Wednesday, September 22, Rouse's work will be showcased "live" all day at the southwest corner of Tejon and Pikes Peak, in honor of the U. S. Olympic Assembly meeting that week at the Antlers Hilton.
Friday and Saturday, October 8 and 9, Rouse will be featured at the Peak at the Arts Global Artists Exchange Festival at the Pikes Peak Center. For more info, go to www.peakatthearts.com.

Artful escape
Paperclips heads to Michigan
Where, oh, where, have those giant red Paperclips gone?
The 2009 Art on the Streets winning sculpture by local artist Chris Weed graced the south entrance to Plaza of the Rockies for more than a year. But Weed gained entrance to ArtPrize-a massive, 1700-plus-piece art competition in Grand Rapids, Michigan- and earned an exhibit spot in the famed Calder (yes, as in Alexander) Plaza.
Paperclips was taken down from Tejon Street on September 8 and shipped north for the September 22 to October 19, 2010 show. Weed is hopeful to win some of the $449,000 prize pool. First place, at $250,000, wouldn't be so bad, he said. At ArtPrize, winners are selected entirely by public vote.
"It's great exposure and, let's face it, this is my business," he said. |

CSPD earns international recognition
The International Association of Chiefs of Police will honor the Colorado Springs Police Department at its meeting in late October. CSPD is being recognized for its "innovative thinking and collaborative work with the military, bar owners and community groups to reduce crime involving soldiers in the Downtown district."

Conserve and save
Free faucet program from CSU
Does your organization have a commercial kitchen? Corporate cafeterias, restaurants, and other industrial users with spray valves are eligible to receive free, highly efficient, high performance spray valve nozzles from Colorado Springs Utilities. Four difference nozzles are available to suit specific needs, with projected savings between $700-$900 per valve per year.
The free faucets are part of the Downtown Partnership's Sustainability Committee's efforts to incentivize a Green Restaurant Association, with the first step being water conservation.
In conjunction with this offer and to understand additional conservation opportunities, CSU is conducting a very short Colorado Springs Utilities 2010 Commercial Kitchen Survey.
A limited number of pre-rinse spray nozzles are available. To receive yours and to complete the survey, contact Frank Kinder, 668-3818, fkinder@csu.org or participate online at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CSU_Commercial_Kitchen_Online_Survey. |
On the run
Rusty relocates
He was just too cute to get so lost all by his lonesome on a busy stretch of Bijou Street. So at long last "Rusty"- the Tim Burton-esque snowman created by Doyle Svenby for the 2004 Art on the Streets exhibit, purchased by Community Ventures, and later gifted to the city-is getting a new home.
An ever playful spirit, Rusty will soon reside in Acacia Park, to be enjoyed by the young-at-heart of all ages. |

In 2009 the Downtown Development Authority provided a $2,500 matching grant for ESM for a mural that depicts what ESM does and who it serves. ESM is located at 201 N. Weber. For more information about the Festival of Trees, call Executive Director Carolyn McDole at 235-6042. |

Puzzled no more
We've got answers
Surprisingly, this feline is at Colorado College, a decorative element on the historic Van Briggle Pottery building that is now home to the college's facilities maintenance operations. You'll find it west of Cascade Avenue and southeast of the intersection of Uintah and Glen. The structure was a calling card for the famed pottery business, and operated under the Van Briggle moniker until 1968. The building is part of an historic walking tour promoted by CC, and is thus described:
The pottery building originally housed the salesroom, administrative offices, studios, kilns, workshops, and other functional rooms of the manufacturer and was designed to display the wares produced inside. Designed by Dutch architect Nicolaas van den Arend in a picturesque manner displaying Flemish farmhouse and Arts and Crafts influences, the building provides an overall impression of solidity, bright colors, and varied shapes and textures.
