Shaping Lives of PurposeJoin Us in Supporting Geneseo's Capital Campaign
A message from Josh and Belle Horowitz P'12, Parents Council Philanthropy Chairs

Shaping Lives of Purpose:  The Campaign for Geneseo, continues to move forward with great momentum.  As President Christopher C. Dahl stated in his annual address to parents last fall, this is the most ambitious fundraising effort in the history of the College. This multi-year campaign will raise $22-25 million to support the students and faculty at Geneseo in the areas of scholarship, academic innovation and faculty support; global education, athletics, and The Center for Inquiry, Discovery and Leadership. It is exciting and reassuring to know that Geneseo is raising money each and every day to benefit current students--OUR very own children.

Throughout the country, alumni and parents have gathered for special launch events for Shaping Lives of Purpose in cities such as New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Buffalo, Rochester, Los Angeles, Tampa, and Washington, D.C.  This spring, the College will hold events in Westchester and on Long Island. With gifts and pledges from parents and alumni, the Campaign has raised over $18.5 million, nearing the $22 million goal.

Your support is greatly needed to achieve the College's goal, and to ensure that our students and future students have access to research and leadership opportunities, global studies, athletics and more.  If you haven't made your gift to the Campaign, please do so today at giveto.geneseo.edu

Geneseo Named to Princeton Review's List Of 75
'Best Value' Public Colleges for 2012

The Princeton Review has named the State University of New York at Geneseo one of the nation's top 75 "Best Value" public colleges and universities. The education service company has joined USA TODAY in releasing results of the report, "The Best Value Colleges: 2012 Edition." Geneseo has consistently been included on the list.

The list, which features 150 schools total - 75 public and 75 private college and universities - is posted on the websites of The Princeton Review and USA TODAY. Read more

Center for Inquiry, Leadership and Discovery to Name First Ambassadors

Provost Carol Long has announced that the formal launch of the Center for Inquiry, Discovery and Leadership will occur this fall with the naming of its external Advisory Board. The Center was established through generous gifts from donors to the Shaping Lives of Purpose CampaignIt seeks to provide opportunities for dynamic learning experiences that expand world perspectives and build upon Geneseo's strong liberal arts foundation. Purpose, curiosity and possibility characterize the Center's program, which encourages students to expand their boundaries, pursue ideas of consequence, and engage and enhance their communities.

Thanks to our donors, Geneseo is able to inaugurate the centerpiece of this endeavor, the Student Ambassador Program, this spring. Student Ambassadorships are $5,000 awards that support a student-designed project in leadership, innovation, or community engagement.

An Ambassador project is not undertaken for academic credit, but it may grow out of a student's academic interests. The project should engage a student in something that intrigues him or her; it should take the student into new territory. It should enhance one's capacity for imaginative inquiry, independent discovery, and humane leadership. Student Ambassadors will be selected in the following areas the summer of 2012:
  • The Frank Vafier Ambassador in Leadership
  • The James Houston Ambassador in Innovation
  • The James N. Leary Ambassador in Leadership
  • The Community Advocates Ambassador in Community Engagement (must be undertaken in Livingston County, NY)
  • The Gerard Gouvernet Ambassador in French Language and Culture

The Gouvernet Ambassador application will begin in the Department of Languages and Literatures; interested students should contact Professor Rose McEwen for application guidelines.  Applicants for other Ambassadorships should use the guidelines which are available on the Provost's website.  For questions or further information students should contact Provost Long (long@geneseo.edu) or her assistant Jennifer Glieco (glieco@geneseo.edu).

Community Service Programs Receive National Recognition

The State University of New York at Geneseo has been named to President Obama's 2012 Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction, a national recognition of a college or university for bettering their communities through community service and service-learning.

The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), which administers the annual Honor Roll Awards, and the U.S. Department of Education recognized 642 colleges and universities for their impact on issues from literacy and neighborhood revitalization to supporting at-risk youth. Geneseo is among 114 colleges across the nation named this year to the Honor Roll with Distinction --three are SUNY schools -- and it's the third year that Geneseo has received the distinction designation. The College has been on the honor roll every year since the program was launched in 2006. Read more

Parents Make a Difference at Geneseo

A message from John and Kathy Weinmann, Parents Council Co-chairs

John and Kathleen WeinmannThe Geneseo Parent's Council offers a great way for you to stay connected to your student, Geneseo and other parents while your child is studying at the College. At the same time, you benefit current students by offering your guidance in areas of admissions, fundraising, special events and matters of importance to your student. Whether you host an event in your home, help a student through mentoring or internship opportunities, or come to campus to share your work experiences with students, as a member of the Parents Council, you can make a difference.

This summer, we will be holding first-year parent and student welcome receptions in Long Island, Brooklyn and Rochester. If you live in Buffalo, Albany or Syracuse and can host up to 50 people, please consider hosting a reception in your home.  We also are looking for parents to participate in the orientation panels for new parents.  The panels will be held on five evenings in July during new student orientation. Remember all those first-year questions you had?  By participating in the panel you can help new Geneseo parents navigate the process of sending their students to Geneseo for the first time.

Members of the Parents Council, along with all of Geneseo's parents, are also invited to make Geneseo a philanthropic priority.   Our annual and recurring gifts directly benefit our students and aid them in reaching their goals.  Thank you to every parent who has made a gift this year.  If you haven't, please be generous in your support of the College and our students by making a gift to the Parents Fund today.

If you would like to join the Parents Council and assist Geneseo in the areas of admissions, advocacy, internships/mentoring, and fundraising, please call Tammy Ingram, Director of Parent Relations, at (585) 245-5570 and she will help you get involved.

COPLAC Grant Focuses on Distance Mentoring for Undergraduate Research

coplacSUNY Geneseo's flourishing undergraduate research programs could benefit from a Teagle Foundation grant awarded recently to the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC).

Geneseo is one of 11 COPLAC member institutions involved in the design and implementation of a two-year pilot project funded through the $150,000 grant to explore how faculty members can share their expertise across COPLAC institutions via distance mentoring of undergraduate researchers. Distance mentoring is academic guidance and collaboration arranged primarily through electronic tools such as email, online meeting software, and more.

"A strong distance-mentoring program through COPLAC could leverage the academic strength of the entire consortium to offer our students a range of faculty expertise more commonly associated with a large research university," said Geneseo Provost Carol Long. "Among other things, the project will compare such mentoring with traditional face-to-face mentoring and examine the technical challenges and costs involved. We're pleased to be involved with the project and look forward to the results." Read more
