Imagine it!  A Message from the Rector...

I've been rector of Grace Church for three years now. This past week I looked back over my blog entries from the first month of my ministry at Grace. It brought back memories of all the energy and excitement that characterizes any new venture and offered me the opportunity to reflect on the journey we've traveled together as a congregation over that time. I also read my sermons from that first month because we are reading the same set of lectionary texts this August. In one of those sermons, I talked about our building and physical plant as an opportunity for mission as well as a burden.

Maintaining a structure that is more than 150 years old requires enormous resources. Built by people with a vision of church and mission from previous centuries, it is not well suited for the needs and opportunities of the twenty-first century. We struggle with issues of accessibility and adaptability. At the same time, our presence on Madison's Capitol Square is an invaluable asset. As the oldest building on the square and the only church on the square, our visibility and landmark status witness to Madison and the wider community.

Over the past year a small group of people re-constituted the Aesthetics Committee. They began talking about ways of making our spaces more inviting to members and visitors. Initially they focused on the undercroft area, hoping to bring new life and beauty to classrooms and restrooms. After a few meetings discussing this one particular space and its use, they realized the task was much larger than a coat of paint and new carpet. They realized a more holistic look at the spaces of Grace and how those spaces correspond to the needs of our mission and ministry was needed. They began to talk with architects and tour other churches. Eventually, that Aesthetics Committee was transformed into the Master Plan Steering Committee and was charged by the Vestry of Grace Church to solicit proposals from architects for the development of a master plan to guide long-term renovation of Grace Church.

This summer, the expanded membership of the committee, the wardens and I read proposals, interviewed architects, toured churches from Milwaukee to Platteville, and spoke with clergy and lay people involved in renovation projects. We are now finalizing a contract with Kubala Washatko of Cedarburg, a firm with much experience working with both religious institutions as well as historic structures in urban environments.

On Sunday morning, August 19, after the 8:00 and 10:00 services, Grace parishioners will have the opportunity to learn more about this master plan process, how it has developed so far and what the process will look like. This will be an opportunity to ask questions of committee members. Most importantly perhaps, it will also be an opportunity to ask questions about the future of Grace Church, to explore who God is calling us as the Body of Christ to be in the next years, and how our physical space can help us proclaim the gospel, to love God and our neighbor.

Whether or not you are able to attend on Sunday, your input and participation in the process is vital. In the coming weeks, we will engage in conversation the entire Grace community-from long-time members to first-time visitors-and include outside groups that use our facilities. Together we will imagine what our community and our physical space will become in the next five or ten years. Together, we will discern what God is calling us to become as God's people on Madison's Capitol Square.

+ Jonathan

Contemplative Service
This evening at 6 p.m., St. Dunstan's is offering a contemplative Eucharistic service for those who feel they worship best in quiet.  The service will be simple, without a sermon, rather with periods of silence for the Spirit to speak to our hearts.  The focus will be stillness of mind, body and spirit.  If you would like to know more, contact Susan Fiore, AOJN, 845-2413.

Iron Man Ministry Fair
9/9 in the Guild Hall

It is time to starting pumping the iron and rounding up the brochures because the Iron Man Ministry Fair is almost here!

This annual event is scheduled for Sunday, September 9th, between the morning services and during coffee hour. And yes, we know it's Iron Man Sunday! We are making it our theme for this year!  Coffee hour snacks will include granola bars and bottled water, and everything you need to run/bike/swim your way around the Guild Hall.

Each participating group will have a table (or a portion of a larger table) where they may set up. The more eye-catching and informational you make your table, the more visitors you will likely have.

The ministries fair can accomplish different things depending on your group's interest:

  • To serve as a check in for all people in the parish to see what you have been up to recently (for example the Food Pantry would highlight that there is a new director).
  • To recruit new members or volunteers for your group. Bring a signup sheet!
  • To share future plans and events for this upcoming year. Bring handouts or pamphlets, posters, or other ways of sharing information.

If your group would like to participate please email me, Lauren G. Cochran, togracechurchformation@gmail.com, by September 3rd.  I will be coordinating the set-up and clean-up. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to be in contact with me.  The people of Grace Church do wonderful work and this is an excellent opportunity to share it with each other.

In peace,

Lauren

Next Book Group meeting gets political
The next Grace Book Group meeting will be at the Cooks, 7 PM, Thursday, September 6th.  We will be discussing Parker J. Palmer's Healing the Heart of Democracy:  The Courage to Create A Politics Worthy of the Human Spirit.  From the dust jacket:  "Democracy is a nonstop experiment in the strength and weakness of our political institutions, our local communities and associations and the human heart...The democratic experiment is endless, unless we blow up the lab, and the explosives to do the job are found within us.  But so also is the heart's alchemy that can turn suffering into community, conflict into the energy of creativity, and tension into an opening toward the common good."  (While there are library copies you may want to order it because of a large number of reservations.  You can easily read this short book in a short amount of time.)

In this endless season of negative political ads and politicians failing to deal with so many of the nation's problems, this is a timely book for us to read now because this Fall it will be the basis for a series of discussions at Grace on how "we as a parish and you as an individual can help make this a more civil season".  See the listing in the Christian Formation Course Catalog for a description of a "Season of Civility." Deacon Carol Smith -- one of our own! -- will be leading  discussions, starting in October, based on this book and the Book Group will thus be in a good position to participate.  These sessions will meet during the Coffee Hour on Sundays.  This entire catalog, prepared by Lauren Cochran, Grace's Christian Formation Director, contains a wealth of information on all the offerings this Fall.

Well, we're Anglicans but we are NOT "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" out in the noonday sun.  At our last meeting on July 25th, it was just too darn hot to meet on Ruth Sanderson's lovely patio so we met in Ruth's lovely apartment.  Ruth, as always, was a gracious hostess and it was a cozy, intimate meeting for about a dozen of us.  It was a good setting to talk about Edmund de Waal's The Hare With Amber Eyes.  We passed around and handled these "netsukes," lovely, tiny wooden carvings of people and animals he wrote about in his long odyssey to track down the ones that had belonged to his family.  Jane Henning and Linda Savage collected over the years several of these Japanese figures and they kindly brought them to show us.  I was also pleased that several new faces were there.  Everyone at Grace is most welcome at our meetings.

To entice you to come to the meeting on September 6th, we will start be showing a PBS "Rick Steves" travelogue (30 min.) on "Galicia and the Camino de Santiago."  This show traces the journey from the French border to Santiago de Compostela.  This show will allow us to see the Pilgrim Way we read about two meetings ago in William Schmidt's Walking with Stones.  This offering from an excellent public television series (on Charter Cable channel 973) also covers the "Running of the Bulls" at Pamplona [a larger collections of fools I hope never to meet] and the unique Celtic culture in Galicia.  Please join us.

Peace,
Frank Cook

Community of Hope - Growing in Christ

Here is an ideal opportunity to deepen your personal faith and discern your path for living out that faith in the world.  The Community of Hope program creates a Christian community of lay volunteer pastoral care givers who are shaped by Benedictine spirituality, united in prayer and equipped for and serving in pastoral care ministries.  Participants explore God's call in their lives through a training class where we practice a "rule of life" through silence, Christian meditation and learn about Pastoral care practices.  Study topics include: Theology of Pastoral Care, Prayer, Christian Meditation, Silence, Listening Skills and Confidentiality.  This national program started in Texas in 1994 and for the past several years has been taught at St Bartholomew's in Pewaukee.  The Madison team is pleased to offer this class at St Luke's in Madison starting September 15th of this year.

The third Madison-area Community of Hope class will be held on Saturdays, September 15th, October 20th, November 17th, December 15th, January 12th and February 16th.  We will gather at 9:00 am, cover one of our topics, have Morning Prayer at 11:00, break for lunch, have our reflection on the rule of Benedict and cover a second topic adjourning at 2:00 pm.  Applications are now available; there is a registration fee is $100.00.  For more information, conversation or an application please contact Carol Smith or Diane Brown.

Living Compass is a program that creates the opportunity for us to pause and check your bearings. "Life is a journey and like any journey, it is important at times to make sure you are intentional about the direction in which you are heading. First, you will check the direction in which you are headed in different aspects of your life. Then, you will ask yourself, 'Am I headed in the direction that I desire for myself?' You will also ask, 'Am I heading in the direction that God desires of me?'" Six more spaces are available for a Living Compass group at St. Luke's, Tuesday evenings, beginning September 11, 6:30-8 pm and continuing  for six sessions.  For more information, see http://www.livingcompass.org .  To sign up contact St. Luke's at 222-6921 or stlukesmadison@sbcglobal.net .  There is a minimal fee for the workbook.

Peanut Butter Call

The Grace Church Pantry is in need of peanut butter.  This simple staple requires no can opener, stove, refrigerator, or microwave to enjoy - making it a protein-packed food of choice for those in need in our midst, especially children. Live out Christ's call to serve - drop off a jar or two in the pantry or in the basket in the back of the Nave.
