Fabulous Formation
| New Adult Forum Series Kicks off this Sunday
In the shoes of... This spring's Adult Forum series is called "In the Shoes of...". This is a chance for us to explore the radically different lives of people that are around us every day, some of which we notice and some we don't! Each forum will be a 2 part series: the first part will introduce a topic and the second will be the follow up. A follow up to what you ask? With each topic, we will challenge you to try life this way during the week! The follow up session will be a discussion of how hard or easy it was, did it change the way you thought about food or the environment? How long did your change of lifestyle last? One day? All week? One morning? Come to the Adult Forums following 10 a.m worship to listen and talk, learn and grow, even if you choose not to 'experiment' with your lifestyle during the week. FIRST SESSION February 5: In the shoes of... The Food Stamp Challenge. Could you live on $30 for all your food costs for one week? Come learn about how 1 in 8 people in Wisconsin budget their meals for the week, and perhaps take the challenge yourself. For more information click here (http://foodstampchallenge.typepad.com/) or here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UaIyrytH8tc). Most importantly, come to the forums after the 10am service! Part one on February 5th, and Part two on February 12th. If you can't attend the first week, don't let that stop you from coming to the second week! | | Food Stamp Challenge | Forums in this Series: February 5 +12: In the Shoes of... The Food Stamp Challenge February 19: (No Forum) February 26+ March 4: In the Shoes of... An Episcopal Monastic March 11 + 18: In the Shoes of... Our High School Students March 25: In the Shoes of... The Episcopal Church will hold its triennial General Convention in Indianapolis this July. One of the resolutions before convention will request a three year trial period for the use of blessings for same sex unions. Issues of human sexuality and the church's response to our LGBT members will be in the news this summer. Gay Straight Episcopalians, a group made up of clergy and laity from all four Madison churches, would like to offer you an opportunity to prepare for the conversations and questions that are bound to happen "around the water cooler" when you co workers and friends find out you are an Episcopalian.
Join us on Sunday February 12th at St Dunstan's or on Wednesday February 15th at St Luke's for a showing of the award winning documentary "For the Bible Tells Me So." Both showings are at 7 p.m. No RSVP is necessary.
A Trip to the Children's Museum! Calling all parents and guardians: Need a Sunday afternoon off? Want to grab some brunch with friends kid free? We've got you covered! ECW Connection
| Dear Friends and Families of Grace,
We are starting our new year with renewed dedication and activity. The first item to report is the exciting additions to our Grace Church ECW Board. Jane Ferris. Gwen JeSchonek, Ginny Shannon, and Mary Ray Worley have all joined the executive board and will work with former and continuing members Amanda Farrow, Jane Henning, Pat Werk, and Linda Savage to bring vibrant and relevant programming to our church life. Welcome to these special women. Many other Grace women responded positively to the call for an ECW Advisory Council formation which met in December 2011. The latter group will meet twice a year and continue to have an open membership policy. May God guide our work.
On Friday, January 13th, members of ECW prepared and served a light supper to the Haiti Steering Committee which was meeting at our church. The special guest was Pere Wisnel Desjardin, the new priest at St Marcs Church in Jeannette,Haiti. Much good fellowship was exchanged at that event.
The ECW Board recently approved a request from Grace Finance to cover a $200 shortfall from the 2011 Christmas decoration program. Some of this expense was carried over from the Easter decoration of Grace of last spring While many generous members of the congregation were willing contributors to our two major holiday decorations, the fact remains that we were not able to cover our needs, even with a sizable contribution from our hispanic ministry. We will be prayerfully brainstorming ways of addressing this situation in 2012.
Scheduled for February 11, 2012 is our 6th annual Woman's Luncheon in the Grace Guild Hall. A delicious gourmet menu will again be prepared by our own renowned chef, Wolfgang Werk. Parish men will assist in setup, serving, and cleanup. This fun event is greatly anticipated and appreciated by the female members of Grace who comprise our parish ECW. Mark your calendars for this free Saturday event. A record participation is hoped for. Our speaker, Judy Reed, will present an interesting program on the Liberian Assistance Program (LAP) which she and other members of the Madison community founded in 2007 after a trip to the African country of Liberia. LAP is a new recipient of ECW outreach funding this year. Please plan to attend.
We are looking forward to spending some quality time with women of Grace.

 Book Group to Meet 2/15
Our next meeting is at 7 p.m. at Elizabeth's. We'll be discussing Take This Bread - A Radical Conversion by Sara Miles. You don't have to have read the book to attend the discussion. Contact Frank Cook for directions. Review: "One early, cloudy morning when I was forty-six, I walked into a church, ate a piece of bread, took a sip of wine. A routine Sunday activity for tens of millions of Americans except until that moment I'd led a thoroughly secular life, at best indifferent to religion, more often appalled by its fundamentalist crusades. This was my first communion. It changed everything." So writes Sara Miles in the opening paragraph of her spiritual memoir. This unusual book by an atheist who turned Christian offers a colorful and oftentimes compelling account of radical faith in the city of San Francisco where one can dine in some fancy restaurants or rub shoulders with street people who are hungry every day. Miles converts thanks to the liturgy and emphasis on the Eucharist at St. Gregory of Nyssa Episcopal Church. She is attracted to Jesus, who eats with everyone and refuses to turn anyone away from God's abundance. The author grew up in family where religion was shunned. She traveled the world as a left-wing journalist and, as a lover of food, she also was restaurant cook in various places. By the time Miles reaches the turning point in her life, she is ready, willing, and able to find a new way to feed others, to incarnate the radical love of Jesus for the poor and the dispossessed. She starts St. Gregory's Food Pantry and is soon feeding thousands of people a week. Miles puts her body, mind, and soul into this service and then receives a huge financial gift. She starts many more pantries with it. "Supper with God" is what animates her life. She writes: "The entire contradictory package of Christianity was present in the Eucharist. A sign of unconditional acceptance and forgiveness, it was doled out and rationed to insiders; a sign of unity, it divided people; a sign of the most common and ordinary human reality, it was rarified and theorized nearly to death. And yet that meal remained, through all the centuries, more powerful than any attempts to manage it. It reconciled, if only for a minute, all of God's creation, revealing that, without exception, we were members of one body, God's body, in endless diversity. The feast showed us how to re-member what has been dis-membered by human attempts to separate and divide, judge and cast out, select or punish. At that Table, sharing food, we were brought into the ongoing work of making creation whole." The holy work of making creation whole is no picnic, and Miles shares one story after another about selfish Christians, city bureaucrats, the concept of "faith-based charity," the sadness of seeing so many hungry children, and the challenges faced by homeless people in San Francisco. The journey of faith recounted on these pages is inspirational, a sign of what a zealous woman and a church community driven to service can accomplish in the name of the One who called us to feed others.

Holy Week will fast be approaching, offering additional service opportunities. Thank you for setting aside time to serve. February ROTA

An Invitation to Mindfulness You are invited to come to a Public Presentation given by Flint Sparks, PhD Psychologist and Zen Buddhist Priest Siddhartha Gautama Mindfulness and the Many Aspects of Self: A Way through Suffering to Freedom March 7th 7 - 9:00 pm Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church 1833 Regent Street Madison, WI Siddhartha Gautama was interested in one fundamental question: How can we truly understand human suffering and how can we help end suffering for all beings? After an extensive search and dedication to finding the answer, he came to a shattering insight that led to the Enlightened State - becoming the Buddha. He invited his followers to engage in meditation practices to demonstrate through their own experience that liberation of the human heart and mind is possible. What if the Buddha had used the language of modern mindfulness-based practices? How would his teachings have sounded? Please join us in sharing the resonance of these transformative teachings for all people regardless of religion, race, or culture and the profound possibility inherent in them.
