Coffee Hour Hosts set up before the 10 a.m. service and clean-up afterward. Hosting takes a couple or three people and not much time. Guidelines provided. Great way to get to know others or contribute as a family or group. Hosts do not need to provide food, although anyone is welcome to contribute food. Donations to offset food costs are always appreciated as well. Please contact Corrie if you'd like to host, contribute food, or have questions. Grace Abounds - a note from Elaina Seep
(This note was sent before her surgery.)

Dear Church Family,

Thank you all so much for your generousity and the ministry you are willing to bring to me and one another.  Sometimes, God is as simple as a loaf of bread...or a great casserole made with love!  I cannot tell you how nice it was this evening to be able to just heat up a dish and get to eat with my family...no fuss...no running around trying to do a million things...on the night before surgery!  Truly a gift and definitely grace.

For those of you that might be interested, my sister and I created a patient webpage to update everyone on my progress tomorrow and the days there after.  It is :

I am the first surgery of the day tomorrow...I check in at 6:30am, start prep (I can't wait to sport that new hairdo!) at 7:30 and then the surgery will really start at 9am.  The surgery should be complete around 1pm and then I will spend 24-48 hours in ICU.

Again, thank you all for your kindness.  We truly appreciate it and I am feeling quite lucky to be part of the Grace Church family.

In love and peace,

Elaina Seep

Update on Elaina Seep
Elaina underwent brain surgery on Tuesday, January 17th.  She was
overwhelmed by the outpouring of love from the people of Grace in
prayers, in well-wishes, in food.  The update as of the end of the day
Tuesday was that the surgery went well and that once the surgeon had
gotten through her skull and moved on to the duraplasty, he found a
significant amount of webbing which he thought was to blame for the
pressure issues and which was certainly obstructing the flow of spinal
fluid through the cervical spine. By the evening on Tuesday, she was
fully coherent, already feeling positive effects from the surgery, and
able to hold down liquids.  Praise God!

- Darby Puglielli

**If you are interested in providing a meal for the Seeps in this time of need, please contact Darby, Chair of Pastoral Care, for details on food preferences, etc.

Grace welcomed Pere Wisnel Dejardin
with warm wishes and a hearty meal

The Diocese of Haiti Steering Committee met with Pere Wisnel Dejardin on Friday, Jan. 13th at 4 p.m. at Grace Church. Pere Wisnel, who has been the new Rector at St. Marc's, Jeannette, Haiti since August was able to give us much information about the situation in Jeannette.

The two major concerns are water and food. Since Oct. through the present in what is normally the rainy season, there has been drought and
cisterns, the only source of water in this arid, mountainous place are nearly empty. A school lunch meal provided through Catholic Relief Services has mysteriously disappeared. We were able to come up with short term solutions to both issues that will be implemented immediately. Long term solutions are being investigated.

At 5:30, the Grace ECW, represented by Linda Savage, Amanda Farrow,
and Ginny Shannon provided a wonderful meal, personally served and
capped with a scrumptious cake, honoring Pere Wisnel.  Grace members in attendance included Steve and Carol Smith, Susan Webster, and Sparky Watts.

On behalf of Pere Wisnel Dejardin and the Steering Committee of the Haiti Project, we extend deep thanks for this warm hospitality.

MUM Annual Fundraiser
Save the date!  Madison-area Urban Ministry is having their once-a-year fundraiser on Thursday, March 1st from 5-8 p.m. at Madison Christian Community (7118 Old Sauk Rd).  There will be appetizers and live music, as well as poetry and some storytelling, all in the gorgeous Blessings Room.  No chicken and no long speeches. Tickets are $35.  As we are in the planning stages now, we are looking for people to either sponsor the event (give additional money up front), donate to the silent auction, or offer to volunteer to assist the night of the event.  MUM is the non-profit in town doing important work with people who are in prison, newly released from prison, or have family members who are in prison.  MUM also sponsored the longest-night vigil at Grace to bring awareness to homelessness in Madison.  For more information, or to help out, contact MUM's Board of Directors President, Linda Newman or Darby Puglielli.

● Madison-area Urban Ministry has been a leader in social justice in
Madison for the past 40 years.

● Madison-area Urban Ministry has worked with other groups to
address the needs of the community. We have incubated several
non-profits including (but not limited to); Family Enhancement;
Porchlight; Project Home; Elder Care of Dane County; the Coalition
of Older Adults.

● Madison-area Urban Ministry has several programs to assist men
and women who have experienced an incarceration, providing the
tools necessary for them to succeed at a second chance to contribute to
the community.

● Madison-area Urban Ministry supports children with an
incarcerated parent by providing them with a mentor- thus offering
them a second chance at a healthy childhood.

Serve up a big helping of love on February 6
The next First Monday Meal is Feb. 6.  Many thanks to the Mennonite Congregation and our own volunteers (some with visiting family members along) who gave up watching the Rose Bowl to serve at the Jan 2 First Monday Meal. The generous musicians of  Fungus Humongous once again provided the music. The next meal is February 6. Please contact Mary Ann Germanson if you can help. Volunteers should arrive by 7:15.

It's for you!
Mary Ann Cook has dutifully served as a volunteer in the downstairs reception office, known humorously as the "Fish Bowl," for many Wednesdays.  Now, the time has come for her to focus on her new role as Senior Warden, leaving the opportunity for someone new to fill her spot.

Volunteering in the Fish Bowl is a wonderful way to be an active part of the ministry of Jesus Christ through Grace.  If you are available to serve Wednesday mornings from 9 until noon, please contact Jody in the church office to learn more.  Short-term or long-term commitments are welcomed.

Hosts are Needed
The International Student Exchange Program is looking for hosts in the Madison area willing to open their homes to foreign exchange students.  Single parents, as well as couples, with or without children may host.  Contact Gertrude Waigumbulizi, Grace member and ASSE Area Representative, to learn more about this life-changing opportunity to share your home for a year and enjoy a friendship for a lifetime.

Hello Parents!

Looking for a couple of hours to yourself? Well you are in luck!  We here at Grace would like to treat the kids to lunch and a trip to the Children's Museum.  We thought we'd ask you if you prefer a Saturday morning (9 a.m. - 1 p.m.) or a Sunday afternoon (after the 10 a.m. service we'd eat lunch and go to the museum, with pick up at church at 3 p.m.).

In particular, which would you prefer...

Saturday Feb. 4th
Sunday Feb. 5th
Saturday Feb. 18th
Sunday Feb. 19th

Email me and let me know.... and sadly, of course, the truth is that no one date will work for everyone, so we will pick based on the majority.

Once a date is set, I will send out particular details and instructions. We'll have plenty of chaperones to make the trip fun and give you the time off - but if you really want to come to the museum too, contact me to ask about chaperoning.

Thank you for your input and for being a wonderful parent!!

In peace,

Lauren

Are you missing a winter hat?
A winter hat was left in the children's music room this past Sunday.
If you'd like to claim it, please see Colin Oakes who has it safely stored.

Gay Straight Episcopalians,
Having the Conversation in Madison, Wisconsin

The Episcopal Church will hold its triennial General Convention in Indianapolis
this July. One of the resolutions before convention will request a three year trial
period for the use of blessings for same sex unions. Issues of human sexuality and
the church's response to our LGBT members will be in the news this summer. Gay
Straight Episcopalians, a group made up of clergy and laity from all four Madison
churches, would like to offer you an opportunity to prepare for the conversations
and questions that are bound to happen "around the water cooler" when you co
workers and friends find out you are an Episcopalian.

Join us on Sunday February 12th at St Dunstan's or on Wednesday February 15th at
St Luke's for a showing of the award winning documentary "For the Bible Tells Me
So." Both showings are at 7 p.m. No RSVP is necessary.

From Amazon's Product Description:
Winner of the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Seattle International Film Festival, Dan Karslake's provocative, entertaining documentary brilliantly reconciles homosexuality and Biblical scripture, and in the process reveals that Church-sanctioned anti-gay bias is based solely upon a significant (and often malicious) misinterpretation of the Bible. As the film notes, most Christians live their lives today without feeling obliged to kill anyone who works on the Sabbath or eats shrimp.

Through the experience of five very normal, very Christian, very American families - including those of former House Majority Leader Richard Gephardt and Episcopalian Bishop Gene Robinson - we discover how insightful people of faith handle the realization of having a gay child. With commentary by such respected voices as Bishop Desmond Tutu, Harvard's Peter Gomes, Orthodox Rabbi Steve Greenberg and Reverend Jimmy Creech, For The Bible Tells Me So offers healing, clarity and understanding to anyone caught in the crosshairs of scripture and sexual identity.
Stewardship Update
Tomorrow, the newly elected vestry and wardens will attend a retreat to reflect on the Grace Church community and the contribution that the vestry might make to enhancing our common life  in the coming year.  We have much to be grateful for as we begin that venture - most especially the generosity and gifts of this congregation. Your generous response to the pledge campaign provides the basis upon which planning and budgeting are built.  All of our ministries are rooted in your gifts and your willingness to share them through the First Mondays, food pantry,  altar guild, Christian formation, the pastoral care team., fishbowl, and more.

We continue to welcome your pledges, your ideas, and your participation  in ministry.  Opportunities for stewardship  in many forms will continue throughout the year and not just in the fall pledge campaign.

Any member of the vestry will be pleased to hear your concerns and try to find answers when needed.  Please call on me at any time.
