Hospitality Noted

Recently Margaret Irwin and I attended a workshop to prepare for the Wisconsin Council of Churches "Season of Civility" program.  Seated at tables of 8, with representatives from many congregations, we began with introductions.  In the subsequent conversation, 2 members of a UCC church were quick to tell us how much they had appreciated the hospitality that Grace offered during days of demonstration last winter on the square.

I want to pass this on to all of the volunteers who spent time keeping our doors open last winter.  Your efforts were noticed, appreciated and remembered.

- Deacon Carol Smith

Do you enjoy coming to Coffee Hour after the 10 a.m .service?
Please sign up to host a Sunday on the sign-up sheet in the kitchen.  There is no one signed up to host this Sunday, yet there is hope just yet that someone could roll in with treats and the capability of putting a pot on to brew.

Season of Civility
hosted by Margaret Irwin and Carol Smith
This summer, the Wisconsin Council of Churches and "36 regional and state-wide religious leaders have called upon the citizens of our state to enter a Season of Civility amidst the partisan rancor of the recent recall campaigns and the anticipated divisiveness of the fall election cycle." This fall, Deacon Carol Smith and The Rev. Margaret Irwin will be leading a discussion group around the book Healing the Heart of Democracy: The Courage to Create a Politics Worthy of the Human Spirit, by Parker Palmer. Come and learn how we as a parish and you as an individual can help make this a more civil season.  Offered on October 14th, 21st, and either Oct 28th or Nov. 4th. all during coffee hour in the library.

Here are some links to "study up" and prepare for what thew Season of Civility will try to teach...

Community of Hope - Growing in Christ

Here is an ideal opportunity to deepen your personal faith and discern your path for living out that faith in the world.  The Community of Hope program creates a Christian community of lay volunteer pastoral care givers who are shaped by Benedictine spirituality, united in prayer and equipped for and serving in pastoral care ministries.  Participants explore God's call in their lives through a training class where we practice a "rule of life" through silence, Christian meditation and learn about Pastoral care practices.  Study topics include: Theology of Pastoral Care, Prayer, Christian Meditation, Silence, Listening Skills and Confidentiality.  This national program started in Texas in 1994 and for the past several years has been taught at St Bartholomew's in Pewaukee.  The Madison team is pleased to offer this class at St Luke's in Madison starting September 15th of this year.

The third Madison-area Community of Hope class will be held on Saturdays, September 15th, October 20th, November 17th, December 15th, January 12th and February 16th.  We will gather at 9:00 am, cover one of our topics, have Morning Prayer at 11:00, break for lunch, have our reflection on the rule of Benedict and cover a second topic adjourning at 2:00 pm.  Applications are now available; there is a registration fee is $100.00.  For more information, conversation or an application please contact Carol Smith or Diane Brown.

I hope the end of the summer has been peaceful, and exciting as you get ready for the fall!  Because I have had a couple of questions, I wanted to remind you of the upcoming changes to Sunday school and the important dates for the fall.

September 16th: Sunday School Kick off!
  • Nursery opens at 9 a.m.
  • Godly Play (ages 4-7) begins at 9:10 a.m. (No family gathering time...we will have singing and music making later... see below).
  • Middle School "Re:Form" classroom (ages 8-13) begins 9:10 a.m.
  • 9:45am children serving as acolytes are excused.
  • 9:55am- Sunday school ends.  You may pick up your child and go into the service together, or your child can remain in the Godly Play room for "Children's Church" and will be dismissed during the Peace.  If we don't see you at 9:55, we will keep your child for children's church unless you specify it is ok for your child to come and find you (without the help of an adult).
  • 10:00 a.m. - Service begins and children's church begins.
  • Prayers of the people/Peace, children are dismissed from Children's church to join their parents/guardians in the main service.
NOTE:  I have very few volunteers to help me with the middle school program.  The feedback I have received is that we need/want the program, but the response to help has been low.  Very low.  So as of right now, I will make sure the program runs until at least mid-October.  If it does not seem to be sustainable at this point, the older children will re-join the younger kids in Godly Play.

October 7th: St. Francis Sunday... bring your pet, a picture, or a special stuffed animal to be blessed.  And... if you bring a pet please also consider bringing a 'doggie bag'.  Last year I had to get creative for some clean-up...

Email me with questions, comments, or concerns.

Looking forward to cooler weather...

Lauren
