As a dietitian with experience serving the nutritional needs of a variety of populations, we look forward to the skills she will bring to serving those in need who enter our doors. Once we've given her a bit of time to settle in, we'll feature a profile on her in This Week @ Grace so we can all have a nice introduction and a smiling face to go with her name.
Are you graduating? On June 3rd we will be honoring all graduates of Grace - from high school and beyond. If you will be graduating, or know someone who is, please send their name, photo, and accomplishments to: togracechurch@gmail.com.

This entails making coffee (provided) and/or bringing ice tea as well as lemonade and perhaps one finger food item to share. Minimal set up and clean up are involved. More detailed suggestions are available on the Summer Coffee Hour Guidelines sheet. The sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board next to the coffee pots. Just sign up; there is no longer a Coffee Hour coordinator. The Kitchen Committee is working on a plan for Coffee Hours in the Fall. Please contact the Rector if you have questions. The Grace of Space
| |
On Wednesday morning as I was entering the church, I encountered a young mother with an infant and toddler enjoying the last of the spring's tulips in our courtyard garden. She thanked me for the gift to the community of the garden's beauty and remarked with amazement that this place of beauty and serenity exists in the heart of the downtown.
The garden's beauty is obvious to all who pass by, but much of the rest of the beauty of our building is hidden behind locked and closed doors, or made inaccessible by steep stairways, poor lighting, and signage. Some years ago an Aesthetics Committee was organized to address some of these concerns. The redecorating of the chapel was one of its successful projects. After a period of quiet, that committee returned to its work last summer, focusing now on conditions in the dilapidated undercroft. Its members quickly realized there were issues that couldn't be resolved with new paint and carpet. The committee visited other churches that have undergone renovations and met with several architects. The committee proposed to the Buildings and Grounds Committee and to the Vestry and Wardens that the project take on a larger scope. Both groups have affirmed this larger mission.
In two recent sermons, I have shared a bit about this conversation that is now taking place. I thought it would be appropriate to continue this dialog and invite your participation. We are only at the very beginning, and we don't know what the outcome will be. From the outset, it is important to make clear that this process will involve everyone with a stake in Grace Church's facilities, including members and friends, the various entities and groups that make up parish activities, and the outside groups that use our space.
In the coming weeks and months, you will hear much more about this process. Your input and feedback at every stage will be an important shaping force. All throughout the process, we will be mindful of the financial realities, mindful as well of Grace as it exists today, and mindful of the legacy of those who have come before us and entrusted this beautiful church to us.
Now is the time, as we are living in a period of enormous cultural and religious change, to ask questions about how we might adapt our space to the future needs of our community, and how we might adapt our space to the changing religious needs of people in the twenty-first century. And above all, we must ask how our buildings can better help us share the good news of Jesus Christ on the Capitol Square.
+ Jonathan

More Excitement in the Air We have just about a week for laurel resting after April's probably best-ever estate sale. On Monday, May 7, we began pricing for another excellent estate sale to be held on Friday and Saturday, June 9 and 10. This is for another former Grace Church parishioner on the west side of town at 48 Oak Creek Trail. Sign up now to be a part of one Grace Church's most satisfying endeavors. Call or e-mail: Jane Henning (238-4089) or shennin2@wisc.edu.
Fill up the Food Pantry!
What better way to welcome the next food pantry coordinator than with a pantry stocked full of goodies?! As the interim coordinator, Lauren is collecting specific goods to help transition and welcome the newest staff member here at Grace. She needs your help to make this possible! Please donate what you can, but we are specifically looking for: peanut butter, tuna, household cleaning supplies, bar soap (unscented if possible), feminine hygiene products, pens, baby wipes, and Desitin. Just think about how many items on your grocery bill are NOT food... you cannot buy any of those things with food stamps or government aid... but we can hand them out at the pantry! Please bring your donations to the reception desk during the week, or the collection basket at the back of the nave on Sunday mornings. Thank you! - Lauren Volunteer in the Pantry Except for the 4th Saturdays, all summer weekends need crews. Know that few pantries are open Saturday, and very few welcome guests from all Dane County. Grace provides a crucial service to working families in need with this shift! Contact togracechurchpantry@gmail.com to serve. Called to Serve at St. Francis House The St. Francis House mission statement: Coming together in Christ. Claiming our ministries. Creating community. Keeping our hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God.
The St. Francis House Board considered several potential chaplain candidates in discerning who might best guide St. Francis House in living its mission. The Board has chosen to meet with two candidates. The St. Francis House community is invited to a "meet and greet" event for each of them. You may meet one of the candidates at Grace Church this Friday, May 11, at 5 p.m. You may meet the other candidate at Grace Church on Monday, May 14, at 5 p.m. The Board plans to call a chaplain to begin his ministry with St. Francis House this summer. Please pray for the Board and the candidates as they seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit. - Elizabeth Miller Wroblewski

Children will explore the use of water in Bible times as well as water issues around the world today. As they participate in lively worship, music, Bible memory and creative response activities, children will understand that God is the source of life. Just as God provided life-giving water in these stories, God continues to be the source of life and sustenance for us today. Mark your calendar for June 18-22, 9 a.m. - noon for Vacation Bible School! To make this a go, weneed a director or co-director, six other adults and several youth to volunteer during VBS. Help Stop the Scourge of Killer Baby Bunnies!
Beth Wroblewski snapped this shot as she was leaving the courtyard garden this past week. Only YOU can help take care of the Grace gardens and stop the terror of these dangerous little beasts. Please contact Mary Ann Germanson to become a member of the brave Grace Gardeners. Volunteer gardeners are needed today! Grace Presents - Navan Saturday, May 19, Noon
Navan, the visionary quartet of traditional Celtic singers, offers everything from shimmering Irish lullabies to spine-chilling Breton laments. When they were here in December, their performance was amazing. We are so very fortunate to be able to have them back at Grace again. Not to miss. Book Group to explore Walking with Stones on May 30 The next gathering of Grace Book Group will be at 7PM on Wed. 5/30. We will be discussing William S. Schmidt's Walking with Stones: A Spiritual Odyssey on the Pilgrimage to Santiago (Trafford Publishing, 2012, 217 pages, $12.20 from Amazon [probably hard to get at a library as it is so new]. Mary Ann just received a copy for a couple of you; if others want a copy from Amazon without paying postage, let Mary Ann know.)
Schmidt, Associate Professor of the Institute of Pastoral Studies at Loyola University in Chicago, undertook the 500 mile hike from southwest France to what medieval Europe thought was the end of the world: Finesterra, Spain after his marriage of several decades ended in divorce and he was undergoing a spiritual crisis. He is the author of two books, numerous articles in the fields of counseling and spirituality, and the editor of the Journal of Spirituality in Mental Health. Perhaps the Episcopal Bishop of New Jersey, The Rt. Rev. George E. Connell, said it best in his comments on the back cover: "Bill Schmidt's account of the Camino pilgrimage is both a confessional and a pulpit. The author is relentlessly honest in confession his brokenness. He is relentlessly hopeful and [in?] proclaiming his faith and God's unfailing grace. Above all this book is a witness to the author's work of the heart and an invitation to an authentic life." There is a possibility that the author may be able to come to our meeting.
This group is open to all old-timers and newcomers. Please contact me for directions to Elizabeth's: e-mail or 238-6974. - Frank Cook
