Geneseo Young Alumni Honored in Rochester

The Rochester Business Journal has chosen three Geneseo alumni as 2009 Forty Under 40 honorees.

Drew Bielemeier '93 is vice president of operations for Heritage Christian Services Inc. Tom Tehan '00 serves as AERS senior manager at Deloitte & Touche LLP; and James Traylor '07 is the director of the Special Care Program at Financial Architects. Forty Under 40 recipients are nominated by the community and selected by a committee of business leaders. Recipients of the award are recognized for their professional success and significant civic contributions in the community.

Geneseo Celebrates the Sciences

Dick HathewayMore than 1,000 Geneseo students study the sciences at Geneseo, exploring research and theory that may treat diseases and improve our understanding of the world around us.

On October 16-17, students, faculty members and alumni recognized Geneseo's strong tradition of scientific pursuit at the first Celebrating the Sciences event which featured alumni panels, an alumni and faculty reception, faculty presentations and more.

Anthony Wiederkehr '87 was among more than a dozen physics, biology and geological sciences alumni who returned to campus to speak with students and provide insight about careers. Wiederkehr is president and founder of AeroMech Inc. in Washington state. The company provides certification and engineering services to aircraft manufacturers, airlines, operators, modification shops and military customers around the world.

Robert Rose '84, a virologist, also participated in the biology panel. He and his colleagues in the Infectious Diseases Division of the University of Rochester Medical Center developed a successful vaccine against cervical cancer.

The physics, geological sciences and biology panels were attended by hundreds of students and alumni.

"I think it is great to give our students a chance to hear from some of our successful alumni," says Professor Kurt Fletcher, chair of the physics department. "The Distinguished Alumni Panels provide an opportunity for our majors to look beyond the immediate concerns of the next assignment or the next lab report and think about their long-term dreams and goals."

Other panel members have found success in diverse careers and included professors, company presidents and founders, hydrologists, soil scientists, anesthesiologists, marketing directors and doctors.

Celebrating the Sciences kicked off with tours of the $53 million Integrated Science Center (ISC) and a snake handling presentation by alumnus Tom Hudek '83 of Scales and Tails. On Saturday, there was an All Sciences Celebration in the ISC lobby where professor emeritus and Geneseo mayor, Dick Hatheway, discussed the importance and impact of the science departments at the college.

Newest Sports Hall of Fame Inductees Honored

Four alumni were inducted into the college's Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday, Sept. 26, during Homecoming weekend.

The college also recognized Art Hatton, former vice president of college advancement and former president of the Geneseo Foundation, in the "Legends of the Blue Knights" category. Hatton had a profound impact on the Geneseo athletics program with the creation of the Blue Knights Roundtable Booster club in 1978, which is now the Roundtable Athletic Association. An avid squash player, Hatton remains an advocate, fan and supporter of Geneseo athletics.

The ceremony also included recognition of the 1998 and 2001 SUNYAC champion women's tennis teams.

The four alumni inducted into the Hall of Fame are:

BatchelderGena Tallarini Batchelder '02 is the first women's tennis player to grace the Sports Hall of Fame. She is a two-time SUNYAC singles champion and 1998 SUNYAC second doubles champion, who led Geneseo to a record of 34-14 and two SUNYAC team titles during her four seasons.

George O'Brien '87 is a two-time All-SUNYAC performer as a striker in men's soccer. His 36 career goals remain third all-time at Geneseo.

EdwardsJill Almansberger Edwards '02 helped Geneseo to a record of 124-45 in her four seasons as an outfielder for the women's softball team. She was a two-time All-Northeast Region selection and two-time first team All-SUNYAC choice. She graduated with three school records: games played (168); at-bats (513); and runs scored (137). Her 180 hits stand second all-time to Hall of Famer Hilary Gangemi's 211. She aided the Knights to the ECAC Northeast Division III championship in 2000 and the SUNYAC championship and NCAA Division III tournament in 2002.

LorenzJennifer Turkovich Lorenz '01 was a four-year midfielder for the women's lacrosse team and is the first player to represent her sport in the Geneseo Sports Hall of Fame. A Historic Gift to the College

Bud VanArsdale and President DahlPresident Christopher C. Dahl says the $2.5 million gift that former Bank of Castile President Charles L. "Bud" VanArsdale has committed to Geneseo is "a historic action that will forever alter the college."

The president announced the gift at a Geneseo Foundation recognition event. The largest gift ever made to Geneseo will fund the Charles L. "Bud" VanArsdale Endowed Chair for Entrepreneurship and Small Business in the School of Business, the first professorship in the college's 138-year history. Geneseo becomes one of only two SUNY four-year colleges with an endowed chair at this level.

"Bud, your commitment to Geneseo is not only monetary," Dahl said at the event. "Your thoughtful generosity sends a message to the Geneseo community and the public at large that Geneseo is an institution deserving of such trust and benevolence, that this college is a good steward of such philanthropy and will utilize this gift to transform the manner in which young people seek out tomorrow's solutions for today's challenges."

VanArsdale was humbled by the recognition and during his brief remarks thanked those at the gathering for the opportunity to help the college. In an earlier interview, VanArsdale called the gift an investment in students and the region.

The gift to Geneseo is the latest in a long history of support by VanArsdale and his late wife, Marjorie. The Charles and Marjorie VanArsdale Scholarship for International Studies helps international students study at Geneseo. VanArsdale served as director of SUNY Geneseo's Small Business Development Center for several years after his tenure as president of the Bank of Castile. In 2008, the college awarded him an honorary doctorate of humane letters degree for his life's work in service to others.

"Bud's gift is a benchmark for Geneseo in affirming the quality education students are receiving at the college," said Jack Kramer '76, chair of The Geneseo Foundation Board. "His commitment strongly validates Geneseo's stature as a nationally recognized liberal arts college. He has the heartfelt thanks of all members of our board."

Main Street Bear Sighted in Madrid!

I passed this statue of a bear in Madrid, Spain while traveling over Easter vacation last year. I just had to have my picture taken by it. It reminded me so much of the Geneseo bear!
