Called to Love Mother's Day is Sunday. For adult children with mothers still on this mortal coil, this is the day for those who live in close proximity to their mums to take them out for brunch while the rest of us spend hours at the card rack trying to find a card that perfectly describes the indescribable.
If the relationship between my own mother and me were made into a television show it would most certainly be a dry comedy. From day one we have been at odds as to how a life is best lived. My mother's idea of an ideal day is to spend hours hunting down shoes that match her necklaces that match her latest Coach purse. My idea of fun is to kayak down the Wisconsin River and have a picnic lunch on a sandbar. I know my mother would cringe at the idea of eating any meal sans the latest strappy sandals so close to the ground while I groan like the bears in those videos of people tranquilizing them to put on radio collars at the thought of spending the afternoon at the outlet mall.
And yet here we are, two people asked to spend a life sentence with one another.
After Googling "How to spend Mother's Day if you don't like your mother," I found out I'm far from alone out there. One blogger struggled to make peace with lavishing unfelt affection on her mother this one day out of the year, while ignoring the cloud of uncomfortable, unresolved issues hovering around them.

"I pity the fool that don't love their mother."
|
After spending a few moments watching a You Tube video of 1980s rapper, Mr. T, sing about respecting your mother, "because there is no other," I realized I probably won't find resolution on the interwebs. It's going to have to come from somewhere deep inside where there is no quick link to blogged answers.
Whether you're closer to the midpoint of your life or much further along, I suppose there is no better time to walk with God about whatever relationships are troubling you.
2 Timothy 1:5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your
mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well.
In our mothers we find a long line of God-given breath, extending back generations before us. The challenge of genuinely loving the unique character of those around us - whether our mother's, our neighbor's, or even the guy on the Capitol Square who yells "Recall Walker" every five minutes while I'm trying to work - is the truest test of our own ability to follow in the footsteps of the greatest example of love we've ever been given.
It's certainly not always easy. It's more likely complicated than simple, but it is the most noble and rewarding challenge we can ever accept.
Time to choose a card and start a long-awaited conversation.

Called to Serve
| Fill up the Food Pantry! What better way to welcome the next food pantry coordinator than with a pantry stocked full of goodies?! As the interim coordinator, I will be collecting specific goods to help transition and welcome the newest staff member here at Grace. I need your help to make this possible! Please donate what you can, but we are specifically looking for: peanut butter, tuna, household cleaning supplies, bar soap (unscented if possible), feminine hygiene products, pens, baby wipes, and Desitin. Just think about how many items on your grocery bill are not food. A family in need cannot buy any of those things with food stamps or government aid, but we can hand them out at the pantry! Please bring your donations to the reception desk during the week, or the collection basket at the back of the nave on Sunday mornings. Thank you!

Summer Coffee Hour
If you'd like to have Coffee Hour during the summer, please consider volunteering to host one Sunday. This entails making coffee (provided) and/or bringing ice tea as well as lemonade and perhaps one finger food item to share. Minimal set up and clean up are involved. More detailed suggestions are available on the Summer Coffee Hour Guidelines sheet. Copies are also available on the bulletin board next to the coffee pots. The sign-up sheet is there as well. Just sign up; there is no longer a Coffee Hour Coordinator. The Kitchen Committee is working on a plan for Coffee Hours in the Fall. Please contact the Rector if you have questions.
