We Pray for Rainimage
The Book of Common Prayer has just about everything a person might need for their day-to-day journey.  This week, Deacon Carol shares a timely prayer for rain found on page 828:

43.  For Rain
O God, heavenly Father, who by thy Son Jesus Christ hast promised to all those who seek thy kingdom and its righteousness all things necessary to sustain their life:  Send us showers, that we may receive the fruits of the earth, to our comfort and to thy honor: through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Explore The Hare with Amber Eyes on July 25

On Wednesday, July 25, the Grace Book Group will meet once again at the home of Grace parishioner, Ruth Sanderson.  This time the book of choice by author Edmund de Waal features a fascinating story about family, art, and tragedy.

From Amazon:

At the heart of Edmund de Waal's strange and graceful family memoir, The Hare with Amber Eyes, is a one-of-a-kind inherited collection of ornamental Japanese carvings known as netsuke. The netsuke are tiny and tactile--they sit in the palm of your hand--and de Waal is drawn to them as "small, tough explosions of exactitude." He's also drawn to the story behind them, and for years he put aside his own work as a world-renowned potter and curator to uncover the rich and tragic family history of which the carvings are one of the few concrete legacies. De Waal's family was the Ephrussis, wealthy Jewish grain traders who branched out from Russia across the capitals of Europe before seeing their empire destroyed by the Nazis. Beginning with his art connoisseur ancestor Charles (a model for Proust's Swann), who acquired the netsuke during the European rage for Japonisme, de Waal traces the collection from Japan to Europe--where they were saved from the brutal bureaucracy of the Nazi Anschluss in the pockets of a family servant--and back to Japan and Europe again. Throughout, he writes with a tough, funny, and elegant attention to detail and personality that does full justice to the exactitude of the little carvings that first roused his curiosity. --Tom Nissley

If anyone is interested in seeing ceramic works by Edmund de Waal or pictures of his netsukes including the hare with amber eyes, go to http://edmunddewaal.com. Whether you've finished the whole book by July 25th or haven't even begun, I hope you will consider joining us!  Carol has finished her book and can loan it out if anyone would like to skim it before the 25th.  Please contact me for a copy of the book or for directions to Ruth's.   - Frank Cook, 238-6974

Haiti Project Call for Artists

ESTATE SALES NET OVER $24,000
Grace ECW conducted two great estate sales in late spring and early summer, one in Maple Bluff and one in Tamarack Trails.  The bottom line results for the ECW was more than $24,000.

Thanks to all Grace volunteers who put in many hours to make these two sales successful.  Not only does each sale require over 200 man/women hours during the actual sale dates, but preparation and clean-up take an estimated an additional 1000 to 1200 hours.  While many of these hours are put in by our "regulars," many other Grace volunteers put in eight to sixteen hours for each sale, working when they can.  Volunteers usually work in teams, and new members can be paired with more experienced people during set-up and pricing.

No new sales are scheduled at this time, but fall inquiries are being invited.  As always, we try to find sales that will be interesting to our customers and profitable for our clients and for Grace.
