Gloria Spivak Faculty Advancement Fund

Provides funding to facilitate the ongoing research of Dana-Farber faculty members who are at pivotal junctures in their career development and work-life balance.  Faculty members eligible for funding are those experiencing a challenge in their work/life balance, which may be immediate or ongoing. An applicant should describe how the award would assist him/her in getting through this challenge. The award is not intended as bridge funding. Examples of appropriate use of award funds include hiring of technicians, research assistants, post-doctoral fellows, or administrative support.

Amount: $25,000-75,000 for 1-2 years

Non-Federal Funding - Grants

The Doctors Cancer Foundation

Nolan Miller Grant  - lung cancer only 

Awarded to the best program for management of lung cancer. There is a strong interest in cancer stem cells, microRNAi agents, epigenetic agents, as well as many others. The foundation is particularly interested in promoting the best of the young scientists, currently under the radar screen. Foundation is not looking at studies that show that drug A is 3% better than drug B.  The project should be innovative, sound, and be able to lead to clinical trials.
Amount: $50,000

Society of Surgical Oncology

Clinical Investigator Award in Breast Cancer Research 

The applicant will play a central role in the conduct of a specific breast cancer research project. This might include a leadership role in a clinical trial involving prevention, diagnosis, or therapy; cancer outcomes research; survivorship research; or a translational research project related to a prospective clinical trial. The clinical research focus must be hypothesis-driven and must have a direct patient-oriented focus.
Amount: $100,000 over two years

New York Stem Cell Foundation

Early Career Investigator Awards 

The New York Stem Cell Foundation requests applications from early career investigators in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom to cultivate research that will explore the therapeutic potential of human stem cells. The program is designed to support scientists in the next phase of their career after postdoctoral work.

Amount: $1.5 million over 5 years

Lung Cancer Research Foundation

Research Grants 

Grants are awarded for lung cancer projects focused on: basic science, translational research, clinical research, supportive care, and quality of care/outcomes.

Breast Cancer Alliance

Young Investigator Grants 

The Breast Cancer Alliance invites clinical doctors and research scientists whose primary focus is breast cancer who have been appointed to a position equivalent to Assistant Professor within three years following the appointment, to apply for funding for the Young Investigator Grant. This grant is open to applicants at institutions within a 200 miles radius of Greenwich, Connecticut (an area that includes cities such as Boston, Philadelphia, New York City, Hartford, and Albany).

Amount: $125,000 over 2 years

American Cancer Society

Clinical Research Professor Awards 

Awarded to mid-career investigators who have made seminal contributions in the area of cancer control that have changed the direction of clinical, psychosocial, behavioral, health policy or epidemiologic cancer research. It is expected that these investigators will continue to provide leadership in their research area.
Amount: $80,000 per year for 5 years

Alex's Lemonade Stand

Independent Nurse Researcher Grant 

Applications are expected to be from experienced investigators to investigate topics and issues related to the quality of nursing care and the quality of life for children with cancer. Demonstration of a career that shows commitment to pediatric cancer nursing is a critical component of a successful application

Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation

Grant Program 

To continue to stimulate research for the treatment of malignant mesothelioma, the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation announces its 2011 round of research grants. The Meso Foundation will award grants for innovative mesothelioma benchwork, translational or clinical research. 

Amount: $100,000 over two years

Hirshberg Foundation 
Seed Grants Program 

The sponsor aims to: provide start-up funding for basic scientists and clinicians who intend to test innovative ideas for improving the diagnosis and current therapies and to develop new treatment modalities for pancreatic cancer; obtain preliminary data required for additional funding from other agencies for pancreatic cancer research; impact on the understanding of pancreatic cancer cell biology, biochemistry, physiology, morphology, and response to therapy; and establish collaborations within the field for mutual projects that can be considered for further funding.

Amount: One year for $40,000, can be renewed

Jeff Gordon Children's Foundation

Promise Circle Grant 

Applicant's must focus on pediatric cancer through patient assistance programs. Funding is provided to programs that help patients and family members cope with diagnosis, treatment and the emotional challenges they face, financial assistance programs to serve the underinsured and survivorship programs that address the needs of children in remission. Programs must be based in the United States.

Uniting Against Lung Cancer

Legacy Program for Advances in Lung Cancer Research 

In 2011, this foundation is prioritizing innovative, high risk/high reward research. They aim to jumpstart new projects
leading to improved treatments and a cure for lung cancer, including non-small cell and small cell lung cancer.
Proposals do not require large amounts of preliminary data, but must have a clear hypothesis and research plan
to be completed within the two year grant term. This funding is intended primarily as seed money for promising
and potentially transformative new projects, rather than funding well-developed clinical projects that already
receive considerable support. However, high risk/high reward add-on studies leveraging larger ongoing projects,
or pre-existing data-sets, clinical samples, etc. are of interest. Investigators at all levels will be funded through the
Legacy Program and are encouraged to apply.
Amount: $100,000 over 2 years
Deadline: August 17, 2011

Foundation for Digestive Health and Nutrition

Funderburg Research Scholar Award in Gastric Cancer 

The sponsor supports the research of investigators working on novel approaches in the gastric cancer, including the fields of gastric mucosal cell biology; regeneration and regulation of cell growth (not as they relate to peptic ulcer disease or repair); inflammation (including Helicobacter pylori) as precancerous lesions; genetics of gastric carcinoma; oncogenes in gastric epithelial malignancies; epidemiology of gastric cancer; etiology of gastric epithelial malignancies; or clinical research in the diagnosis or treatment of gastric carcinoma.

Amount: $50,000 per year for 2 years

The Lustgarten Foundation: Cure Pancreatic Cancer Now

Basic Research Innovator Awards 

The Lustgarten Foundation is announcing its "Innovator Awards Program" to fund proposals aimed at supporting novel, "out of the box" research proposals in the area of translational research (bringing the findings of the basic sciences to bear on practical, clinical applications for patients).  The Foundation has a particular interest in grants addressing early detection and novel therapeutics but will accept all areas of translational study.  

Amount: $100,000 for one year
Deadline: September 12, 2011

American Skin Association

Research Scholar Award for Melanoma/Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer 

The applicant must have a strong career goal within the field of dermatology and be dedicated to the furtherance of
knowledge concerning melanoma/non-melanoma skin cancer. The research must be focused on new discoveries in the basic and clinical sciences, which should have current or potential impact on the understanding and treatment of melanoma/non-melanoma skin cancer.
Amount: $60,000 for one year
Deadline: September 15, 2011

The Lustgarten Foundation: Cure Pancreatic Cancer Now

Correlative Studies Awards Program 

The Lustgarten Foundation will fund selected correlative science proposals directly linked to a CTEP sponsored clinical trial of novel therapeutics for pancreatic cancer. These correlative studies will utilize the principles routinely applied to clinical diagnostic tests, including the use of appropriate pharmacodynamic (PD) endpoints, to develop assays that will provide robust and accurate measurements of drug effects in patient specimens.  Any investigator eligible to receive support from CTEP and proposing to conduct CTEP-sponsored clinical trial of a novel therapy for pancreatic cancer will be eligible to apply for funding from Lustgarten for support of correlative studies related to the trial.
