Dear Members of Grace; I cannot tell you how wonderful it was to see you all this past Sunday! I know Cade and Phoebe were excited to be there as well. It feels extraordinarily good to be out and about and picking up with some semblance of normal! I wanted to take a moment and send out a very heartfelt THANK YOU! and give you my appreciation for your kindness, generosity, and ministering to my family during the time surrounding my surgery. To say that we were all under a little stress in my house would be an uderstatement! However, thanks to Darby, Carol Smith, the pastoral care committee, Fr. Jonathan and Corrie my Grace Family stepped up and made a huge contribution of their time and caring. Meals were prepared and dropped off. My children were picked up for the museum field trip and brought back home. Communion was brought to my house, cards and notes of love and get-well wishes came to my home by mail, taped to dishes of delicous food and filled my email. It was truly an experience of grace! Words cannot express my thanks enough to all of you. What a wonderful and uplifting show of Christ's love and fellowship! Again, thank you all for every prayer, cookie, casserole, and kind word...they really meant a lot to me and my family. In love and light, Elaina Seep Outer Loop Construction to begin March 20
On March 20, a major construction project will begin that will have a significant impact on Grace. The city is planning on a reconstruction of utilities, sewers, et al on Fairchild St. As they began planning for the project, they learned that the sanitary sewer on W. Washington Ave (in front of Grace) also needs reconstruction. N. Fairchild (from Mifflin to W. Washington Ave) will be closed from March 12 to April 20. S. Fairchild (from W. Wash to S. Hamilton will be closed from April 20 to June 29. In addition, W. Washington Ave. will be one lane of traffic inbound from Henry to Carroll from March 12 to April 20.
While access to our alley will be preserved throughout the process, the construction will disrupt parking, deliveries, and access. Sidewalks and crosswalks will be maintained for the duration of the project. Fortunately, the city has been responsive to our concerns and has provided excellent communications with all of those affected. Remember that we offer parking vouchers for the Overture Center ramp.
If you have any questions about this, please contact me or a staff member.

Grace Groups
| Grace Presents Spring Concert Series
Opens with Soprano Rachel Holmes
Rachel Holmes will be performing a solo vocal recital at Grace on Saturday, March 3rd at 12:00 p.m. Frequent soloist during Sunday services, Rachel will be performing a beautiful and lively program of Mozart arias and other works, accompanied by parishioner Steve Smith on piano. Don't miss this kickoff to the Grace Presents spring series! As always, the concerts are free and informal, and we look forward to seeing you there.
- Laura Weiner, Program CoordinatorThe Grace Presents Spring Series has been picked up by the National Google Alert for Classical Music via a blog post in The Well-Tempered Ear. (Please note, since posting, the date for the last concert in the series has been changed to May 19.) A Short Book offers an In-depth View
at the Next Grace Church Book Group
Next Meeting of the Grace Church Book Group will be at Zoe and Stan's home on Wednesday, April 18th, at 7 p.m. We will discuss William Trevor's Fools of Fortune. The Penguin Books blurb states: "In this award-winning novel, an informer's body is found on the estate of a wealthy Irish family shortly after the First World War, and an appalling cycle of revenge is set in motion. Led by a zealous sergeant, the Black and Tans set fire to the family home, and only young Willie and his mother escape alive. Fatherless, Willie grows into manhood while his alcoholic mother's bitter resentment festers. And though he finds love, Willie is unable to leave the terrible injuries of the past behind."
I have to say that I find the above inadequate: it doesn't touch on the tangles and tragedies between the Irish revolutionaries and a pro-Irish Anglo-Protestant family. Maybe this short book is all one needs to meditate on the Irish "Troubles" of the 20th century.
The Cooks "hosted" the last meeting because Elizabeth Steinhoff was laid up. Carol Smith brought all the wonderful goodies, however. We had a very spirited discussion of Take This Bread. For those of you unable to attend or those who have not read this moving and inspiring book, I urge you to do so. Sara Miles is a force of nature and, yes, she had access to resources not available to us, but I am jealous of her deep faith in the Lord and what she has done in the world.
Join us on April 18th. I guarantee you'll never regret making time to read Fools of Fortune. If you need directions or a ride, please don't hesitate to e-mail: - Frank |

 Ayni Education International Founder
Julia Bolz Receives World Citizen Award Ayni Education International founder Julia Bolz received the Seattle World Affairs Council's 2011 World Citizen Award in Seattle during an evening devoted to, "Waging Peace, Fighting Disease, Building Hope." On January 31, 2012, Julia shared the stage with President Jimmy Carter as she was recognized for her global citizenship and work educating the children of Afghanistan and communities in the United States. "Julia's efforts have helped people of Afghanistan's war-torn country to gain a sense of empowerment, stability and hope for the future. Her work to build broad and deep connections between residents of Washington State and Afghanistan and other (American) communities is equally noteworthy. Julia has spoken hundreds of times across the country to shine the light on the importance and challenges of educating girls in the developing country." Julia received a standing ovation for her acceptance speech highlighting the contributions of development workers in the field while paying tribute to the children and women she has so profoundly helped throughout her ten years building schools and educating girls and boys in Afghanistan. Several of Ayni's long-time supporters came from across the country to recognize Julia on this great evening. The Ayni Board of Directors and staff join together in celebrating Julia's award and commitment to peace and education. _________________________________________________ Congratulations, Julia, for being an inspiration to so many people. Trip to Madison Children's Museum all that & a big hamster wheel
| |

Proverbs 22:6
Train up a child in the way he should go;
even when he is old he will not depart from it.
On a bright sunny Sunday afternoon, 15 children from Grace's congregation reminded me how fun it is to be a kid - and how stressful it is to be in charge of 15 children in a museum full of hundreds of other children.
Let me first say that our trip to Madison's Children's Museum was a blast and all parties involved (children, chaperones, and parents who had the afternoon 'off') had a great time and would love to do it again. If you haven't been to the museum yet, you should go. (And yes, they have special nights just for adults!) The displays are all hands-on and there is something that every child (or adult) would love to explore.
Secondly, let me say that if all the children in the museum behaved as the Grace children behaved, it would have been a much more pleasant experience. Yes the museum is a place for running and yelling and exploring, but as one of our wise chaperones said, "If you don't believe in original sin, then you haven't been to the Children's Museum". The phrases "THAT'S MINE," "STOP PUSHING," and last but not least, "OW" echoed through my ears for several hours after our exit.
But not from the Grace kids. Our kids followed instructions, helped each other paint and build, led each other down the ladders when the scary slide at the top seemed like a bad idea, and observed the museum exhibits with an awe that only a child's eyes can show. In short, they were generally wonderful.
This field trip was a great chance for me as a parent to see how important it is to "train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it." And even more than that-this trip showed me again how other people in the church help raise my child in the community of God.
The love and care and energy that our chaperones extended to the kids was inspiring. Carol Smith decided to spend her 70th birthday by crawling and playing on the floor of the museum. On the way to the museum, after being asked "do you have kids?," Greg Taylor answered, "Nope, but you know that doesn't mean that I don't like kids. I love kids!" All of our chaperones were showing the kids of Grace what examples of Christ's love looks like, they were models of "the way we should go."
On a typical Sunday, I get to see the children of Grace learning about a particular Bible story, which is great. But this trip allowed me to see the lessons learned turning into actions and attitudes in the "real world" for them. Now I can say confidently that kids at Grace are learning and enacting behaviors of God's love from our Sunday school lessons, from their parents and guardians, and from how they see other adults behave at Grace.
I hope that all our future expeditions and every Sunday morning create an equally open space for all children to learn and act, and for all adults to show and model. Our call from scripture is clear, we are to raise our children in the way they should go, so that by our efforts combined "All [our] children shall be taught by the LORD, and great shall be the peace of [our] children." Isaiah 54:13.

An Invite to a Collaborative Lecture Recital
What: Carol Carlson's DMA Lecture Recital, featuring works by living composers Brad Fowler and UW-Madison alumnus Dr. Warren Gooch. Reception to follow.
Who: Carol Carlson, DMA candidate in violin performance; Amanda Horn, DMA candidate in piano performance and pedagogy; Liz Cassarino and Kristin Hammargren, MFA candidates in acting; Janelle Bentley, Henry Holmes, Tess Kuether, Shelby Sonnenberg and Petra Weith, BFA candidates in dance
Where: Morphy Recital Hall, Mosse Humanities Building, UW-Madison Campus When: Sunday, March 4, 6:30 p.m.
Topic: Interdisciplinary Collaborative Performance
In this recital, dancers have set their own original choreography to compositions written for the musicians. The Gooch piece, Concert Suite for a Midsummer Night's Dream, is for violin and piano, and features four dancers. Drawing on the centuries-old Midsummer tradition that crosses through all the arts disciplines, the five short movements will be interspersed with selections from the Shakespeare play, chosen and performed by the actors. The Fowler piece, Angels and Demons, is for solo violin and has been set for solo dancer. This piece will be complemented by selections from theatre and poetry, including Rilke's Second Duino Elegy and Goethe's Faust.
The lecture will address the merits and challenges of interdisciplinary collaboration, and will discuss the process of putting together this recital as a practical example of how to create such performances.
The performance is free and open to the public. I hope to see you all there!
