Internal Funding
DFCI, DF/HCC, BWH, and Harvard

DF/HCC

MIT-DF/HCC Bridge Project

The MIT-DF/HCC Bridge Project is designed to help bring the expertise of these two institutions to bear on translational problems in cancer research.  Particular emphasis is placed on fostering joint approaches by engineers and cancer scientists. Launched in 2009, the Bridge Project has supported six teams thus far. The current Bridge Project focus areas are pancreatic and brain cancers, and applications working at the interface of engineering, physical sciences, and translational medicine will be advantaged.
Amount: up to $500,000 to cross-institutional teams for up to 2 years

Deadline: October 1, 2011

Non-Federal Funding - Grants

Susan G. Komen

Investigator-Initiated Research (IIR)

IIR Grants seek to stimulate exploration of new ideas and novel approaches in breast cancer research and clinical practice that have the potential to lead to reductions in breast cancer incidence and mortality within the next decade.  Amount: $250,000/year for up to 4 years

Deadline: LOI due August 10, 2011

Hirshberg Foundation

Seed Grants Program

The sponsor aims to: provide start-up funding for basic scientists and clinicians who intend to test innovative ideas for improving the diagnosis and current therapies and to develop new treatment modalities for pancreatic cancer; obtain preliminary data required for additional funding from other agencies for pancreatic cancer research; impact on the understanding of pancreatic cancer cell biology, biochemistry, physiology, morphology, and response to therapy; and establish collaborations within the field for mutual projects that can be considered for further funding.

Amount: One year for $40,000, can be renewed

Deadline: August 15, 2011

Jeff Gordon Children's Foundation

Promise Circle Grant

Applicant's must focus on pediatric cancer through patient assistance programs. Funding is provided to programs that help patients and family members cope with diagnosis, treatment and the emotional challenges they face, financial assistance programs to serve the underinsured and survivorship programs that address the needs of children in remission. Programs must be based in the United States.

Amount: Varies

Deadline: August 15, 2011

Uniting Against Lung Cancer

Legacy Program for Advances in Lung Cancer Research

In 2011, this foundation is prioritizing innovative, high risk/high reward research. They aim to jumpstart new projects

leading to improved treatments and a cure for lung cancer, including non-small cell and small cell lung cancer.

Proposals do not require large amounts of preliminary data, but must have a clear hypothesis and research plan  to be completed within the two year grant term. This funding is intended primarily as seed money for promising and potentially transformative new projects, rather than funding well-developed clinical projects that already receive considerable support. However, high risk/high reward add-on studies leveraging larger ongoing projects, or pre-existing data-sets, clinical samples, etc. are of interest. Investigators at all levels will be funded through the Legacy Program and are encouraged to apply.

Amount: $100,000 over 2 years

Deadline: August 17, 2011

Susan G. Komen

Career Catalyst Research (CCR)

CCR Grants provide unique opportunities for scientists in the early stages of their careers to achieve research independence. Areas of research include basic, translational/clinical, and disparities in breast cancer outcomes across population groups.

Amount: $150,000 per year for up to 3 years

Deadline: LOI due August 30, 2011

Foundation for Digestive Health and Nutrition

Funderburg Research Scholar Award in Gastric Cancer

The sponsor supports the research of investigators working on novel approaches in the gastric cancer, including the fields of gastric mucosal cell biology; regeneration and regulation of cell growth (not as they relate to peptic ulcer disease or repair); inflammation (including Helicobacter pylori) as precancerous lesions; genetics of gastric carcinoma; oncogenes in gastric epithelial malignancies; epidemiology of gastric cancer; etiology of gastric epithelial malignancies; or clinical research in the diagnosis or treatment of gastric carcinoma.

Amount: $50,000 per year for 2 years

Deadline: September 2, 2011

The Lustgarten Foundation: Cure Pancreatic Cancer Now

Basic Research Innovator Awards

The Lustgarten Foundation is announcing its "Innovator Awards Program" to fund proposals aimed at supporting novel, "out of the box" research proposals in the area of translational research (bringing the findings of the basic sciences to bear on practical, clinical applications for patients).  The Foundation has a particular interest in grants addressing early detection and novel therapeutics but will accept all areas of translational study.

Amount: $100,000 for one year

Deadline: Concept Proposal due September 12, 2011

Prevent Cancer Foundation

Research Grants

The sponsor aims to prevent cancer through scientific research and education, as well as early detection. Grant proposals will be considered in the following categories: basic, clinical, translational, and applied research projects; education programs in cancer prevention; early detection projects; and behavioral intervention projects. Examples of acceptable proposals are: research projects which, if successful, may lead directly to reducing the incidence of cancer; primary and secondary prevention research on all types of cancers; and creative or innovative approaches to cancer prevention research.

Amount: $40,000/year for 2 years

Deadline: September 14, 2011

American Skin Association

Research Scholar Award for Melanoma/Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer

The applicant must have a strong career goal within the field of dermatology and be dedicated to the furtherance of

The Lustgarten Foundation: Cure Pancreatic Cancer Now

Correlative Studies Awards Program

The Lustgarten Foundation will fund selected correlative science proposals directly linked to a CTEP sponsored clinical trial of novel therapeutics for pancreatic cancer. These correlative studies will utilize the principles routinely applied to clinical diagnostic tests, including the use of appropriate pharmacodynamic (PD) endpoints, to develop assays that will provide robust and accurate measurements of drug effects in patient specimens.  Any investigator eligible to receive support from CTEP and proposing to conduct CTEP-sponsored clinical trial of a novel therapy for pancreatic cancer will be eligible to apply for funding from Lustgarten for support of correlative studies related to the trial.

Amount: Unspecified

Deadline: Applications are accepted on a rolling schedule
