Art on the Streets

The crowd was festive, the hors d'oeuvres were scrumptious, and 3 of the 13 selected artists went home from the June 26 opening reception for Art on the Streets with cash prizes.Art on the Street Winners

Local artist Chris Weed nabbed first prize with his whimsical giant "Paper Clips" sculpture, located in front of Plaza of the Rockies, 111 South Tejon. They're just outside the entrance to the COPPeR offices-and hard to miss at 23 x 15 feet!

The second place prize went to Michael Brohman of Denver for "Journey," an expressive/contemplative 32" x 11' x 39" bronze located across the street in front of the Terry Harris Judicial complex on Tejon Street.

Jason Stillman of Mesa, Arizona took home third prize for his "The Evolution of Flora." The 10.5' x 6.5' x 5' steel "tree" sits in the plaza fronting the Pikes Peak Center on Cascade Avenue, between Colorado and Vermijo.

Art on the Streets is a signature program of Community Ventures, Inc. and is sponsored by US Bank, Nor'wood Development and G.E. Johnson, as well as numerous patrons.

Make a difference

Be Big

Currently operating out of offices in Denver and Colorado Springs, Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Colorado is the largest youth mentoring agency in the state. Big Brothers Big Sisters helps young people to reach their potential and become stable, successful adults.

Big Brothers Big Sisters-Pikes Peak is seeking male mentors for children in the Colorado Springs community. Mentors must be at least 20 years of age and able to make a one-year commitment to meeting with a child (typically aged 7 to 12). Volunteers are expected to meet in the community with their "Little" from two to four times per month. The matches share mutually enjoyable activities decided upon by each "Big" and "Little," as well as agency sponsored large group activities. Each match receives professional support from BBBS staff members.

Mentors are needed for the traditional community based program as well as a new pilot program called "Operation Mentor." This program is targeted toward children who have one or both parents deployed overseas. Mentors with military background and/or knowledge are especially needed for this program. Please contact the BBBS office at (719) 633-2443 or visit www.biglittlecolorado.org for more information.

From the Downtown Snoopster

Our man in uniform

Downtown is served by a lot of men in uniform, but the Snoopster was curious about one in particular. I've often wondered: what could he be doing when he's not on the job serving his customers with prompt efficiency and cheerful greetings, day after day, delivery after delivery?

Curious about one of downtown's hard-working FedEx couriers, the Snoopster nosed into the professional and personal life of the charismatic Horacio Flores, or "Flo," as we know him.

What I discovered is that stepping in and out of stores and traffic isn't the only intricate movement that Flores makes.

In his seventh year on the Downtown route for FedEx, Flo says he requested this venue because he likes the fast pace and the customers. "I like the networking that goes on down here," he says. "It's really great. Everyone helps out everybody else."

According to Flo, an unanticipated aspect of his job is serving as "counselor or therapist" to his customers. He explains: "A lot of people tell me a lot of things, even in just the five seconds I'm in their place. In fact, you can't believe some of the things people tell me!" Alas, he declined to go into gossipy detail, which is no doubt the reason his customers trust him with their personal stories.

With all the responsibility of delivering heavy packages on time and listening to people's problems, it's no wonder Flo needs to cut loose at night. When he sheds his uniform and regulation boots, he steps into his dancin' duds, ready to "cut a rug." Committed to continuous refinement of his techniques, he takes dance classes every Monday. Then four or five nights a week he dances the Line, the Waltz, the Cha Cha, the Triple Step, the Country Two-Step, and the West Coast Swing. In a recent competition at Cowboys, he qualified to enter the national Country Classic Showcase, in Denver.

So now you know - when the band strikes up, Horacio Flores can deliver!

We've got answers

Puzzled no more

Created by artist Glenn Aguilar of Garden Gate Designs, the beautiful new stained glass window offers an alluring welcome to the Boulder Street Gallery at 206 N. Tejon Street. Gallery owner Terry Henderson originally located his business on Boulder Street (hence the name), then moved it to 725 N. Tejon in 1980. Henderson purchased his current space this year, and is also restoring the building's historic brick façade as well as installing new lighting and signage. A DDA Challenge Grant was matched to cover costs of the artistic window. Interestingly, 206 N. Tejon, which dates to 1900, still has the original sidewalk---in its lower level! That's how much the street has risen over the past century. For more information, contact Henderson at 636-9358.

Send us your news

But please send it early!

The Downtown Partnership e-newsletter is sent out on or near the 15th of each month. If you have news or events to publicize, please keep that date in mind and submit your materials by the first of the month. If your event falls on a date during the first two weeks of a month, you'll want to contact us by the first of the preceding month. For example, a September 10th event should be publicized in our August15th newsletter... so we'd need to have your information by August 1. Questions? Contact Terri at 886-0088.
