Fall Pond Care from Backyard Concepts
Greetings!

For great results in the spring it is vitally important to make a few minor adjustments to the water garden in the fall.

There are a few important water gardening house keeping chores come up this time of year.

1. Algae Bloom happens this time of year. Barley is one of the best preventatives. Available in barley bales, pellets or extract. Get it in the water NOW. It will help keep the algae at bay. more pond info

2. As the fall leaves drop to the bottom of your pond your water quality will begin to suffer. Pond Nets are available specifically for this purpose. Leaf drop will discolor your pond so if you don't have a pond net be sure to add Activated Carbon. more pond info

3. You should be adding bacteria on a regular basis. Now is the time to switch
to Cold Water Bacteria. It is formulated to work better in cold water.

4. Once the water temperature drops below 55 degrees koi and goldfish will stop eating. Switching to a lower protein fish food will help lead to cleaner, clearer water and more colorful fish.

5. Aquatic Plants. As the leaves begin to brown and drop trim them about 1" above the water line. Tender perennial aquatics must be brought in before the first freeze.

6. If you have a tropical or night blooming Lily they are simply 'stunning' right now. In contrast, the Hardy lilies are slowing down their bloom cycle with more yellow leaves and fewer blooms. Winter over your Tropical Lily by bringing it in before the first freeze. more aquatic plant info

Floating Island

Islandscapes is a great idea. Plant in the special soil provided and float your marginals in the middle of the pond. Great idea for those without a lot of shelf space. You can plant aquatic plants or regular landscaping material - even grass! Never needs watering.

Review: Definitely a two person install.  Needs at least 8x11 pond. However, they have just come out with their new sizes for 2008 so hopefully they will be a bit smaller.

Pond Scissors
lily clippers
Oh yeah. This handy little gem is Sheila's new favorite toy. This has a 4' handle with trigger that can reach those lily pads without going wading. Just reach out and snip it off and it holds the snipped part so you can easily lift it out of the pond.

AquaNet
pond net
This pond net is a must if you are in area that has lots of trees. When the leaves drop and fall to the bottom of the pond your water turns an ugly dark tea color. This makes a huge mess and a nasty spring clean out.

Review:  Easy to install. Pond nets come with landscape spikes that hold the net in place. I only leave mine on during the first part of the fall and it helps tremendously. I leave a little space to feed the fish but for the most part it is a great investment.
