You've got sunshine
Art on the Street
sheds new light downtown

So you're in withdrawal now that that big ol' XO is gone. Well, the metaphorical hugs and kisses may have disappeared (along with the other 15 works of art in last year's show), but in their stead come 13 new works with fresh energy and interpretations of light - sunlight, that is - for the downtown landscape.

AOS logoThey're all part of the 10th Anniversary Art on the Streets exhibit, opening with an invitation-only reception this Friday, June 20, at the Pikes Peak Center. (If you want to attend, please just give us a call at 886-0088.) Star juror Adam Lerner (Executive Director of The Laboratory of Art and Ideas at Belmar in Lakewood, CO, www.belmarlab.org) will introduce all of the art selections and the top three winners of the $30,000 prize pool. All submitting artists were challenged to interpret the theme "City of Sunshine," which was an unofficial but widely used slogan for Colorado Springs in its first half-century.

The new exhibit features artists from Colorado, California and Wisconsin, and art that incorporates steel, glass, iron, limestone, ceramic tile, paint, solar panels, LED lights and a riot of recycled materials. Works range in size from 4 feet in diameter to 12' x 10' overall and in price from $4,500 to $120,000.  Yes, all pieces are for sale!

Also debuting alongside this year's exhibit is a 14th piece, sponsored by Nor'wood Development for the city's permanent downtown collection. Montana artist Patrick Zentz created "38, 104 Helios." It will be displayed at the northeast corner of Cascade and Kiowa.

Art on the Streets was founded by US Bank, is supported by Nor'wood Development and GE Johnson, and facilitated by the Downtown Partnership affiliate group, Community Ventures.  Nearly 100 additional patrons also contribute to the annual exhibit.  AOTS aspires to harness the power of art to energize a space, enhance its quality of life, facilitate curiosity and conversation, and influence economic growth.

A self-guided walking tour map with photographs and artist statements will be available online after June 20 at our web site.

Let us know your new faves or thumbs-down! Send a photo, and we may use it in an upcoming newsletter. Direct comments to deniseschall@downtowncs.com.

There's only one downtown!

If you're reading this, you're already in on the secret - there's really no place quite like downtown.  There's only one downtown. It's your epicenter for all the good things in life, from arts and cultural happenings to eclectic dining and shopping, premier business and hot new residential.

But for all those not so familiar - our suburban brethren, the wallet-wise visitors and tourists - that very message will be spreading like wildfire. Months of planning and creative effort have finally launched the largest, most comprehensive downtown marketing campaign ever.

"It's without doubt the very best campaign from the Marketing Committee to date," said Downtown Partnership Executive Director Beth Kosley. "It's clever, colorful and gets at the heart of what downtown offers. It will add some serious muscle to branding downtown."

You'll see the messaging streaming by on all seven new Downtown Area Shuttle (DASH) buses, popping up in a variety of print publications, splashed across billboards, and floating on banners above downtown sidewalks. You'll hear it airing on KRCC radio and see it come to life on your television screen.

The Greater Downtown Colorado Springs Business Improvement District funds the entire downtown marketing campaign.

Big wheels keep on turnin'
DASH through Downtown!

Just in time for two-way Tejon, seven new downtown shuttle buses - each a different bright hue - have arrived to make traversing the primary corridor easier and faster than ever. Dubbed DASH (for Downtown Area Shuttle), the 19-passenger vehicles are running more frequently and both north and south along Tejon Street between Cache le Poudre and the Park-and-RIde lot at I-25 and South Tejon.

DASH red with peopleThe free transportation is available from 6:15 a.m. to 7:55 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 6:15 a.m. to 12:55 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. During the busier shopping hours, 11 to 3, buses circulate every eight minutes. They'll pass every 15 minutes during the rest of the schedule.

The Greater Downtown Business Improvement District (BID) and Colorado College purchased five of the buses. Mountain Metro, the city's transit service, purchased the remaining two, and operates the system with funding from the Parking Enterprise Fund.

Finding the way
New Downtown Map goes the extra mile

It cost about one-sixth the price of its predecessor and will hopefully find its way into some 100,000 hands. It features no fancy folds or glossy surface. Instead, it's one of 50 single sheets bound to a simple 9 x 12-inch tear-off pad. The paper stock is matte so users can scribble notes on it if they want to. And it still has all the great info on it that people most want: a categorized directory of restaurants, shops and service businesses and their location on the downtown map!

A 50-count pad of the all-new cost-efficient, more user-friendly downtown map was recently distributed to every downtown business listed on the map, as well as to a variety of hotels and attractions. Copies will soon be delivered to office tower occupants as well.

Response from merchants was immediate and enthusiastic. Said Karen Lakes, curator at the McAllister House Museum, "I just received the pad of maps highlighting the downtown areas and I love it! In the past hour I have given away three to guests looking for a lunch recommendation and inquiring about the Numismatic Society Museum. Bravo! I am going to love handing them out."

According to Denise Schall at the Downtown Partnership, a limited number of the folded "old style" maps have been printed and distributed for use in brochure racks at select locations, too.

Have you given out any maps to your customers? We'd love your feedback on our new map approach! And thanks to the Marketing Committee and BID for conceiving this and implementing the new map format. Send comments to deniseschall@downtowncs.com.

Simply sensational

Sunday on the Town rocked!

The fourth annual Sunday on the Town fundraiser for the Colorado Springs Philharmonic and Downtown Partnership was a triple success. It gave the 1,000 people who attended the opportunity to hear up to 40 different musical ensembles and sample great cuisine, art and shopping as well as enter drawings for prizes and special discounts.  It gave merchants and performers fantastic exposure. And it netted the two beneficiaries nearly $10,000 each.

Issues with your tissues?

Have you noticed the glow? I see it every day, so I decided to investigate what was going on atop the stairs at 110 1/2 N. Tejon. The men and women who exit that building have a glow as if they've returned from a magical planet where aging is unknown and serenity is the only possible state of being.

When I asked one of the "transported" what the glow was all about, she replied, "YOPI."

Huh?

"Well," she explained, "YOPI is a way of maintaining oneself that is healthful to the body, mind, and spirit. It encompasses attitude, lifestyle, and tested protocols. YOPI is the very essence of Avarya."

Avarya?

"Avarya is a skin-and-body treatment center owned and operated by medical esthetician Rebecca Johnston. It offers non-invasive, internationally researched, FDA approved, high-end skin and body care for women and men of all ages."

What kinds of treatments?

"Oh, many kinds. One is the body toning, not to be confused with injury-inducing exercise. While you lie there and dream, the body machine works muscles that have been on vacation way too long."

What else?

"One of my favorites is the hand spa, not to be confused with 'manicure.' The hand machine targets age spots and dry skin."

But that glow!

"Ah, yes. Avarya's skin treatments involve procedures specific to each client's tissue issues. To the face and/or back, the esthetician applies techniques that cleanse, hydrate, minimize lines, and retard sagging. Also, she prescribes products that help you take proper care of your skin at home. With an appointment, you can even buy the products without the treatments."

Anything else?

"A rumor - something about a new kind of peel that results in baby-butt softness - a remedy to the "leather" wrought by Colorado wind and sun.

For more information and/or an appointment, call Avarya at 635-9600.  Hurry, though, before summer wreaks havoc on your skin and wearing a swimsuit is an act of total humiliation!
