Breaking News

From St. Francis House UW

image

The Rt. Rev. Steven Miller, Bishop of the Diocese of Milwaukee, and the Board of St. Francis House are pleased to announce that The Rev. Jonathan Melton has accepted the call to be Chaplain of St. Francis House Episcopal Student Center on the UW-Madison campus. In late July he and his wife and their two young children will be moving to Madison from Texas.

Jonathan has been rector of St. Christopher's by the Sea, Portland, Texas, since October, 2009. He previously served as Assistant at St. Helena's Episcopal Church, Boerne, also in the Diocese of West Texas. Jonathan is a graduate of Wheaton College, BA (2003) and of the Duke University Divinity School, M. Div. (2007). He was ordained to the priesthood on September 18, 2007. Jonathan's interests include his family, hiking, reading, knitting, and blogging.

From Jonathan's blog, "Chasing Yoder": "I am very excited for the opportunity to work on a daily basis with university students at a uniquely formative time in their lives; I believe college ministry holds tremendous potential for the development of young, missional leaders committed to following the cross-shaped way of Jesus. My move to St Francis House comes in response to nudges of the Spirit toward campus ministry that Rebekah and I have been sensing in various ways for going on six years now. It's an exciting, unknown step for us."

The St. Francis House Board and staff are excited about working with Jonathan. St. Francis House will hold its fall semester kickoff on Sunday, September 9, at Grace Episcopal Church. We can hardly wait!

THE HARE WITH AMBER EYES (Reviewed on May 15, 2010, source unknown.)

A nimble history of one of the richest European families at the turn of the century.

De Waal, a notable London potter, is a descendent of the wealthy Ephrussi family. He seized on an inherited collection of Japanese netsukesmall decorative figures made out of wood or ivoryand traced its ownership down the family line, from patriarch Charles Ephrussi, originally from Odessa, to Great-Uncle Iggie, of Tokyo, who left the 264 elegant figures to the author upon his death in 1993. The family's fabulous wealth derived from the grain-trading business, operating between Paris and Vienna. Charles, who assembled the collection, was a dandyish art collector who settled in Paris at the age of 21, wrote art criticism and a book on Dürer and patronized the early Impressionists. He was quite possibly the real-life character on whom Proust modeled his Charles Swann. Subsequently, the netsuke was given to Charles's cousin Viktor on the occasion of his wedding in 1899just at the height of the Dreyfus Affair, when French anti-Semitism burst forth in full forceand the collection passed to Vienna, where the family resided at the surpassingly beautiful Ephrussi Palais on the Ringstrasse. Anti-Jewish feeling pervaded all facets of their lives, and two world wars wreaked havoc on the Ephrussi fortune. Eventually the netsuke was saved from the rapacious hands of the Nazis by a servant who stuffed it in her mattress. De Waal keeps a pleasantly ironic tone throughout this remarkable journey and nicely handles the clutter of objects and relatives.

The roster of characters is daunting at first, but this narrative proves a marvelously absorbing synthesis of art history, detective story and memoir.

Convention on its way!

Believe it or not, it's time to begin thinking about Diocesan Convention.

The 2012 Diocesan Convention takes place October 12-13, 2012, at the Madison Marriott West in Middleton, Wisconsin.

Parishes are asked to please forward this e-mail to their lay deputies and to members of the parish who may be interested in attending Convention as a visitor.  As in past years, there is NO CHARGE for visitors (non-deputies) who wish to attend the workshops and Eucharist on Friday.  All members of the diocese are welcomed and encouraged to take part in Convention! Registration is only necessary if visitors wish to attend the banquet Friday evening.  The same is true on Saturday - visitors only need to register to order meals.

Please keep in mind these important dates:

  • August 13 = deadline for submitting Nominations and Resolutions
  • October 7 = deadline for registering for convention (after this date only on-site registration is available)

Convention information and forms are also available on the diocesan website  www.diomil.org on the 2012 Diocesan Convention page.

Q:  Why do Episcopalians do the things they do?

A:  Relatively new to the Grace or in need of a brush-up?  Check out the latest additions to the rack of cards at the back of the Nave.  There you will find a new set of pamphlets outlining the faith traditions of the Episcopal Church - from the words we use to why it is customary to kneel immediately after entering the pew.
