This Week at Grace
January 30 - February 5
Immanuel Image

In the fall of 1997 I moved from St. Louis, Missouri, to Darlington, Wisconsin, a small, rural town in the south-western corner of a state I knew nothing about.  I was still adjusting to the culture shock of a place so Lake Wobegon it made Lake Wobegon look like urban Chicago when a call came in from the close-knit congregation of cheese-makers and farmers at Immanuel United Church of Christ I had recently become a member of.  It went something like this:

*ring**ring*

Voice on the other end (thick Wisconsin accent with hint of Swiss-German lineage):  Hi, Jody.  Dis is Rosie Badetscher from church.  I just wanted ya ta know, you are signed up ta bring da pickles and serve at da February Women's Guild meeting.

J:  (Totally confused.)  I am?  But I didn't sign up for anything.  I'm not a member of the Guild.

R:  All women are members of da Guild.  We'll see you on Wednesday, at noon, wit pickles.

Now, I don't exactly classify myself as a feminist, but when I hung up that phone I was pretty fired up.  The nerve of those women to assume just because I'm also a woman, through no choice of my own mind you, that I'd want to be part of the Women's Guild.  And pickles?  At noon on a weekday?

Needless to say, I went, at noon, with pickles.  Those tough farm gals don't mess around.  I thought it best not to push the limits of their friendliness too early in the game with the nearest metropolitan refuge being over an hour away.  I opted for a nice blend-in-with-the-crowd seasonal pin instead of my blue and white "Women make Policy, not Coffee" button purchased on my first visit to State Street.

The truth of the matter; however, shortly revealed itself.  These women not only make coffee, and funky casseroles, and amazing desserts I still wake up craving all these years later - they make coffee AND policy.  The Women's Guild of Immanuel United Church of Christ like women's groups in churches across the country are where you'll find the best examples of ultra-sharp human beings who are 100% comfortable letting their brawn match their brains, match their extreme dedication to the call of Christ, all while wearing the laciest-adorned sweatshirts you've ever seen.

These meetings opened my eyes to the strength of my fellow female companions and to their friendship; which in coming years and the ups and downs in all our lives, proved invaluable and immensely worth a couple jars of pickles and the washing of a few hundred plastic lunch trays.

If you happen to find yourself a woman please consider taking two hours to attend the ECW Annual Luncheon at Grace this upcoming February 11 from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.  And if you find yourself a man, please consider helping prepare and serve the meal.  Childcare and ride-sharing can be arranged.  RSVPs are due by today, but I'm sure if you are reading this somewhere close to the 30th and give a quick call or e-mail room will be made.

It is certain to be a wonderful opportunity to learn about the work of the women at Grace and listen to guest speaker, Judy Reed, co-founder of the Liberian Assistance Program.  It is certain to be a time of community-building in a world that needs all the community it can get.

Seasonal pin not required.  I can make no claims about pickles.

Jody
