President Dahl Seeks Support of Parents For Pivotal Higher Education Legislation |
To SUNY Geneseo Parents: For many years Geneseo has advocated for more control and greater flexibility in achieving its full potential as a public liberal arts college. I'm pleased to inform you that legislation proposed by the governor in his 2010-11 executive budget offers almost everything we have been requesting. We need your help now in advocating for this legislation, the Public Higher Education Empowerment and Innovation Act. This act will help unshackle SUNY from years of overregulation, giving us the flexibility to manage our own operations outside of cumbersome political constraints while maintaining appropriate accountability and state oversight. Among many other benefits, the reforms would provide Geneseo with:
*Control of how tuition dollars are spent *Countless efficiencies through a more flexible procurement system *Ability to implement public/private partnerships to benefit Geneseo's students and New York state These benefits will enable Geneseo to enhance its programs for all students and to achieve more fully our potential to be the premier public liberal arts college in the country. This achievement will benefit the entire state. We need distinguished public undergraduate liberal arts colleges for the kind of educational development and civic engagement required in the 21st century. Geneseo already has taken frightening budget cuts in the past year, leaving us with a $3.2 million shortfall in our 2010-11 budget. Those numbers bring into sharp focus the kind of flexibility we need to maintain and enhance educational excellence for our students and fulfill our commitment to the citizens of New York. That's why this legislation is pivotal. It represents the seismic change SUNY needs in order to excel. Please contact your legislators this week and urge them to support the Public Higher Education Empowerment and Innovation Act. I encourage you to sign up at SUNY Advocates, which provides more information on the legislation and how you can take action. Please consider taking at least one action step today. Your support is vitally important to the future of Geneseo. Thank you.

Parent Involvement Benefits Students
|
This semester I have met with several parents and I am so pleased with their willingness to get involved with Geneseo. Many parents have agreed to help with internships and host events in their communities, while others have agreed to come to campus to speak with our students about topics related to specific professions, tips for interviewing for jobs and graduate school, and leadership development. A well rounded Geneseo education becomes even more vibrant when parents and alumni lend their expertise to the development process.
In October, we had our most successful Parents Council meeting yet. Thirty -five parents enjoyed presentations by Andrew Tisser '10, Laura Best '10 and Bridget Denicola '11. Each student is engaged in on-campus activities that are supported by gifts to the Parents Fund. Meet Andrew, Laura, and Bridget at geneseo.edu/makeadifference.
The Council is also engaged in raising funds to support many student initiatives. Gifts to the Parents Fund directly support research, athletics, leadership development, scholarships and other campus activities that students like Andrew, Laura and Bridget are active in. The Parents Council has demonstrated leadership through their generous support of the Parents Fund this year, and are grateful that so many parents followed suit in making Geneseo a philanthropic priority this past fall.
As we enter our spring Parent Fund campaign, please consider support of the Roundtable Athletic Association, your student's department or the library fund. Every dollar that is raised this semester will benefit students in 2010.
If you made a gift to the Parents Fund this past fall thank you! If you have an outstanding pledge, or would like to make a gift today, please visit http://giveto.geneseo.edu.
Thank you for your support!

| President Dahl Joins Students on
Hurricane Relief Trip |
Geneseo President Christopher C. Dahl joined Livingston County CARES recently for the group's 16th trip to the Biloxi, Miss., area to repair homes damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. It was the president's first work trip with the organization, a non-profit group of Geneseo students and community members dedicated to local and global humanitarian projects.
After Hurricane Katrina, the Livingston County Board of Supervisors established a relationship with its counterpart in Harrison County, Mississippi, to assist with relief and recovery efforts. SUNY Geneseo organized Livingston County CARES through its Center for Community, which emphasizes the vital link between service and leadership.
"It's very important for students to recognize and understand that active volunteerism and service are vital components for students to become effective leaders," said Tom Matthews, director of leadership education, development and training at SUNY Geneseo. "Students who go on these work trips quickly realize they are making a positive impact on people's lives."
President Dahl spent several days working on damaged houses and praised the group's commitment. "It was impressive seeing students working beside community members," said President Dahl. "Everyone realized they were there to do the serious work of helping people recover and that attitude was highly gratifying. They realize their work is not just a one-time, in-and-out effort. This group is dedicated to returning to this area until the work is done," he said.

| Kiplinger's Gives Geneseo High Marks |
Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine has again ranked Geneseo among the top 10 best values in public four-year colleges. This year's list is available online and in the February issue of Kiplinger's. Geneseo placed 9th for in-state and 2nd for out-of-state students among the top 100 schools; click here to read the news release.
Year after year, Geneseo receives high marks from national publications, validating our mission to provide a superb liberal arts education at a reasonable cost. Despite these difficult economic times, Geneseo continues to offer an educational experience that rivals that of many private institutions. Although you have experienced the Geneseo difference first-hand, rankings such as Kiplinger's give us furthur reason to be proud of this great college and its legacy of excellence. | |
