Keep it safe
CSPD: "Communicate with us!"
It would seem like a no-brainer: if you don't report suspicious or troubling behavior to the police, they can't help solve the problem.
According to Gold Hill Division Commander Kurt Pillard, police staffing for Downtown (and elsewhere) is based upon workload. Thus, if crimes or situations aren't reported, fewer staff will be assigned to cover the area. Ultimately, that could mean a slower response time when police presence is needed.
"People should not be concerned about 'bothering' us," Pillard says. "We want to encourage Downtown merchants and patrons to let us know what's going on, so we can respond appropriately."
All calls for service are prioritized for service, Pillard says. If the situation is dangerous or life threatening, call 9-1-1. Otherwise, report via phoning 444-7000 or sign up to email reports online at http://www.springsgov.com/Page.aspx?NavID=200 Note: be sure to read through CSPD's criteria for what incidents can be reported online! |
Upscale down-home cookin'
Slayton's brings BBQ to Downtown
Local restaurateur Randy Price has added a second downtown eatery to his professional resume - Slayton's Legendary Pit Barbecue at 28A South Tejon, next to his popular Sonterra Grill.
Slayton's Downtown is modeled after Slayton's in Rockrimmon - although the menu and the ambience are somewhat more trendy and upscale, Price says.
It's all the barbecue the traditionalist can relish: "traditional Kansas City-style barbecue, using only the highest quality cuts of meat and slow roasted at low temperatures for several hours in a traditional pit with hickory and apple woods." Favorites and signature dishes include baby back ribs, sliced brisket, pulled pork, prime rib, daily fresh fish, house-made salads and soups, and a full bar. Order sandwiches or platters, and choose from side dishes of hickory pit beans, cole slaw, potato salad, fries and onion rings, mac and cheese, fried okra, corn on the cob and other fresh vegetables.
Only at Slayton's could one also enjoy unique salads like the Waldorf twist - which includes smoked chicken, red grapes, apples, candied pecans, celery and blue cheese - and the Crunchy Chicken Salad - which marries shredded Napa cabbage, mixed field greens, smoked chicken breast, cucumber, carrots, edamame, fresh cilantro and red cabbage in a cilantro lime vinaigrette and peanut sauce!
All foods are prepared on site, from scratch.
As if owning five restaurants doesn't keep Price busy enough, he's also devoted to several community causes, including United Way and The Arc Foundation. The latter recently announced Price as its employer of the year.
Slayton's has a capacity of 70 seats, and guests can call ahead to be placed on the wait list: 471-2311. Friday and Saturday nights offer up live acoustic blues music and a full service bar. Hours are Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to close. Happy Hour is 3 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. |
