generals and senior staff members from many of the military installations in our community.

Let the good times roll!

Join us for a free, hands-on, how-to Social Media Workshop on June 15, 8 a.m., at the Kirkpatrick Bank conference room at 25 N. Cascade Ave. Sponsored by Downtown Partnership and the Business Improvement District, the workshop will be led by technology teacher and coach, Tucker Wannamaker. 13th annual Art on the Streets

Eleven new works of art from 11 artists from Colorado, New Mexico, Kansas and Arizona are about to appear throughout Downtown - and stay for the next year. Thirty-eight entries were received from across the country and overseas. The 13th annual Art on the Streets officially launches on June 24.

An invitation-only opening reception will be held that evening to introduce the artists and announce the top three winners, who will receive cash prizes.

Local art collectors and enthusiasts Kathy Loo and her husband, Jim Raughton, juried this year's exhibit. Loo is a highly regarded civic leader and philanthropist, who co-chaired the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center's recent capital campaign that made possible the spectacular addition to the original John Gaw Meem building. Kathy and her late husband, Dusty Loo, were discriminating collectors of 19th and 20th century Colorado landscape art that ultimately will become part of the FAC's permanent collection. Dr. Raughton is a lifelong collector, and three floors of his historic Denver house contain his outstanding collection of art and artifacts. Jim's career includes urban planning, environmental design and higher education. He was a planner for the cities of Aurora, Lakewood and Boulder, as well as a private consultant. He served as Vice President of the Colorado Community College System which included the Percent for Art Program for community college campuses throughout Colorado. He has volunteered for the Fine Arts Center's 75th anniversary celebration this year.

Art on the Streets is made possible through presenting sponsors US Bank, Nor'wood Development, G.E. Johnson and H. Chase Stone Trust.

Picturesque pots

Perfect on Tejon and Pikes Peak

They made such a visually stunning statement last year that we've purchased an additional 24 new GIANT flowerpots for Downtown this year, bringing the total to 36. The amazing planters are located along Tejon St., from Platte Ave. to Colorado Ave., and along Pikes Peak Ave., between Nevada and Cascade.

Phancy Pheasant owner Susan Godec originally conceived the idea, and donated her time and expertise to purchase flowers and design the planting layout. Thanks also go to Timerberline Landscaping, which donated a forklift and crew to place the 800-pound pots. C&C Sand contributed rock and dirt. Your local Business Improvement District purchased the new pots and flowers for them, and will maintain the planters through the season. Private party donations have added another $4,300 to the project budget, too.

Howdy, neighbor

Welcome, Gold Hill Java Downtown

After three years operating their Woodland Park coffee house, Kim and Paul Clarkson were looking to expand. When space opened up at 332 N. Tejon St., at the corner of Boulder, they seized the opportunity. Gold Hill Java Downtown will open this week. Initial hours are slated for 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Wednesday; 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday through Saturday; and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.

Gold Hill Java offers coffee from around the world - 25 to 30 different varieties at a time - including a large selection of Decaf, flavored, and organic and Fair Trade as available. The Clarksons roast it themselves. The store will also stock a significant variety of loose teas.

You'll be able to dine well at Gold Hill Java, too. Breakfast offerings include burritos, oatmeal, yogurt parfaits, bagels and pastries. Later day serves up wrapped sandwiches and salads, a $3 lunch menu with the likes of tuna or pb&j sandwiches, homemade macaroni and cheese and ... for an unbelievably delicious twist ... savory bread puddings! For more information, call 577-4291.

Can you guess?

Farmers Market returns to Acacia

For the freshest produce, clever crafts and more, you'll want to schedule a trip to the Monday Farmers Market in Acacia Park, now through October 10.

Miller Farms out of Platteville, CO will supply the 40 different pesticide-free types of produce, including 10 varieties of chiles as well as tomatoes, squash, greens and herbs. There will also be bedding plants of various herbs and perennials. Go to http://www.millerfarms.net/us/whatwegrow.html to see what items are generally available when.

Other vendors will also set up. Be sure to check out fresh bread, artisan cheeses, or grab a barbecue sandwich and some kettle corn. Get out of the office, purchase your weekly produce, and enjoy the park and occasional live music. Watch the kids play around Uncle Wilber - and maybe even dip your toes in, too. The Acacia Park Farmers Market will operate from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. or sell-out.

As streetside parking is busy during the summer season, we recommend the Bijou-Cascade parking garage.

Five candles (one to grow on!)

Happy Birthday, PeakRadar

Puzzled no more

We've got answers

The E. Howard Company Street Clock is a steadfast old timekeeper on the north side grounds of the Pioneers museum. Weighing one ton, the pendulum clock arrived in Colorado Springs in 1900, courtesy of the Johnson Jewelry Company. Its original home was at 26 E. Pikes Peak Ave. In 1906, Mahan Jewelers settled in the same place.

When First National Bank expanded in 1962, the clock had to be relocated. A prominent citizen, Dr. Cogswell, purchased it and donated it to the Colorado Springs Museum, then located on West Kiowa St. near the Pikes Peak Library District. Eventually the clock made its way to the old El Paso County Courthouse, which today we know as the Pioneers Museum. According to Matt Mayberry, Museum Director and City Cultural Services Manager, the 110-year old clock hasn't been restored since 1989 and needs it!

The Museum is exploring options to get that done.

Once the clock is again in good repair, any volunteers interested in handling its weekly winding?
