DFCI Limited Applications

St. Baldrick's Foundation plans for a Letter of Intent deadline to occur early in January, for their 2012 spring funding program. The foundation expects their guidelines will be similar to 2011, without an sweeping changes to eligibility. DFCI Limited Application internal deadlines for the St. Baldrick's spring funding program will be announced mid October.  Please see last year's guidelines.

HMS 

HMS Foundation Funds 

Each year several foundations invite HMS faculty and postdocs to apply for their fellowships and grants, which serve as critical funding at the early stages of a research career. Interested investigators must first apply for the HMS nomination through the HMS Foundation Funds, and a committee will select the final candidates to submit applications to the foundations. Information on funding opportunities offered through the HMS Foundation Funds will
be available online beginning September 6.  Please see HMS Foundation Funds Limited Applications on the intranet for guidelines

HMS

William F. Milton Fund 

The Milton Fund supports studies of a medical, geographical, historical, or scientific nature, which must be either in the interests of promoting the physical and material welfare of the human race, or of investigating and determining the value and importance of a discovery or invention. Applicants must be members of the University with voting privileges in their respective faculties and must not have received Milton Fund support during the last five years.  Preference is given to new and original projects, especially independent work of recently-appointed young faculty members.

Amount: $40,000 for one year

HMS

Portugal Program in Translational Research and Information 

The Harvard Medical School - Portugal Program in Translational Research and Information announces its third call for applications for two- to three-year Collaborative Research Grants for Harvard-affiliated investigators working with scientists at Portuguese medical schools and biomedical research institutions. 

Amount: $160,000/year

Pancreatic Cancer Action Network 

AACR Research Grants Program 

Four grant mechanisms are offered. Funding is available for postdoctoral/clinical research fellows as well as for independent junior and senior researchers. The proposed research must be directly relevant to pancreatic cancer and can be basic, translational, clinical or epidemiological in nature.

Amount: varies by mechanism

Deadline: depending on mechanism, LOI due October 3, 2011 or full application due October 31, 2011 

 

American Cancer Society

Priority Focus in Cancer Control and Prevention Research Program: Health Disparities Research 

Sponsor is requesting applications in psychosocial and behavioral research and in health policy and health services (palliative care) research that address cancer health disparities. Within the Cancer Control and Prevention Research Program (one of five research programs in the EG department), meritorious applications focusing on disparity reduction will be funded prior to meritorious applications focusing on other areas in cancer control and prevention research. In order to qualify for the Priority Program, the application must explicitly demonstrate its relevance to cancer disparities and specify how the results of the proposed study can be used to reduce disparities.

The Role of Healthcare and Insurance in Improving Outcomes in Cancer Prevention, Early Detection, and Treatment 

The purpose of these awards is to stimulate research on the effects of the US healthcare system structure and the role of insurance on access to screenings and treatment. Of particular interest is research using linked databases such as SEER, Medicare payment data, State data and NCHS data or other existing databases.  Studies may be at the state, multi-state, or national levels, or otherwise involve large populations. 

Amount: $200,000/year for 4 years

Supports investigator-initiated projects across the cancer research continuum. Eligibility Criteria: Independent investigators in the first six years of an independent research career or faculty appointment are eligible to apply.

Clinical Research Professor 

The American Cancer Society offers a limited number of grants to mid-career investigators who have made seminal contributions in the area of cancer control that have changed the direction of clinical, psychosocial, behavioral, health policy or epidemiologic cancer research

Mentored Research Scholar Grant in Applied and Clinical Research 

The purpose of the Mentored Research Scholar Award is to support junior faculty members with a doctoral degree in a clinical or cancer control research discipline to acquire the research training, mentoring and experience necessary for transition into a successful career as an independent investigator. In addition to the research project itself; the activities during the award period must be designed to develop the necessary knowledge and skills in relevant areas through mentoring, and by enrolling in appropriate core curriculum courses and lectures.

Amount: $135,000/year for 5 years

American Cancer Society 

Pilot and Exploratory Projects in Palliative Care of Cancer Patients and their Families 

This RFA provides funding for investigators performing pilot and exploratory research studies whose purpose is to test interventions, develop research methodologies, and explore novel areas of research in palliative care of cancer patients and their families. A condition of funding is a clearly defined plan as to how the investigator will use the results of the project to develop larger, extramurally funded research projects.

Amount: $60,000 per year

American Cancer Society  

Cancer Control Career Development Awards for Primary Care Physicians 

This award is made to support primary care physicians with a rank of instructor to assistant professor who are pursuing an academic career with an emphasis on cancer control. Support is for primary care physicians in supervised programs intended to develop clinical and teaching expertise and the capacity to perform independent research or educational innovation in cancer control.

Amount: $100,000/year for 3 years

Association for International Cancer Research

Research Grants 

AICR awards grants to support fundamental or translational research into the causes, mechanisms, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancer. The sponsor does not support clinical research. The sponsor will consider applications that include some clinical research in a project which is mostly basic or translational. However, completely clinical applications, such as intervention studies, clinical trials or health care delivery research are beyond the remit of AICR.  Amount: £200,000 over 3 years

Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

The Marshall A. Lichtman Specialized Center of Research Program (SCOR) 

This innovative program supports interdisciplinary research across at least three independent research projects that are integrated and supported by scientific core laboratories.

Amount: $6.25 million over 5 years

Friends For An Earlier Breast Cancer Test

Grants Program 

The sponsor provides funding for pilot projects that focus on new methods to improve detection of early breast cancer and are especially interested in the development of new techniques in the areas of biological or immunologic methods of early detection.

Amount: $40,000 over 1-3 years

Kimmel (Sidney) Foundation for Cancer Research

Kimmel Scholar Award 

The goal of the program is to improve the basic understanding of cancer biology and the development of new methods for the prevention and treatment of cancer. While the majority of applications involve basic research, scientists whose work focuses on epidemiology, cancer prevention, radiation biology, pharmacology, and other clinical studies will be equally judged based on merit.   

Amount: $100,000/year for 2 years

These grants are designed to provide critical and significant seed funding for experienced investigators with a novel and promising approach to finding causes and cures for childhood cancers.

These grants are designed as start-up funds for new scientists at the end of their fellowship training or early in their research career. Demonstration of outstanding mentorship and demonstration of a career plan that shows commitment to pediatric cancer investigation are critical components of a successful application.

Alex's Lemonade Stand

Epidemiology Awards 

These grants are designed to support the research of investigators who have a specific focus on the epidemiology, early detection, or the prevention of childhood cancer. ALSF will award support to established investigators who have a track record of peer-reviewed publications in relevant areas. These awards are expected to provide additional funds that will allow investigators to pursue novel and promising approaches to understanding the cause of childhood cancers and how such insight can be used for early detection or prevention of childhood cancer.

Amount: $100,000/year over 2 years

Deadline: December 15, 2011 

 

The Lustgarten Foundation: Cure Pancreatic Cancer Now 

Correlative Studies Awards Program 

The Lustgarten Foundation will fund selected correlative science proposals directly linked to a CTEP sponsored clinical trial of novel therapeutics for pancreatic cancer. These correlative studies will utilize the principles routinely applied to clinical diagnostic tests, including the use of appropriate pharmacodynamic (PD) endpoints, to develop assays that will provide robust and accurate measurements of drug effects in patient specimens.  Any investigator eligible to receive support from CTEP and proposing to conduct CTEP-sponsored clinical trial of a novel therapy for pancreatic cancer will be eligible to apply for funding from Lustgarten for support of correlative studies related to the trial.

Amount: Unspecified
